A dual-porosity model for evaluating Petroleum Resource potential in unconventional tight-shale plays with application to Utica Shale, Quebec (Canada)
Marine and Petroleum Geology, 2017Co-Authors: Zhuoheng Chen, Denis Lavoie, Michel Malo, Chunqing Jiang, Hamed Sanei, Omid H. ArdakaniAbstract:Unconventional tight to shale reservoirs vary from tight sandstone/siltstone to organic-rich mudstone/shale, commonly with mixed lithologies. In such reservoir systems, matrix pores and organic pores with different origins and distinct physical and chemical properties co-exist for hydrocarbon storage. Traditional Resource assessment methods, designed for conventional reservoirs, cannot handle the two pore systems properly. This study proposes a dual-porosity model to respond to the need for a new method in assessing hydrocarbon Resource potential in such reservoir systems. The dual-porosity model treats the two types of pores separately and derives the Resource estimates from different sources of data, thus better characterizing unconventional reservoirs with complicated pore systems. The new method also has the flexibility of assessing Resource potential for the entire spectrum of mixed lithologies ranging from a complete tight to a pure source rock (organic–rich shale/mudstone) reservoir. The proposed method is illustrated through the assessment of the in-place Petroleum Resource potential in the Upper Ordovician Utica Shale of southern Quebec, Canada. The results of the application suggest that the proposed approach effectively handles the two pore systems in tight-shale reservoirs effectively and provides a useful tool for estimating Resource potential in unconventional plays.

Petroleum Resource Potential of the Canada (Amerasian) Basin Rift Margin of the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin, Arctic Canada
2014Co-Authors: Zhuoheng Chen, James Dietrich, Kirk G. Osadetz, Yexin LiuAbstract:The southern onshore part of the Canada (Amerasian) Basin rift margin is a proven hydrocarbon province, with seven significant discoveries, pre dominantly gas in structural traps of Mesozoic-Cenozoic clastic and Paleozoic carbonate reservoirs. A comprehensive study of marine reflection seismic data, including seismic inversion and spectral decomposition, and geological modeling and statistic inference based on machine learning techniques, provides insights into possible oil and gas occurrences and a Petroleum system model for the offshore northern part of the rift margin. Combined with other geological constraints, our study suggests that the offshore rift margin becomes more oil-prone northward and may have significant Petroleum Resource potential. This paper illustrates the geological and geophysical evidence of potential Petroleum occurrences, Petroleum system model and oil and gas Resource estimates in the offshore rift margin.

Introduction to a Special Issue on Petroleum Resource Assessment Methods and Case Studies
Bulletin of Canadian Petroleum Geology, 2012Co-Authors: Zhuoheng Chen, Kirk G. Osadetz, Jim Davidson, Mike DawsonAbstract:This Special Issue of the Bulletin of Canadian Petroleum Geology contains thematic research articles based on presentations first made to the Third Resource Assessment Methodology Symposium, held September 15–17, 2010, in Canmore, Alberta. These ad hoc symposiums gather investigators to focus on Petroleum Resource assessment methods and case studies in conventional and unconventional reservoirs. The Canadian Gas Potential Committee (CGPC) initiated these symposiums beginning in Calgary, in 2000, with nine scientific articles published in a special issue of Natural Resource Research (Logan, 2005). The United States Geological Survey (USGS) hosted the second symposium in Denver, Colorado, in 2004, with emphasis on special problems associated with the appraisal of conventional Petroleum Resources. The 2010 symposium was the third of a similar theme. The Canadian Society for Unconventional Gas (CSUG), now the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources (CSUR), the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the National Energy Board (NEB) were co-organizers of this symposium. The meeting attracted sixty-six participants, including fifteen participants from outside North America. The delegates made twenty-three oral and seven poster presentations, the details of which will appear elsewhere (i.e. Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists website and Reservoir ). The focus and content of the three symposiums follow and illustrate a number of significant changes in the nature of the Petroleum Resource-base and the focus of industrial, policy, and regulatory assessment needs to both describe and infer Petroleum Resources. In the last decade, or so, Petroleum exploration and exploitation have made significant advances on two fronts. Advances in drilling and completion technologies have changed not only the supply-demand dynamics in global Petroleum markets, but also the Petroleum reservoir concept. Almost every rock type is now a potential reservoir. Petroleum is now produced commercially from fine-grained and organic-rich successions that were previously regarded as both top seals and source …

