    Throughout history, neurosurgical procedures have been fundamental in advancing neuroscience; however, this has not always been without deleterious side effects or harmful consequences. While critical to the progression of clinical neuroscience during the early 20th century, yet, at the same time, poorly tolerated by patients, Pneumoencephalography is one such procedure that exemplifies this juxtaposition. Presented herein are historical perspectives and reflections on the role of the Pneumoencephalography in the diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric illnesses.

    SUMMARY: The beginning of neuroradiology can be traced to the early 1900s with the use of skull radiographs. Ventriculography and Pneumoencephalography were introduced in 1918 and 1919, respectively, and carotid angiography, in 1927. Technical advances were made in these procedures during the next 40 years that lead to improved diagnosis of intracranial pathology. Yet, they remained invasive procedures that were often uncomfortable and associated with significant morbidity. The introduction of CT in 1971 revolutionized neuroradiology. Ventriculography and Pneumoencephalography were rendered obsolete. The imaging revolution continued with the advent of MR imaging in the early 1980s. Noninvasive angiographic techniques have curtailed the use of conventional angiography, and physiologic imaging gives us a window into the function of the brain. In this historical review, we will trace the origin and evolution of the advances that have led to the quicker, less invasive diagnosis and resulted in more rapid therapy and improved outcomes.

    SUMMARY A method of lumbar Pneumoencephalography in newborns with myelomeningocele is presented. The findings show that the lumbar route is of value in delineating the pathology especially of the upper cervical area, the basal cisterns and the supratentorial subarachnoid spaces. The procedure is relatively simple and no untoward reactions were seen. RESUME L'auteur presente une methode de pneumoencephalographie lombaire chez les nouveauxnes atteints de myelomeningocele. Les observations montrent que la voie lombaire est interessante pour depeindre la pathologic surtout au nivean de la region cervicale superieure, des cisternes basales et des espaces supratentoriels sousarachnoidiens et on n'a note aucune reaction defavorable et la methode est relativement simple. RESUMEN Se describe un metodo de neumoencefalografia lumbar en recien nacidos afectos de un mielomeningocele. Los hallazgos muestran que la via lumbar es de valor en delinear la patologia sobre todo de la region cervical superior, las cisternas basales y los espacios subaracnoideos supratentoriales. La tecnica es bastante sencilla, y no se han visto ningunas reacciones adversas.

  • Sequelae to Pneumoencephalography

    SUMMARY Fifty patients were examined clinically and neurologically for seven days after pneumo-encephalography. Headache was present in 78%, neck stiffness in 3400, pyrexia in 38%, vomiting in 340/, tachycardia in 740/, a change in the level of consciousness in 18%, and abnormal neurological signs in 3000. Of the 13 patients with epilepsy, there was an increased frequency of seizures in four, associated with increased EEG epileptiform activity in three. EEG abnormality either appeared or increased in 7400 of cases on the second day after the air study. A mechanism for the production of these sequelae is proposed. It is concluded that these findings indicate that in most cases an organic brain syndrome follows Pneumoencephalography. Since its introduction in 1919, pneumoencephalo-graphy has been observed to produce a wide range of side-effects: Bohn (1937), in a study of 1,000 cases, reported headache, vomiting, py-rexia, tachycardia, changes in blood pressure, stiffness in the neck, and mental confusion.
