The History of the Hymn Books from the 19th Century Fellowship Movement (Language and Genesis)
Institutional Repository of Vilnius University, 2014Co-Authors: Strungytė-liugienė IngaAbstract:The subject of the dissertation is the history of the hymn books and hymns of the first half of 19th century Fellowship Movement in Lithuania Minor in textual and linguistic approach. The sources of the research are the hymn books „Visokios naujos giesmės arba evangeliški Psalmai“ (1817) and „Mažos giesmių knygelės“ (1819), supposedly composed by Kristijonas Endrikis Mertikaitis. For the first time, the detailed analysis of the structure, language and sources of the hymn books and their parts, the overview of the 19th century German hymn books from Königsberg, and the explanation of the role of Halle Pietism in composing the repertoire of the German and Lithuanian hymn books are provided in this dissertation. The examination of Lithuanian hymn books has led to the following conclusions: when composing the hymn book „Visokios naujos giesmės arba evangeliški Psalmai“ for the needs of Fellowship Movement, Mertikaitis essentially followed the official line for the formation of church hymn books. The portion of translated and original songs (52 in total) is simply taken from Lithuanian sources. The hymnal „Visokios naujos giesmės arba evangeliški Psalmai“ have to be divided linguistically into two groups - the hymns for laity and the hymns for clergy. Linguistic research confirmed the presumption of historians that hymn book „Mažos giesmių knygelės“ is composed by the same person, i. e. Mertikaitis. It was established that German sources of the hymn books are the hymn book „Kern Alter und Neuer geiſtreicher Lieder, Als der Ʒweyte Theil“ (1752) by Franz Albert Schultz, professor of divinity at the University of Königsberg, and the hymn book „Sämtliche Neue Lieder oder Evangelische Psalmen“ (1768) composed by Ernst Gottlieb Woltersdorf, Halle Pietist of younger generation. The hymns of radical Pietist Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf were not of high importance and influence on the repertoire of hymn books by Mertikaitis

Gereformeerde Pietisme, Hieronymus van Alphen (1746-1803) en die Hemelse versugting in Susanna Smit (1799-1863) se godsdienstige dagboeke
Scriber Editorial Systems, 2017Co-Authors: Raath, Andries GerhardusAbstract:Hieronymus van Alphen's pious poetry saw the light at a time Dutch Pietism had reached its zenith. Van Alphen's poetry comprise both poetic literature and hymns. Acting as co-author with Pieter Leonard van de Kasteele, Van Alphen was responsible for Proeve van stichtelijke mengel-poesij [Proofs of pious mixed poems] (1771). This source had a warm reception in religious circles at the Cape. His Proeve van stichtelijke gesangen [Proofs of pious hymns] (1802) had a similar impact in Holland and in Cape Reformed circles. Both works played a significant role in the Voortrekker woman Susanna Smit's religious mentality profile. Particularly the quest to be united to Jesus in heaven served as a significant point of reference in Susanna's spirituality. In this essay the impact of Van Alphen's pietistic poetry in Susanna's religious diaries and the effects thereof on her religious mentality profile are investigatedKey terms: Hieronymus van Alphen, mysticism, poems, Pietism, Susanna SmitHieronymus van Alphen se stigtelike poësie sien die lig op 'n tydstip wat die Nederlandse piëtisme 'n hoogtepunt bereik.

'UNISA Press', 2017Co-Authors: Raath, Andries GerhardusAbstract:Rutger Schutte (1708-1784), the pietistic author of popular hymnbooks, composed his spiritual verses at a time the religious culture of Pietism was approaching its zenith in the Netherlands and other European countries. In addition to his contribution to Een Nieuw Bundeltje Uitgeknipte Geestelyke Gezangen [A new collection of suitable spiritual songs] (third edition, 1721), he composed three collections of Stichtelijke Gezangen [Edifying hymns] from the early 1760s. In addition to the extensive prefaces in these collections, Schutte added long annotations, thereby creating the impression of academic depth – a style which elicited much criticism. However, Schutte’s hymns introduced a new popular culture of hymn-singing. At the time of his death his hymns had found staunch adherents in many spheres of life. This essay identifies several themes central to Schutte’s hymns: the quest for practical piety; the tension between the heavenly Jerusalem and the earthly Jericho; and the spiritual marriage bond between Jesus and the believer. These themes also surface prominently in the spiritual diaries of the Voortrekker woman Susanna Smit. The entries in her diaries from the early 1840s reflect extracts from Schutte’s hymn “The voyage to Jerusalem†in particular. Her descriptions of and reflection on the metaphor of the Christian pilgrim’s voyage to the eternal Jerusalem served as an important point of reference in her spiritual exercises

