"False consensus" refers to individuals with (v. without) an experience judging that experience as more (v. less) prevalent in the Population. We examined the role of people's perceptions of their social circles (family, friends, and acquaintances) in shaping their Population estimates, false consensus patterns, and vaccination intentions. Methods. In a national online flu survey, 351 participants indicated their personal vaccination and flu experiences, assessed the percentage of individuals with those experiences in their social circles and the Population, and reported their vaccination intentions. Results. Participants' Population estimates of vaccination coverage and flu prevalence were associated with their perceptions of their social circles' experiences, independent of their own experiences. Participants reporting less social circle "homophily" (or fewer social contacts sharing their experience) showed less false consensus and even "false uniqueness." Vaccination intentions were greater among nonvaccinators reporting greater social circle vaccine coverage. Discussion. Social circle perceptions play a role in Population estimates and, among individuals who do not vaccinate, vaccination intentions. We discuss implications for the literature on false consensus, false uniqueness, and social norms interventions.

Population Statistics of triatoma sordida stal 1859 hemiptera reduviidae in experimental conditions

Los insectos fueron criados a 28°C ± 3°C y 63 % ± 10% de humedad relativa, y alimentados cada siete dias sobre gallina (Gallus domesticus), durante 40 min. Las cohortes fueron controladas una vez por semana. Se observo un valor constante de supervivencia en las cuatro cohortes, sin picos importantes. La expectativa de vida de los machos, en promedio, fue de 37,4 semanas y la de las hembras 36,8. El tiempo generacional demando 61,7 semanas. La tasa reproductiva neta indica que esta poblacion se incrementara 143,3 veces con cada generacion. La tasa intrinseca de crecimiento natural fue de 0,082 por semana. El maximo valor reproductivo se verifico, en promedio, a la tercer semana del ingreso al estado adulto. La distribucion estable de edades de T. sordida seria de 32% huevos, 26% ninfas de primer estadio, 19% ninfas de segundo estadio, 13% ninfas de tercer estadio, 6% ninfas de cuarto estadio, 3% ninfas de quinto estadio y 1% de adultos. Es la primera cita para Argentina sobre la tabla de vida de T. sordida. El analisis de estos parametros permite considerar que esta especie se comporta como "K estratega", en condiciones experimentales.

Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2011Co-Authors: J M Budzynski, P C HewettAbstract:We present a new determination of the dust content and near-ultraviolet/optical extinction curves associated with a sample of ≃8300 strong, Wλ27960 > 1 A, Mg ii absorbers, redshifts 0.4 1 A and 34 ± 2 per cent for absorbers with W0 > 2 A. Direct determination of the shape of the near-ultraviolet extinction curves, using high signal-to-noise ratio composites, for absorbers as a function of E(B−V), shows evidence for systematic changes in the form of the extinction curves. At low E(B−V) (≲0.05), the extinction curve is featureless and well represented by a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) like extinction curve. For intermediate E(B−V)s (≲0.2), approximately a third of Mg ii absorbers show evidence for a 2175 A feature and an extinction curve similar to that of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For the small number of high E(B−V) (≳0.3) absorbers, the majority of which exhibit strong Ca iiλλ3935,3970 absorption, there is evidence for the presence of a 2175 A feature as strong as that found in the Milky Way (MW). Near-infrared photometry for six of the systems indicates that the rest-frame optical portion of the extinction curve for these high E(B−V), and likely very high column density, systems is significantly greyer than the SMC, LMC or MW extinction curves. Application of the new results on the dust content of strong Mg ii absorbers shows that dusty absorbers can account for a significant proportion, up to a factor of 2, of the observed overdensity of absorbers seen towards gamma-ray burst (GRB) sightlines, compared to sightlines towards quasars in flux-limited samples.
