everyday racism as predictor of Political racism in flemish belgium
Journal of Social Issues, 2008Co-Authors: Jaak Billiet, Hans De WitteAbstract:Two aspects of research on racism in Flanders (Belgium) are discussed in this article based on results from large-scale surveys between 1991 and 2003. The first relates to the (negative) attitudes of the majority toward foreigners (everyday racism). The second relates to the vote for an extreme right-wing Political party that emphasizes anti-immigrant viewpoints in its Political Program and propaganda (Political racism). Our main research question is how both forms of racism are related. First, theories to explain Political racism are reviewed. Some theories suggest an extreme right-wing vote to be motivated by a content-related agreement with (part of) the Program of these parties (e.g., racism, nationalism, or authoritarianism). Other theories suggest that this vote represents an antiPolitical protest vote. From these theories, hypotheses are derived regarding the background characteristics and attitudes that are associated with an extreme right-wing vote (e.g., the Vlaams Blok). These hypotheses are tested using data from election research in 1991, 1999, and 2003. The results suggest that the vote for the party Vlaams Blok is a rational vote. Of all theories, the theory suggesting that everyday racism plays a prominent role received most support. Everyday racism thus motivates Political racism in the Flemish part of Belgium. The topic of racism has been the focus of an extensive amount of research in the Flemish part of Belgium during the last few decades. Two aspects of this topic have been studied most intensively: the attitudes of the majority toward foreigners or immigrants and extreme right-wing voting behavior. In this article, both research lines will be combined.

from taiwan independence to hong kong independence how hong kong followed the steps of taiwan on the road of separatism
2019Co-Authors: Jie Zhu, Xiaoshan ZhangAbstract:In November 2015, during the Fifth District Council election, some candidates publicly put forward Political Program of “Hong Kong Nation”; on 8 February 2016, a riot broke out in Mong Kok, which later disclosed by the media, was plotted by radical nativism groups; on 21 April 2016, the young and mid-aged democrats in Hong Kong released a Resolution on Hong Kong’s Future, alleging that the Political status of Hong Kong should be determined by Hong Kong people by “internal self-determination”… All these signs indicate that “Hong Kong Independence” is not limited to “venting of emotions” and that “Hong Kong Independence” has evolved from an aimless trick to a well-targeted separatist movement. The wolf of “Hong Kong Independence” is really coming! Ever since the rout of “Umbrella Movement,” the appeal for “true democracy” fell through; some radical democrats turned to separatism, hence the establishment of all sort of pro-independence organizations and miscellaneous “Hong Kong Independence” slogans and theories. To be fair, the outburst of “Hong Kong Independence” has only been a few years. Whereas, these slogans and theories of “Hong Kong Independence” are of little novelty, just a few decades ago, the same kind of theory and movement were just as popular in Taiwan. As a matter of fact, by comparison of the theory of “Hong Kong Independence” with that of the “Taiwan Independence,” we can see the great influence of the latter on the former. The point of studying the separatist theory in both Taiwan and Hong Kong, or inspecting the “demonstration effect” of “Taiwan Independence” on “Hong Kong Independence,” lies within, for one, by comparing and revealing the similarities in the two: we could invoke the past experience in fighting “Taiwan Independence” to refute “Hong Kong Independence”; and for another, by disclosing the difference between Taiwan and Hong Kong, we could show the irrationality of “Hong Kong Independence” following the steps of “Taiwan Independence,” which contributes to the correction of “Hong Kong Independence” discourse.

multi scalar practices of the korean state in global climate politics the case of the global green growth institute
Antipode, 2017Co-Authors: Jintae Hwang, Sanghun Lee, Detlef MullermahnAbstract:The paper examines the significance of state territoriality and the related multi-scalar practices of the state in the light of the symptoms of post-politics exemplified in global environmental governance. The focus rests on the South Korean government's Green Growth (GG) strategy and the efforts to export this strategy as a role model to emerging economies worldwide through the establishment of the Global Green Growth Institute. We begin with the question why the Korean government is going global with a Political Program that is heavily disputed at home. We then study the practices by which the state manages to maintain its territoriality under the conditions of global climate change. Lastly, we discuss how multi-scalar practices of environmental governance in the GG strategy are applied by state and non-state actors both in Korea and abroad.
