Single- or double-ring or basin (pilot) infiltration tests are typically performed to estimate infiltration rates. Vadose Zone hydraulic properties obtained from infiltration tests at land surface may differ greatly from those at depth, especially where the vadose Zone is very thick. Evaluation of vadose Zone properties is complicated by the Zone being two phase (air and water), as opposed to the single-phase system of the Phreatic Zone. Vadose Zone testing programs needs to consider the spatial variability in properties and the volume and area of investigation of tests relative to aquifer heterogeneity. Where project budgets and time are limited, the use of safety factors in design can compensate for uncertainty.

The research on weathering crust karsted reservoir beds and faulting showed strongly heterogeneous karsted reservoir beds characterized by horizontal contiguous distribution and vertical superimposition, with fracture-hole as the main reservoir space. High quality reservoir beds were developed in the vertical seepage Zone and horizontal Phreatic Zone, 0-200 meters below the unconformity. Reservoir bed quality of karsted carbonate rock was greatly improved by faulting, which increased the depth and size of karstification. A strike-slip fault developed over a long period in the NE direction and a thrust fault in the NW direction crossed each other, and caused distinct segmentation of the Tazhong No.1 Fault and dissection of the Yingshan Formation into multiple structural units. Forms of these speleothems are described along with the texture of minerals and the types of cavities in which speleothems were grown (original karst caves and open spaces formed during mineralization events). Conditions of their formation are described and genetic concept is proposed. The sulphide speleothems could be formed in the saturated (Phreatic) Zone, below the karst-water table, in cavities partly or entirely filled with gas.

Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae, 1992Co-Authors: Jerzy GłazekAbstract:Motyka and Szuwarzynski (1989), following their earlier paper (Forti et a l , 1986), discussed the origin of some sulphide speleothems found in Upper Silesian Zn-Pb ore deposits. They concluded that the sulphide stalactites not always gravity controlled could be formed in the Phreatic Zone, in cavities partly or entirely filled with gas. This hypothesis is a good explana tion for the seemingly contradictory presence of "typically vadose" speleothems evidently formed during the Phreatic ore-forming processes responsible for the bulk of Mississippi Valley-type deposits (cf. Dzulynski & Sass-Gustkiewicz, 1989). However, besides the unquestionable field observations of the sulphide speleothems in the Silesian mines (see references in Motyka & Szuwarzynski, 1989) and the evidence for the existence of gas bubbles in the Phreatic Zone of this area, the authors also attempted to explain the mechanism of sulphide precipitation. They wrote: „Recent speleothems result from the evaporation of carbonates [j/c/]. Of special importance is the evaporation from dropping karst water... If hydrogen sulphide is present in the gas bubble and heavy metals are contained in the solution, then sulphides may be precipitated.” (Motyka & Szuwarzynski, 1989, pp. 425-426). Many recent papers and modem textbooks dealing with karst processes indicate that this hypothesis is based on outdated premises (e.g. Jennings, 1985; Dreybroth, 1988; Ford & Williams, 1989).
