    L'A. met en avant les implications de la philosophie du langage pour la recherche d'information, notamment en ce qui concerne les difficultes de la description des contenus intellectuels. Les echecs du processus de recherche d'information sur le plan linguistique se situent aux niveaux de la description et de la discrimination, et dans l'equilibre entre resultat (recall) et precision. L'A. rappelle l'impact des travaux de L. Wittgenstein sur la theorie du langage et plus particulierement sur le sens linguistique : les mots nomment des objets, chaque mot a un sens, le sens d'un mot est independent du contexte, le sens des phrases est constitue du sens des mots. La theorie externaliste des echaffaudages (scaffolding) devrait avoir un impact important sur la description et la classification en recherche d'information. La part de la philosophie du langage dans la litterature sur la recherche d'information demeure toutefois modeste.

    Abstract:

    This discussion takes the position that information retrieval systems are fundamentally linguistic in nature - in essence, the Languages of document representation and searching are dialects of natural Language. Because of this, the discipline of the Philosophy of Language should have some bearing on the problems of document representation and search query formulation. The philosophies of Austin, Searle, Grice and Wittgenstein are briefly examined and their relevance to information retrieval theory is discussed

    Abstract:

    Many topics in the Philosophy of Language pertain to pragmatics and there are many to which pragmatics pertains. Ones of the first sort, in Philosophy of PRAGMATICS, include performatives, speech acts, communication, conversational implicature, and the question of how to distinguish pragmatic from semantic matters. Topics of the second sort, in APPLIED PRAGMATICS, concern various terms, distinctions, and problems of philosophical interest. Our survey of them will illustrate how certain seemingly semantic problems can be resolved by enforcing a cogent semantic-pragmatic distinction, for in many cases apparent matters of meaning turn out to be matters of use.

  • The Buddhist Philosophy of Language in India: An Overview

    Abstract:

    The attitude of Indian Buddhist thinkers towards Language has varied in the course of history, depending on how they understood its nature, purpose, and efficiency particularly in the light of the key goal of the Buddhist practice: to achieve awakening (bodhi). Since the awakening is  сonsidered a direct, non-conceptual and non-verbal access to the highest reality per se‚ Language is attributed to a lower empirical reality the ordinary human beings live in. This explains the fundamentally nominalist position of the Buddhist thinkers regarding Language. Unlike some other Indian thinkers who believed in the intimate relation between words, things, and universals, in Buddhism Language is understood as the articulation and conceptual construction of empirical reality on the basis of linguistic conventions. The paper will examine some stages of the Buddhist Philosophy of Language as it was taught by the Buddha, through the theories concerning the nature of Language and the problems of semantics in the Indian schools of Buddhism such as Abhidharma, Madhyamaka, and Yogācāra.