Transkonfessionalisme, konstruktivisme en Karel Schoeman (1939–2017) oor die Kaapse piëtisme
AOSIS, 2017Co-Authors: Andries W.g. RaathAbstract:Transconfessionalism, constructivism and Karel Schoeman (1939–2017) on Cape Pietism. The South African historiographer Karel Schoeman’s (1939–2017) research on 17th and 18thcentury ecclesiastical life and Protestant spirituality at the Cape is embedded in the context of transconfessional and transnational Pietism research. As such, Schoeman’s transconfessional approach produces important correctives to traditional constructivist Pietism approaches. Schoeman’s approach enables him to study Cape Protestant spirituality of the 17th and 18th centuries within the context of Pietism being the most significant devotional movement (Frommigkeitsbewegung) of Protestantism after the Reformation, manifesting Pietism primarily as a religious phenomenon with astonishing spatial, temporal, social, spiritual, churchconfessional and theological complexities that arose around the turn of the 16th to the 17th century from criticism of the existing ecclesiastical and spiritual relations at nearly the same time in England, the Netherlands and Germany. From there it spread to Switzerland, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and the United States. It contributed to a great extent to the worldwide Protestant mission and has remained an active movement into the present

Tropologiese Hoogliedmetafore en vroulike mistieke piëtisme in Suid-Afrikaanse pioniergemeenskappe, 1760–1860
AOSIS, 2016Co-Authors: Andries W.g. RaathAbstract:The ego-focus of pioneer women on the South African frontier, 1760–1860, reflects distinct traits of mystical spirituality. The pioneer spirituality of women on the borders increasinglycame to expression in ego-texts with experiential inclinations. The leaning towards Jesuscentredmystical spirituality developed parallel to pietistic tendencies in Holland and Germany, and allegorical and tropological applications of the bridal metaphors in the Song of Songsformed a distinct element of female Pietism on the frontier. Women believers in the interiorfavoured tropological applications of bridal metaphors in the Song of Songs. The popularity ofsuch tropological applications can firstly be attributed to the physical conditions under whichpioneer women found themselves. Secondly, the availability of German pietistic workscontributed towards the religious culture of mystical and individualistic readings of bridalmetaphors in the Song of Songs. Tropological readings of the Song of Songs’ bridal metaphorsare traced to the theology of Bernard of Clairvaux particularly and other pre-reformationalmystical sources

Hendrina Cecilia Kruger se godsdienstige mentaliteitsprofiel in haar mistieke oordenkingsbundel (ca. 1750–1810) uit die trekboertyd
AOSIS, 2015Co-Authors: Andries W.g. RaathAbstract:Hendrina Cecilia Kruger’s religious mentality profile in her mystical devotional book (c. 1750−1810) from the Trekboer period. The religious views of the Trekboers on the frontier were shaped by pietistic religious literature circulating in the Cape interior. The religious ego-text of Hendrina Cecilia Kruger reflects elements of two streams of Pietism: Dutch Second Reformation devotional literature and the works of German pietists in the line of Spener and other German mystics. The cumulative impact of experiential faith in Reformed mysticism and the mystical views of German Pietism produced a spirituality of exceptional intensity in the pioneering communities of Reformed believers on the frontier. It is concluded that the mystical religious mentality of the Trekboer pietists exhibited exceptional levels of faith amidst dire physical and emotional conditions on the frontier. In spite of high levels of mystical Pietism in her devotional book Kruger remained committed to the basic tenets of Reformed spirituality
