Phytochemical Analysis and In-Vitro Antioxidant Activity of Mimosa pudica Lin., Leaves

The chloroform extract was also subjected to preliminary Phytochemical Analysis, high performance thin layer chromatographic Analysis and fluorescence Analysis. Mimosa pudica Lin., is traditionally used for its anti-hyperglycemic, antidiarrhoeal and cytotoxic properties. The results of the present study reveals that the chloroform extract of Mimosa pudica Lin., leaves showed a significant antioxidant activity against free radical scavenging by DPPH, nitric oxide, superoxide dismutase and reducing power ability. The effects were comparable with the standard antioxidant ascorbic acid and these antioxidant properties were concentration dependent. Preliminary Phytochemical Analysis revealed the presence of phytoconstituents such as steroids, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, which is further confirmed by the thin layer chromatography and high performance thin layer chromatography and the results suggests that the chloroform extract of Mimosa pudica Lin., is a potential source of natural antioxidants and the extract have constituents which were capable of showing antioxidant activity and the said invitro antioxidant activity is due to antioxidant principle phenolic compounds and flavonoids. The significant antioxidant activity of chloroform extract of Mimosa pudica Lin., leaves was encouraging enough to pursue isolation and characterization of the active constituents which is responsible for the observed significant invitro antioxidant activity.

Journal of Global Pharma Technology, 2009Co-Authors: Rekha RajendranAbstract:Mimosa pudica known as chue Mue, is a prostrate shrubby plant with the compound leaves sensitive to touch, grows as weed in almost all parts of the country. In the present investigation, preliminary Phytochemical Analysis and antibacterial activity of different extracts (n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, methanol and methanolic fractions (No. I to VIII) of the leaves of Mimosa pudica was studied. The antibacterial activity was assessed by standard dilution test using Mueller Hinton Agar medium. The zone of inhibition of the fraction (VII) was compared with that of Standard antibiotic ciprofloxacin (5?g/disc) by disc diffusion method. The findings showed potential antibacterial properties of the extracts and fractions against the organisms tested. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracts and fractions was found to be 133.33 ?g/ml. But fraction no.VII was found to have 33.33 ?g/ml as MIC against the tested organisms. So the zone of inhibition of that fraction was comparable with that of ciprofloxacin. Preliminary Phytochemical Analysis may also helps to standardize this plant species from other related species. Our findings confirm that the traditional therapeutic claims for this plant, in near future surely be able to replace the conventional anti-microbial agents to which there is increased incidence of drug interactions and the study suggests that this plant is promising for development of phytomedicine for antibacterial properties.

This research was carried out to test the antibacterial activity and determine minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) to Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with agar diffution method and Phytochemical Analysis of geranium leaves by Harbone method. The young and old geranium leaves were blended then filtrated. The obtained filtrate was divided into two parts, one part heated by autoclave and the other was unheated . Each filtrate was tested against to Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Geranium leaves filtrate having the highest antibacterial activity was heated at 50 0 C until it become dry powder. The powder was used to measure MIC and Phytochemical Analysis. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of young leaves filtrate was higher than the old leaves filtrat, and the unheated leaves filtrate was higher than heated filtrate one. MIC of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, were as follows 15 mg/ml and 20 mg/mL respectively. The antibacterial activity of powder geranium’s leaves filtrate was weaker than 100 µg/mL ampicilline. Phytochemical Analysis of geranium leaves showed positive contents of alkaloid and triterpenoid.

Antimicrobial Activity and Phytochemical Analysis of Stem Bark of Balanites roxburghii Planch.

The Phytochemical Analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, gum and mucilage in varying concentration. Both the ethanolic and aqueous extracts inhibited the growth of the test organisms with S. typhi showing the highest susceptibility. This research supports the local use of the bark of the plant Balanites roxburghii for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes against bacterial infection.

In vitro Antioxidant Activity and Phytochemical Analysis of Stem Bark of Balanites roxburghii Planch

The antioxidant activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts from bark of Balanites roxburghii was evaluated by various in vitro antioxidant assays. The results indicate that both the extracts clearly have strong antioxidant effects. Both extracts exhibited significant antioxidant activity in DPPH, Nitric oxide and Hydroxyl radical induced in-vitro assay methods. The Phytochemical Analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, phenolic compound, gum and mucilage in varying concentration. The antioxidant activity may be attributed to flavonoids and phenolics present in aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Balanites roxburghii. Thus it could be concluded that the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Balanites roxburghii possess significant antioxidant property.

Phytochemical Analysis and Uses of Mimosa pudica Linn. in Chhattisgarh

Phytochemical Analysis of the extract revealed that the antimicrobial activity of the plant materials is due to the presence of active constituents like alkaloids or tannins.Mimosa pudica is used in disease related to blood and bile, bilious fever, piles, jaundice, leprosy, ulcer and smallpox. In the present study ethanolic extracts of Mimosa pudica leaves and roots sample were obtained using soxhlet apparatus. Phytochemical studies for the presence of revealed that tannin and proteins are present in both the samples.
