Responsible Leadership in Global Business: A New Approach to Leadership and Its Multi-Level Outcomes
Journal of Business Ethics, 2012Co-Authors: Christian Voegtlin, Moritz Patzer, Andreas Georg SchererAbstract:The article advances an understanding of responsible leadership in global business and offers an agenda for future research in this field. Our conceptualization of responsible leadership draws on deliberative practices and discursive conflict resolution, combining the macro-view of the business firm as a Political Actor with the micro-view of leadership. We discuss the concept in relation to existing research in leadership. Further, we propose a new model of responsible leadership that shows how such an understanding of leadership can address the challenges of globalization. We thereby propose positive outcomes of responsible leadership across levels of analysis. The model offers research opportunities for responsible leadership in global business.

The Business Firm as a Political Actor
Business & Society, 2009Co-Authors: Andreas Georg Scherer, Guido Palazzo, Dirk MattenAbstract:The state governance system seems to be incapable to address sufficiently global public goods problems or to regulate global business so that the public interest is served. At the same time, international governmental organizations are unable to fill the governance gap while nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) criticize the behavior of business firms along their supply chains. Therefore, business firms are confronted with increasing social and environmental demands and are requested to take responsibility for issues of public concern. As a response, some business firms engage with corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects and directly contribute to the production of public goods. These developments challenge the received theory of the firm and its strict separation of public and private domains. Corporations become Political Actors. In this introductory essay, the guest editors first elaborate on the concept of politics and describe the challenges that lead to the new Political role of global busine...

The Future of Global Corporate Citizenship: Towards a New Theory of the Firm as a Political Actor
Handbook of Research on Global Corporate Citizenship, 2008Co-Authors: Guido Palazzo, Andreas Georg SchererAbstract:In this chapter, Guido Palazzo and Andreas Georg Scherer point to future research directions on corporate citizenship. They outline topics that emerge from the discussions in the Handbook of Research on Global Corporate Citizenship and address some the open questions that are still to be solved. For example, the meaning and the limits of responsibility for the corporation, the questions evolving around a new concept of corporate politics, or the self-regulation of the corporation as seen in the debate on 'governance without government' are considered. Further, the future debate on corporate citizenship needs to address the role of leadership in this context, as well as the question of the dark sides of responsibility. In this chapter, the authors summarize new challenges and point to interesting directions for future research on global corporate citizenship.

toward a Political conception of corporate responsibility business and society seen from a habermasian perspective
Academy of Management Review, 2007Co-Authors: Andreas Georg Scherer, Guido PalazzoAbstract:We review two important schools within business and society research, which we label positivist and post-positivist corporate social responsibility (CSR). The former is criticized because of its instrumentalism and normative vacuity, and the latter because of its relativism, foundationalism, and utopianism. We propose a new approach, based on J?rgen Habermas's theory of democracy, and define the new role of the business firm as a Political Actor in a globalizing society.

the web and the 2004 ep election comparing Political Actor web sites in 11 eu member states
Information polity, 2005Co-Authors: N W Jankowski, Kirsten A Foot, Randy Kluver, Steve SchneiderAbstract:This study reports on incorporation of the Web during the 2004 European Parliament election as played out in 11 EU Member States. Based on an analysis of Web site features related to a conceptualization of Political engagement, the study examines utilization of features reflecting information provision and opportunities for discussion and Political action. The findings reflect the low level of importance historically ascribed to European Parliament elections. The study also illustrates the diversity in how the Web was incorporated into this election campaign across the 11 EU Member States, which may be a consequence of the broad range of Political cultural and contextual aspects shaping this pan-European event.
