  • Transnational Political Engagement and emigrant voting
Journal of Contemporary European Studies, 2018
    Co-Authors: Johanna Elsa Maria Peltoniemi
    Abstract:

ABSTRACTGlobalisation, European integration and increased migration have made life more mobile. Consequently, electorates have become increasingly dispersed geographically. Utilising survey data compiled from Finnish citizens residing` abroad (n = 1,067), we study transnational Political participation of emigrant voters. First, we examine how national identification relates with turnout in parliamentary elections and which factors influence emigrants’ voting decision. Second, we analyse how transnational Political Engagement of Finnish emigrants could be described. The key findings suggest that identification with the sending country has little or no influence on the likelihood of voting in homeland parliamentary elections. Instead, distance to the closest polling station, interest in politics, time lived abroad, age and educational level significantly influence an emigrant’s probability of voting. We suggest that ‘zero-sum relationship’ best describes transnational Political Engagement among Finnish emig...

  • Online Political Debate: Motivating Factors and Impact on Political Engagement
    2013
    Co-Authors: Asbjørn Følstad, Marika Lüders
    Abstract:

Online Political debate is increasing in importance, both as a real world phenomenon and as an object of scientific study. We present a survey study exploring people’s motivations for engaging in online Political debate and how such debate may impact their general Political Engagement. The survey was conducted among 90 participants of an online environment for Political debate hosted by one of the main Norwegian Political parties. We found four motivational factors with relevance for participation in online Political debate: engaging topic, want to contribute, frustration, and reciprocal learning. Sixty-four per cent of the participants answered that the online environment for Political debate could make them more Politically engaged. These participants reported that such an increase in Political Engagement could be due to the online environment providing a sense of influence, access to Political debate, a means for getting updated, a lowered threshold for participation, motivating local Political Engagement, and awareness concerning Political events.

  • Undocumented, not Unengaged: Local Immigration Laws and the Shaping of Undocumented Mexicans’ Political Engagement
    Social Forces, 2020
    Co-Authors: Angela S. García
    Abstract:

Abstract cholars have long demonstrated that laws convey messages to people about how government views them and that these messages impact targeted groups’ Political behavior. Drawing from this insight, this study asks if and how local immigration laws shape the Political lives of undocumented Mexican immigrants in US cities. The article advances a tripartite theory of Political Engagement to demonstrate that the design of local immigration measures impacts the Political socialization, Political efficacy, and Political participation of immigrant communities on the ground. This multidimensional model contributes a more holistic account of undocumented immigrants’ Political Engagement than is available in the existing literature. With a matched case comparison of undocumented life in cities with divergent immigration laws, the article shows that local opportunity structures embedded within receiving locales profoundly influence the nature of Political Engagement for undocumented residents.

  • communication practices and Political Engagement with climate change a research agenda
Environmental Communication-a Journal of Nature and Culture, 2017
Co-Authors: Anabela Carvalho, Margit Van Wessel, Pieter Maeseele
    Abstract:

ABSTRACTIn this article, we call for a refocusing of research on citizens’ Political Engagement with climate change. In doing so, we argue that communication practices not only help create the conditions for Political Engagement but they also comprise the modes of such Engagement. Our argument proceeds in four steps. First, we review the literature on public Engagement with climate change, concluding that there is a lack of attention to issues regarding the Political. Consequently, we make the case for a refocusing of research on Political Engagement. Second, we explain how the notion of Political subjectivity helps us to understand the relation between communication practices and Engagement with the politics of climate change. Third, we discuss examples of dominant communication practices that constrain citizen Political Engagement by depoliticizing climate change, and alternative communication practices that have the potential to politicize. We end by outlining the many research questions that relate to...
