Some Microcontroller systems also include timers, counters, analog to digital (A/D) converters and so on. The chapter outlines the concepts, terminologies and working of Microcontroller systems and introduces programming and system design using programmable interface controller (Pic) series of Microcontrollers manufactured by Microchip Technology Inc. A Microcontroller is different from a microprocessor. It is basically a single chip computer used or embedded with other devices or equipment for control functions and is also called embedded controller. The working of Microcontroller is explained with block diagrams for the reader to understand the I/O functions fully. The different types of memory used in Microcontrollers are described and the hardware features are explained in general. Similarly, the Microcontroller architectures are explained with figures to benefit the reader. The chapter has an exhaustive coverage of number systems used in microprocessors and their conversion using arithmetic operations. Floating point numbers and arithmetic are available in detail with many examples and the conversion equivalents summarized in a table. It is manufactured by Microchip Technology Inc. The Pic Microcontroller architecture is essentially based on a modified Harvard RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) instruction set with dual-bus architecture, thus, providing fast and flexible design with an easy migration path from only 6 pins to 80 pins, and from 384 bytes to 128 kbytes of program memory. The Pic Microcontrollers are available with many different specifications depending on memory type, input-output (I/O) pin count, memory size, and special features. There are many models of Pic Microcontrollers available, all of these are upward compatible with each other and a program developed for one model can very easily, with no modifications, be run on other models of the family. The basic assembler instruction set of Pic Microcontrollers consists of only 33 instructions and most of the family members use the same instruction set.

In specific, it explains the function of each tool in detail. A Pic Microcontroller is essentially an integrated circuit and it is useless unless it is programmed and used properly in an electronic circuit to carry out a certain task. The hardware tools that are normally required before a Microcontroller-based project can be developed include desktop or a laptop PC Pic Microcontroller programmer device, a solderless breadboard or a similar circuit development board, Pic Microcontroller chip and support components, and power supply. All Microcontrollers also require a program or software for their operation. This program is developed and tested by the programmer. The software tools normally required in a Pic Microcontroller-based project development cycle include a text editor, PicBasic or PicBasic Pro compilers, and a Pic programmer device software. The chapter concludes with summarizing the steps required for the development of a project by giving a simple example.

The second grade is a combination of letters that form words or compensation, and while the final grade of the third grade represents the short form for the word. The third grade is used for shorthand writing. With this project, anyone not have knowledge about Braille writing can understand the Braille writing.

International Conference on Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Engineering, 2006Co-Authors: V K Jayasree, V P N Nampoori, P Radhakrishnan, C GirijavallabhanAbstract:This paper describes the design and development of a simple hardware setup for recording the blood volume pulse from the finger tip using transmission mode of photoplethysmography (PPG). PPG is known for its simple construction, ease of use and cost effectiveness and can provide information about the changes in the respiratory and cardiac activity and as well aid in earlier non-invasive diagnostics. The blood volume pulse has two components-one a systolic peak which mainly reflects the heart condition and activity, while the other which is called the diastolic peak determines the elasticity and other features of the vascular system. Since one blood volume pulse is generated for each heart beat, a Pic Microcontroller is used to measure the heart rate. The wavelet denoising algorithm is used to suppress the noise component in the PPG signal. For heart rate estimate comparison, PPG signals are evaluated by comparing their beat-to-beat estimates with the corresponding R-R intervals from an electrocardiogram (ECG).
