The history is divided into three phases—the pioneer phase 1916–1950, the building phase 1951–1973, and the mature phase 1974–present-day. We also explore relevant studies prior to Lennart von Post’s seminal lecture in 1916 in Kristiania (Oslo) in an attempt to trace how the idea of Quaternary Pollen Analysis with quantitative Pollen counting and stratigraphical Pollen diagrams developed.

Pollen Analysis of present day striped hyena hyaena hyaena scats from central iran implications for dryland paleoecology and animal paleoethology

It generally lives in semi-arid desert steppe regions, often denning in small caves, rock shelters, and burrows close to human settlements. Bone fragments of wild and domestic animals and desiccated scats are frequently found in the hyena dens. In this study, eight striped hyena desiccated scats were subjected to Pollen Analysis. All scats were rich in Pollen and the exine was well-preserved with no visible sign of corrosion. Pollen spectra revealed interesting information on the regional and local vegetation, as well as the foraging behavior and diet of the animal. They reflected an array of different landscapes ranging from natural/semi-natural xerophytic desert steppes, agricultural fields, and grazing pastures. Some scats contained certain Pollen taxa very rarely observed in wetland sediments, indicating the high potential of hyena “copropalynology” in providing detailed information on the past floristic composition of the landscape. When comparing with archeobotanical data from the area, the hyena scat assemblages show that the general physiognomy of the landscape has remained almost unchanged since the 6th millennium B.C., with only minor changes in the composition or density of the woody components of the desert steppe. As most of the Holocene fossil coprolites in archeological and paleontological sites of SW Asia would have been left by striped hyena, the study of the modern analogs of such accumulations in extant hyena dens is helpful to correctly interpret the fossil faunal assemblages to reconstruct the paleolandscapes, land-use change, and animal paleoethology.

This study is the first palynological Analysis of coprolites in Iran to examine their potential in palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. Four Pollen-rich coprolite samples were studied from the Wezmeh Cave in western Iran with a recently discovered late Quaternary (70 ka to sub-recent) faunal assemblage dominated by carnivore remains. Pollen Analysis of coprolites shows that a mountain steppe dominated the glacial landscapes of the area. Only one sub-recent sample indicates the presence of dispersed tree stands. One sample was rich in Tulipa Pollen suggesting that tulips were relatively abundant during the glacial periods. Cousinia (Asteraceae) Pollen was found in all samples with considerable values in one sample indicating its importance in the glacial landscapes of the Zagros Mountains. This study revealed that coprolite Pollen Analysis can provide an invaluable source of information to understand the floristic composition of palaeolandscapes of the Irano-Turanian region.

Journal of Quaternary Science, 2006Co-Authors: Ioan Tantau, Jacques-louis De Beaulieu, Maurice Reille, Sorina FarcasAbstract:We present here the results of Pollen Analysis of two sequences of about 8.06 m and 11.90 m length, originating from two adjacent peat bogs in the southern part of Transylvania province, Romania (155 and 122 Pollen spectra). The vegetation record, which is supported by 17 14 C dates, begins in the Late Glacial interstadial when forest recolonisation began with the development of Pinus, without a pioneer Betula phase. Picea began to expand from regional refuges. After a well-defined Younger Dryas, the Holocene opens with the expansion of Betula, Ulmus and Picea, followed, at about 10 400 cal. yr BP, by Fraxinus, Quercus and Tilia. The Corylus optimum is correlated with the Atlantic chronozone (after 8600 cal. yr BP). The local establishment of Carpinus occurred at about 6500 cal. yr BP, with a maximum at about 5700 cal. yr BP. Fagus Pollen is regularly recorded after 8200 cal. yr BP. This taxon became dominant at about 3700 cal. yr BP. The first indications of human activities appear at around 7200 cal. yr BP. Vegetation history in the Eastern Romanian Carpathians: Pollen Analysis of two sequences from the Mohoş crater

The vegetation history, supported by 24 ^14C dates is described since the Late Glacial. At the onset of the Holocene Ulmus first appears, together with Betula . Among the main components of the Quercetum mixtum ( Quercus , Fraxinus , Tilia, Corylus ) that became established almost simultaneously by around 9000 B.P., Quercus frequencies rarely exceed 10%. The local establishment of Carpinus is about 6000 b.p . Its maximum occurred between 4500 and 3000 b.p . Fagus Pollen is regularly recorded since 8000 b.p . Its absolute dominance tooks place at about 3000 b.p . Picea Pollen is present since the Late Glacial. The first indications of human activities appear at around 6500 b.p .
