    In the new design code for Port Facilities in Japan, the depth profile of the derived values is modeled as the profile of the estimated values so as to be either the mean value or the regression line, then the correction factors are multiplied to the estimated value according to the coefficient of variation (if COV > 0.1) and the number of the data entries (if n < 10). The new Port-design code is applied to both the unconfined compression test results and recompression triaxial test results in order to evaluate the undrained shear strengths to emphasize that the latter test has many advantages in design over the former test.

    The Japanese design code for Port Facilities was revised in April 2007, and a performance-based reliability design method was introduced. This rePort introduces a new practical method, which has been adopted in the annex of the design code, to evaluate soil parameters. The new method uses a correction factor corresponding to the coefficient of data variation. In this method, the characteristic value automatically reflects the variation of the derived values in association with the testing method and the reliability of the data interpretation. Compared to the lower limit of 95% confidence interval, which is widely adopted in general design codes such as Eurocode 7 and JGS4001, the characteristic value determined by this method is conservative when the number of data entries is larger than 10. This tendency is caused by the concept, in which characteristic values always reflect the data variation, even though the number of data entries are significantly large. Generally, data variation in the depth profile can be reduced when the depth distribution is appropriately modeled. Also, data variation can be reduced by adopting a more reliable soil test. Accordingly, any efforts to reduce the variation are awarded in this new design code.

    Abstract:

    Water is one of the most precious assets on the planet, being essential for life and used for a wide range of purposes, such as irrigation of crops, power generation, navigation and transPortation of cargo and passengers, among other activities. In the context of cargo handling, Ports in Brazil have increased in imPortance at both national and international levels. In this sense, this work aims to propose a visual analysis of the physical-chemical parameters of the surface water to evaluate the influence of the Port activity on its quality, using visualization techniques such as treemap, parallel coordinates, scatter plot, and histogram. The scenario evaluated corresponds to water around Port Facilities of Belem, Miramar and Vila do Conde, which are managed by Companhia Docas do Para, located in the northern region of Brazil, in the state of Para. The water quality assessment guideline will have as a basis the influence of the cargo with a higher volume of movement, the anthropic actions near the Port, and Brazilian environmental legislation. The results indicate that the Port activity has no relevant impacts on the quality of surface water compared to the launch of domestic sewage without adequate treatment near the Port units and that the excessive rains potentiate this scenario.

  • Amenity Conflicts between Urban Port Facilities and Communities in Australia

    ABSTRACTSelsky and Memon (1997) commented that Ports are part of a zone "where there is considerable pressure from diverse stakeholders" due to technological, economic, political and environmental forces from stakeholders as well as from "the wider context management of urban Ports." They referred to three forms of community conflicts around urban Ports: locational conflicts; failures of corporate social responsibility; and inadequate co-management arrangements. The author analyzed the sources of conflict identified in national surveys of Australian Ports from 1999 to 2010 to evaluate the significance of these matters as possible interferences in what Memon and Selsky describe as the "amenity commons." An analysis of the Australian RePort Cards from 1999-2010 strongly indicates that a direct correlation exists between the economic utility and efficient management of Ports and the resulting impact those processes have on their urban neighborhoods and extended communities. The source of data for this section is the series oi Infrastructure RePort Cards produced by Engineers Australia from 1999 to 2010. The Portals to and transshipment points from Australia's rich natural resources zones are via its Ports. As the Australian economy improved in relationship to the take off period of the Chinese and Indian economies so has the strain on its Ports to handle efficiently the egress of exPorts and ingress of imPorts. Simultaneous with the demands on the Ports for increasing their capacity and efficiency are the natural by-products of commodity/industrial enterprise, pollution of all sorts, congestion, potential for biological contamination and human terrorism and the economic stress of competition for valuable real estate. Selsky and Memon identified these tensions as amenities commons conflicts in 1996-'97. Data from the Australian RePort Cards from 1999-2010 strongly indicates that a direct correlation exists between the economic utility and efficient management of Ports and the resulting impact those processes have on their urban neighborhoods and extended communities.
