As neonatal health remains an ongoing cause for concern, identifying determinants that impede fetal growth is crucial. Under this pretext, the study aimed to analyze the impact of World War 1 in the neutral city of Basel on neonatal health by assessing changes in anthropometric parameters. A retrospective analysis of yearly cross sections of term births in the maternity hospital of Basel from 1912 to 1923 was conducted (n = 3718). We tested adjusted anthropometry for time trends in comparison to a pre-war baseline, including birth Weight, Placenta Weight, birth length, ponderal index and gestational age. Interrelations of Placenta Weights and birth Weights were examined separately through birth Weight to Placenta Weight (BW/PW) ratios and residuals of Placenta Weight to birth Weight regressions. Birth Weights, Placenta Weights and residuals were at their lowest in 1918/19, a trend not reflected in BW/PW ratios. Birth lengths remained low while ponderal indexes declined during the entire period of war, gestational age remained rather stable. 1918/19 were the pinnacle years for the population of Basel, who were suffering from general detrimental economic conditions, a food supply crisis and an outbreak of the Spanish Flu. These adverse circumstances coincided with low birth and Placenta Weights, residuals depicting the correlation of birth Weights to Placental Weights more closely than bw/pw ratios. Study design: Data was extracted from our computerized registry; McGill Obstetrics and Neonatal Database (MOND). The registry includes all the obstetrical data on all deliveries at the McGillUniversity, including Placental Weight, Placental pathologies, maternal and perinatal complications. 20,635 singleton deliveries and 527 twin deliveries were included. Placental Weight, gestational age at delivery, birth Weight and gender were retrieved. Tables and figures for the3rd ,10th ,25th, 50th, 75th 90th, and 97th percentile of Placental Weight by gestational age, Placental Weight by birth Weight and Placental to birth Weight ratio by gestational age were produced. Results: Tables and figures are presented for Placental percentiles curves according to gestational age, gestational Weight and gender for singleton and twin deliveries. In addition, tables and figures are presented for the ratio of Placental Weight to birth Weight. Conclusions: Population percentile curves have been produced for Placental Weight and for the ratio of Placental Weight to birth Weight to for singleton and twin deliveries.

Setting Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Population All singleton live births in Norway from 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2002. Methods In a cohort of children born in Norway, Placental Weights and the ratio of the birthWeight to the Placental Weight were analysed to produce percentile curves. Main outcome measures Placental Weight, birthWeight-to-Placental Weight ratio. Results Tables and figures are presented for Placental percentiles curves according to gestational age and gender. Also, tables and figures are presented for the ratio of birthWeight to Placental Weight. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first time that population percentile curves have been produced for Placental Weights and hence for the ratio of birthWeight to Placental Weight. These percentile curves may act as a reference for other populations as well until population-specific curves can be produced.
