An Update on Isocyanide-Based Multicomponent Reactions in Polymer Science
Topics in Current Chemistry, 2017Co-Authors: Audrey Llevot, Andreas C. Boukis, Stefan Oelmann, Katharina Wetzel, Michael A. R. MeierAbstract:Developments and progress in Polymer Science are often inspired by organic chemistry. In recent years, multicomponent reactions—especially the Passerini and Ugi reactions—have become very important tools for macromolecular design, mainly due to their modular character. In this review, the versatility of the Passerini and Ugi reactions in Polymer Science is highlighted by discussing recent examples of their use for monomer synthesis, as Polymerization techniques, and for postPolymerization modification, as well as their suitability for architecture control, sequence control, and sequence definition.

The Endless Polymer Science Frontier
Chemical & Engineering News, 2000Co-Authors: Michael FreemantleAbstract:From the ACS meeting There is hardly an aspect of our lives that is not touched by synthetic Polymers. All of us, by quickly looking around our laboratories, offices, and homes, could easily identify a score of examples of Polymers in use as commercial products, packaging, and coatings. There is little doubt that, as the 21st century progresses and Polymer Science and technology develops, Polymeric materials will further impact our lives in a variety of ways. But how? A symposium titled "Frontiers for Polymer Science in the 21st Century" set out to provide some pointers and in particular to showcase hot new areas of Polymer research. It was organized by the Macromolecular Secretariat and cosponsored with the Cellulose, Paper & Textile Division, the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science & Engineering, the Division of Polymer Chemistry, and the Rubber Division. The symposium was chaired by S. Richard Turner, a research fellow in the Polymers ...

FOUNDATION OF Polymer Science
Chemical & Engineering News, 1999Co-Authors: Michael FreemantleAbstract:The American Chemical Society and the German Chemical Society (GDCh) jointly designated the foundation of Polymer Science by German chemist Hermann Staudinger (1881-1965) as an International Historic Chemical Landmark at a ceremony in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, on April 19. During the ceremony, GDCh President Erhard Meyer-Galow and ACS President Ed Wasserman unveiled a memorial plaque, which will be installed at Hermann Staudinger House, the home of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry in Freiburg. Staudinger established the institute in the chemistry department at Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg in January 1940. The institute, which is now an independent university institute, was the first European research institute devoted exclusively to Polymer research. The inscription on the plaque reads: "This building is named after Hermann Staudinger, who, between 1926 and 1956, carried out his pathbreaking research on macromolecular chemistry in Freiburg. His theories on the Polymer structures of ...
