lignin is the main determinant of total dietary fiber differences between date fruit Phoenix Dactylifera l varieties
NFS Journal, 2020Co-Authors: Navomy George, Annica A M Andersson, Roger Andersson, Afaf KamaleldinAbstract:Abstract Date fruits (Phoenix Dactylifera) of ten varieties, collected in the United Arab Emirates, were studied to determine their dietary fiber content and composition. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that the dietary fiber components in all the date fruit varieties was similar. The major dietary fiber components, including cellulose, hemicellulosic components, lignin, and pectin, were analyzed by the Uppsala method. The total dietary fiber content in the date fruits analyzed (5.2%–8.3%) is comparable to commonly consumed dried fruits and is correlated with the content of lignin. The lignin was the main determinant of the total dietary fiber content in dates and its content was higher in semi-hard and hard fruit varieties.

date fruit Phoenix Dactylifera l an underutilized food seeking industrial valorization
NFS Journal, 2017Co-Authors: Sami Ghnimi, Syed Umer, Azharul Karim, Afaf KamaleldinAbstract:Background - The fruit of the date palm (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) is one of the most abundant fruits in the world. Hundreds of varieties having different texture, color, and flavor are available for valorization and adoption in food processing operations. Such utilization should be based on the fruit valuable characteristics; mainly its richness in dietary fiber and phenolic antioxidants. Scope and approach - This review article complements these existing reviews by primarily addressing the chemistry and processing of date fruits pulp and seeds with particular emphasis on dietary fiber and antioxidants as linked to important fruit processing and utilization features. Key findings and conclusions - Date fruits contain 6.5–11.5% total dietary fibers (of which 84–94% insoluble and 6–16% soluble dietary fiber) and is very rich in phenolic antioxidants (1–2%) especially condensed tannin pigments based on (−)-epicatechin oligomers. Date seeds contain about 15% of fiber, characterized by a high level of water-insoluble mannan fibers. Date fruits are widely available in the global market, mainly at mature Tamr stage, but there is still room for improvement. It has been suggested that date fruits and seeds can be exploited in some food applications utilizing their high levels of fiber and antioxidants. The incorporation of date fruits and seeds as food ingredients is still growing with the aim to promote the presence of dates in the modern's consumer shopping basket.

nutritional and biological characteristics of the date palm fruit Phoenix Dactylifera l a review
Food bioscience, 2020Co-Authors: Iftikhar M Hussain, Muhammad Farooq, Qamar Abbas SyedAbstract:Abstract The date palm (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) is a popular perennial fruit tree cultivated worldwide, especially in West Asia and North Africa. Its fruit (date) is equally liked around the globe. This systematic review critically evaluates past and recent literature from the perspective of nutritional profile and nutraceuticals attributes of different date varieties. A systematic literature search was done using the Scopus, Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), Google Scholar and Web of Science databases for references from 1971 to 2017, with 270 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. Date fruit is an inexpensive source of nutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids and dietary minerals (selenium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, dietary fiber, vitamins, carotenoids and fatty acids). It also contains polyphenols, anthocyanins, carotenoids, tannins, procyanidins, sterols, flavonols, flavones, anthocyanidins, isoflavones, phytoestrogens phenolic acids, cinnamic acid derivatives, volatile compounds and have strong antioxidant potential. The β-glucan from date fruits have strong anti-tumor, immune-modulating, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and cholesterol lowering potential, and encourage the growth of beneficial gut microflora. Pre-clinical studies have shown the anti-mutagenic, hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-tumor, nephro-protective, cardiovascular disease protective and anti-cancer properties of date fruit flesh, peel and pits.

a matured fruit extract of date palm tree Phoenix Dactylifera l stimulates the cellular immune system in mice
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2011Co-Authors: Koji Karasawa, Yuji Uzuhashi, Mitsuru Hirota, Hajime OtaniAbstract:The immunomodulatory effects of a hot water extract from matured fruit of the date palm tree (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) were investigated in comparison to those of prune and fig fruit in mice. The number of spleen IFN-γ(+)CD4(+), IFN-γ(+)CD49b(+) and IL-12(+)CD11b(+) cells was highest in mice given the date extract-added diet. Polyphenols identified in the date extract, such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, pelargonin and ferulic acid, stimulated IFN-γ mRNA expression significantly in mouse Peyer's patch cell cultures. Chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid also increased the number of IFN-γ(+)CD4(+) cells significantly, while some polyphenols increased the number of IFN-γ(+)CD49b(+) and IL-12(+)CD11b(+) cells significantly. On the other hand, a 70% ethanol-insoluble date extract treated with trypsin increased the number of IFN-γ(+)CD49b(+) and IL-12(+)CD11b(+) cells significantly. These results indicate that some polyphenols and polysaccharides present in date fruit stimulate the cellular immune system in mice.