Using copulas for implementation of variable dependencies in Petroleum Resource assessment: Example from Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin, Canada
AAPG Bulletin, 2012Co-Authors: Zhuoheng Chen, Kirk G. Osadetz, James Dixon, James DietrichAbstract:Petroleum Resource potential modeling seeks to characterize undiscovered Petroleum Resources. This information from the modeling can contribute to a reduction in corporate risk while characterizing the commercial potential of the undiscovered Resources. Such models consider different types of variable dependencies arising from geologic risk evaluation, volumetric calculation, and Resource aggregation to higher geographic levels. Commonly, the available data are not sufficient to specify such variable correlations or interdependencies, particularly in frontier regions. It is also a challenge to formulate variable correlations in Resource calculations because geologic variables have to be fit to a multivariate lognormal distribution or other specific multivariate distributions with an appropriate correlation structure. However, variable correlations are common among the geologic variables, and ignoring the interdependencies may lead to a serious bias in the Resource potential estimation and the uncertainty range. Recent methodological developments in statistics indicate that the use of copulas permits more flexibility for the consideration and incorporation of variable interdependency, thus analogs can be introduced to problems where estimating correlation structures are impossible and wider choices of statistical distributions become available. This article proposes the use of copulas for handling variable dependency in Petroleum Resource assessment. The methods and procedures are illustrated using examples from a hypothetical data set and the crude oil Resource appraisal of Tertiary clastic plays in Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin in Arctic Canada. Comparisons of crude oil Resource estimates obtained using different correlation scenarios for these plays suggest that when positive correlations are used, the mean value of the oil Resource is increased about 1.6 times that estimated, assuming a complete independence among the input variables.

Phanerozoic Carbonate Reservoir Characteristics and Petroleum Resource Distribution in the World
Natural Gas Geoscience, 2012Co-Authors: Yang You-xingAbstract:Based on statistics and integrate analysis of data on carbonate basins in the world,we discuss characteristics of carbonate reservoirs, distribution of Petroleum Resources in different geologic periods in six regions of enriched oil and gas.High quality reservoirs in Middle East-European region,Central Asia-Russia-North America,Africa,South America,China-Asia Pacific region, and South Asia-Pacific region are distributed in Jurassic-Cretaceous,upper Paleozoic,Cretaceous-Cenozoic,Cretaceous,lower-Paleozoic,and Cenozoic, respectively.Three types of reservoir lithology are limestone, dolomite and chalk,in which limestone and dolomite are dominant. The older age the reservoir is,the larger proportion the dolomite is;but the younger age the reservoir is,the larger proportion the limestone is.Distribution of reservoirs is controlled by deposited facies. The particles beaches, tidal flat and lagoon are profitable to form the dolomite. The deposited facies for high quality reservoir formation is bioconstructed.Distribution of Petroleum Resources is controlled by carbonate space. Most of Petroleum Resource is distributed from Carboniferous to Tertiary, the oil is dominated in Cretaceous, the gas is Permian and Cretaceous.Additionally, the abundant Petroleum Resources are also disturbed in Carboniferous,Jurassic and Paleocene.

A discussion on Petroleum Resource concepts and assessment approaches
Oil and Gas Geology, 2011Co-Authors: Sinopec ExplorationAbstract:By analyzing different understandings of Petroleum Resources,we discuss the differences in connotations of the various concepts of Petroleum Resources and put forward two different Resource assessment approaches. One is hydrocarbon-generation-based approach which takes hydrocarbon generation units as basic appraisal units.Based on principles of hydrocarbon generation, migration and accumulation,it establishes geological models and mathematical models to calculate hydrocarbon generation amount and eventually total Resources. The other is hydrocarbon-accumulation-based approach which takes hydrocarbon accumulation units as basic appraisal units. On the basis of comprehensive analysis of Petroleum geology,it figures out the number and size distribution of oil/gas accumulations or cells and then calculates undiscovered Resources. We also discuss main factors that influence Resource assessment. At last, suggestions are made to improve Petroleum Resource assessment in China:1)to strengthen research on Resource assessment methods and complete Petroleum Resource assessment system;2)to complete classification criteria and system for oil/gas Resource in order to bring them in line with international standards;3)to set up a dynamic Resource assessment mechanism and to establish the national team, system and database for Petroleum assessment.
