  • Poster: Creating a user-specific Perspective View for mobile mixed reality systems on smartphones
    2013 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI), 2013
Co-Authors: Yuki Matsuda, Fumihisa Shibata, Asako Kimura, Hideyuki Tamura
    Abstract:

We propose a method for creating a user-specific Perspective View for mobile mixed reality (MR) systems that provides three-dimensional perception based on pseudo motion parallax. In general, most common mainstream interface for a hand-held AR/MR system is video-see-through style with a device-Perspective View. On the other hand, our method provides a user-Perspective View, which displays MR images according to the user's Viewpoint and the position of the display. Namely, our method trims a scene behind the display and superimposes CG images in consideration of the user's point of View. This enables the user to perceive a stereoscopic effect with a non-3D display based on pseudo motion parallax. We implemented a prototype and tested our proposed method on smartphones.

  • Using pano-mapping tables for unwarping of omni-images into panoramic and Perspective-View images
    IET Image Processing, 2007
    Co-Authors: S.w. Jeng, W.h. Tsai
    Abstract:

A unified approach to unwarping of omni-images into panoramic or Perspective-View images is proposed. The approach does not adopt the conventional technique of calibrating the related parameters of an omni-camera. Instead, it is based on a new concept of a pano-mapping table, which is created once forever, by a simple learning process for an omni-camera of any kind, as a summary of the information conveyed by all the camera parameters. The learning process takes, as input, a set of landmark point pairs, in the world space and in a given image. With the help of the pano-mapping table, any panoramic or Perspective-View image can be created from an input omni-image taken by the omni-camera, according to an analytic computation process proposed in the paper. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • A Perspective View and Survey of Meta-Learning
    Artificial Intelligence Review, 2002
    Co-Authors: Ricardo Vilalta, Youssef Drissi
    Abstract:

Different researchers hold different Views of what the term meta-learning exactlymeans. The first part of this paper provides our own Perspective View in which the goal isto build self-adaptive learners (i.e. learning algorithms that improve their bias dynamicallythrough experience by accumulating meta-knowledge). The second part provides a survey ofmeta-learning as reported by the machine-learning literature. We find that, despite differentViews and research lines, a question remains constant: how can we exploit knowledge aboutlearning (i.e. meta-knowledge) to improve the performance of learning algorithms? Clearlythe answer to this question is key to the advancement of the field and continues being thesubject of intensive research.
