    Abstract:

    Abstract Twenty five identified and four unidentified species belonging to eleven genera of aquatic Phycomycetes were recovered from one hundred and thirty surface water samples which were collected mainly from Aswan High Dam Lake (100 samples) in addition to few samples from Aswan reservoir (10 sample) and the main stream of the River Nile at Aswan (20 samples) during the period from January to June, 1992. The richest water samples in aquatic Phycomycetes species were those characterized by relatively low temperatures (15.9 °C-20.3 °C) and pH ranged between 7.4 – 8.3. The poorest samples were characterized by relatively high temperature (20.6°C-33.1°C). pH values fluctuating between 6.3 and 9.2, dissolved oxygen varying from 4.5 to 10.6 mg/L, total soluble salts ranging from 149 to 303 mg/L and the organic matter content between 2.0 and 51.1 mg/L. Saprolegina and Pythium were the most frequent aquatic fungal genera recovered during this investigation whereas Aphanomyces, Dictyuchus, Pythiopsis, Leptomitus, Allomyces and Blastocladiopsis were less frequent.

    Abstract Seventy identified and six unidentified species in addition to 5 varieties which belong to 30 genera of aquatic Phycomycetes were recovered from 220 soil samples collected randomly from different localities in the Nile Delta and Suez canal regions including eleven governorates during November 1991. The highest number of aquatic fungal genera and species was obtained from El-Sharkya (24 identified and 4 unidentified species in addition to two varieties belonging to 14 aquatic fungal genera) and El-Dakahlia (24 identified and 4 unidentified species in addition to two varieties belonging to 13 aquatic fungal genera) Governorates, whereas the lowest was from Port-Said (13 identified and 2 unidentified species in addition to one variety belonging to 11 aquatic fungal genera).Pythium(high occurrence),Allomyces(moderate occurrences),Nowakowskiella, Aqualinderella, Achlya, Phytophthora, Olpidiopsis, DictyuchusandBlastocladiopsis(low occurrence each) were the most frequent aquatic fungal genera recovered during this investigation, whileAllomyces anomalus, Aqualinderella fermentans, Nowakowskiella elegans, Olpidiopsis brevispinosaandBlastocladiopsis parvawere the prevalent species. Soil samples which were characterized by relatively low temperature, high contents of organic matter and low total soluble salts were the richest in aquatic Phycomycetes and vice versa.

    Abstract The “aquatic Phycomycetes” constitute an ecologically and economically important assemblage of eukaryotic microorganisms, because they share many morphological traits and important ecological functions and they interact with each other in aquatic ecosystems. The last two decades of research have provided both molecular and structural evidence that the “aquatic Phycomycetes” are a diverse, polyphyletic grouping and therefore not a valid taxonomic entity. Very little research has been conducted for many years with the “aquatic Phycomycetes”, possibly because in general these microorganisms are often hard to isolate and maintain in most laboratory facilities, little background data has been available to identify the species, the studies were time consuming, the state of the art technology in many cases did not permit studies on these groups and they were thought to be economically and ecologically unimportant. However, this perception has changed recently. For example, some of these species (1) are now known to play important roles in biomass conversion and sequestration of CO2, (2) are parasites of many fungal, plant and animal species, (3) may harbor genes of important enzymes for industrial applications and (4) can serve as indicator species for eco-tox monitoring. This review discusses the assemblages of microorganisms which Sparrow placed into the aquatic Phycomycetes, their history in brief and their current phylogenetic placement.

  • AQUATIC Phycomycetes AND ASCOMYCETOUS FUNGI ISOLATED FROM ARTEMISIA ANNUA L. PLANTATION SOIL IN A NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY

    Abstract:

    Survey was carried out on the ascomycetous and aquatic fungi present in the soil of University of Jos Artemisia annua Plantation in Gangnum, Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State. Portions of the soil samples collected from three (3) locations were steamed in glass beaker placed in a steamer for 4-10 minutes at 100o C before inoculation. Fungal isolation was carried out using soil plate method incubated at 25 ± 2o C. Aquatic Phycomycetes were isolated using baits. Two (2) genera of aquatic Phycomycetes were isolated, including Achyla dubia and Allomyces arbuscular. Fifty–eight ascomycetous fungi were also isolated from the soil samples. The predominant ascomycetous fungi isolated include among others; Chaetomium bastrychodes, C. cancriodeum, C. cochloides, C. globosum, C. nigricolor, C. senegalensis, C. spirale, Aspergillus candidus A. flavus, A. fumigatus , A. glaucus, A. nidulans, A. niger, A. oryzae, A. terreus, F. avenaceum, F. oxysporum, F. roseum, F. solani, F. sporitrichioides, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. citrinum, P.notatum, P.expansum, Trichoderma harzianum, T. piluliferum, Alternaria alternata, Aureobasidium pullulans, Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium sp, Curvularia lunata, Scopulariopsis sp, Torula herbarum, Unidentified sp and a Basidiomycete. The physico-chemical properties of the soil samples were found to be varied, and were found to affect the distribution and population of fungi. The soil was found to be high in organic matter content which could have been as a result of activities of the species of fungi numerous in the soil. The implications of the results are discussed
