    Abstract:

    Iron-based superconductors have caused great interest regarding high-field Applications due to their good properties. A common fabrication route for 122-type wires and tapes is the ex situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. From the Point of Application in the high magnetic field, where high electromagnetic forces are present, the conductor strength and its tolerance to the mechanical load are important issues. In order to understand the comparatively integrated critical current characterization of the Sr-122 tape under axial strain, the so-called U-spring setup was used to test a silver-sheathed Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tape sample with a single core over a wide range of applied axial strain (−0.6% ~ 0.3%). It was found that when the sample was compressed, the critical current performance showed reversiblity; meanwhile the irreversible tensile strain limit was quite low. The Sr-122/Ag tape shows very good performance under compression, and a possible conductor design should be considered to make the superconductor work at proper compressive strain states for future Applications.

    Abstract Concentrations in soil and efficacy of 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D)+chloropicrin and methyl isothiocyanate (MITC) against the survival of Phytophthora capcisi , Rhizoctonia solani and yellow nutsedge ( Cyperus esculentus L.) were studied in plastic-mulched Southern Georgia sandy soil beds. Beds were treated with InLine (60.8% 1,3-D+33.3% chloropicrin) at 93.5, 187, and 280.5 l ha −1 and Vapam (42% metam sodium) 233.8, 467.5 and 701.3 l ha −1 . 1,3-D+chloropicrin and MITC concentrations in soil were monitored after drip Application for 7 d and 240 h, respectively, from pre-selected sites in beds. 1,3-D+chloropicrin and MITC concentrations decreased with time and distance from the emitter. Survival of P. capsici , R. solani and yellow nutsedge in treated beds was higher with distance from the emitter. These methyl bromide alternatives did not diffuse laterally at effective concentrations beyond the Point of Application. Improved Application techniques are required to improve the lateral distribution of these alternatives.

    The effects of metam-sodium Application rate on soil residence time, spatial and temporal distributions of methyl isothiocyanate and pest control efficacy were studied in a Georgia sandy soil. Metam-sodium 420 g L−1 SL was drip applied at rates of 147 and 295 L ha−1 in plastic-mulched raised beds. Methyl isothiocyanate concentrations in soil air space were monitored from four preselected sites: 10 and 20 cm below the emitter, and 20 and 30 cm laterally away from the emitter at 3, 12, 24, 48, 72, 120 and 240 h after chemigation. A higher rate of metam-sodium Application resulted in higher methyl isothiocyanate concentrations in the soil. Highest methyl isothiocyanate concentrations were found at 20 cm below the emitter, and lowest at 30 cm laterally away from the emitter. Methyl isothiocyanate concentrations decreased with time and distance from the emitter. Lower methyl isothiocyanate concentration × time product values at 20 and 30 cm away from the emitter resulted in lower mortalities of Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.).     The capabilities of capillary electrophoresis (CE) for serum protein electrophoresis and immunotyping have been demonstrated. CE-based systems specifically designed for serum protein electrophoresis and immunotyping via immunosubtraction (IS) are now available and are being evaluated for efficiency, specificity and sensitivity by several groups. The use of CE for serum protein electrophoresis and immunotyping (IS) in the clinical laboratory compares well with agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) and immunofixation (IF) for the detection and characterization of monoclonal proteins. In addition to routine use, this technology is useful for a subset of serum samples that are difficult to interpret with conventional technology. In this study, sera abnormalities difficult to detect/interpret by AGE-IF are subdivided into four categories: (i) patients with polyclonal increases in immunoglobulin, (ii) Point of Application artifacts, (iii) abnormalities in the beta region, and (iv) patients with free light chains. CE is superior to AGE for evaluating samples characterized by the above abnormalities. Sera containing monoclonal proteins within a polyclonal increase are easier to detect by CE as well as being easier to type by IS than by IF. Point-of-Application artifacts, periodically observed with AGE, do not exist on CE since the Point of detection is remote from the Point of Application. Enhanced resolution in the beta region allows for increased detection of monoclonal proteins migrating in this region. Some free light chains are undetected by CE as a result of no apparent abnormalities on the CE serum protein profile and, thus, still require IF for detection. CE detects more serum electrophoretic abnormalities than AGE in this clinically important group of patients with Bence Jones proteinemia.

    This study details the qualitative results from a comparative evaluation of agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) and (CZE) as a screening procedure for monoclonal proteins in serum. Three hundred and five serum samples were analyzed by the two techniques; samples suspected of containing monoclonal proteins based on abnormalities observed with AGE or CZE were confirmed by immunoelectrophoresis and/or immunofixation. CZE separation conditions were simple (requiring only a bare silica capillary and 150 mM borate buffer, pH 10.0) and separation was complete in under 120 s. The results obtained by CZE were comparable or better than those obtained with AGE. Samples displaying "Point-of-Application" artifacts on AGE were not problematic by CZE analysis; an abnormal profile, due to the presence of a monoclonal protein, or a normal profile were clearly observable. The rapid analysis, excellent reproducibility, automation and relatively high throughput (approximately 90 samples per 8 h on a single instrument) sets the stage for CZE analysis of serum proteins to be used routinely in a clinical setting.

  • Calculation of earth pressure on rigid retaining walls with considerations to the seismic load and soil stress-deflection

    Abstract:

    At present, the calculation of active earth pressure behind retaining walls is mainly based on the hypothesis that the fracture surface of rolling earth behind retaining walls is straight-running through wall heels. However, most experiments have proven that this hypothesis is false. In this study, active earth pressure behind retaining walls under seismic loading was discussed from the perspective of stress deflection. Stress on soil layer behind the vertical retaining wall was analyzed by quasi-static method. Then, the expression of seismic angle of rupture was proposed by referring to the balance of horizontal forces and changes with wall height. On this basis, the calculation formulas of active earth pressure, seismic active earth force, total moment at the wall and the Point of Application of active thrust from the base of wall were acquired by solving this balance equation. Calculated results were compared with test data and results of other methods. The rationality of the proposed method was verified. Thus, the proposed method is applicable to multi-layered filling behind the retaining wall
