Furthermore, it provides a readjustment of traditional concepts and terminology with findings that the role of ro-ro Port Terminals should be considered as decoupling points, poles and postponement platforms. Case studies examine relevant Western European ro-ro Port Terminals for cars and respective links to assembly/factories of vehicles localized in the hinterland and concludes that ro-ro Port Terminals reduce logistical friction and impedance, as well as promote space/time compression.

Drivers explaining the inefficiency of Peruvian and Chilean Ports Terminals

Chang, Beatriz TovarAbstract:We measure technical efficiency of Port Terminals in Peru and Chile to evaluate the influence of certain specific explanatory variables that may contribute to reducing inefficiency; one of them is the structural reform that was implemented in the 1990s in both countries. Chilean Terminals were more efficient than the Peruvian ones mainly due to greater agility in the implementation of the reform process. Furthermore, the higher the containerization index, the greater the occupancy rate and the bigger the bulk rate, then the lower the inefficiency in Terminals is. Also, the inefficiency is lower when the terminal is under private administration.

The Effect of Demand Uncertainty on Port Terminal Costs
Journal of Transport Economics and Policy, 2011Co-Authors: Ana Rodriguez-alvarez, Beatriz Tovar, Alan WallAbstract:A recent survey found that 40 per cent of vessels arrive later than planned, so demand uncertainty is a salient feature of Port terminal activity. Terminals facing greater demand uncertainty and that wish to cater for this will incur extra costs to avoid the risk that shipping companies replace them. We estimate a short-run cost function using data on three Spanish Port Terminals which includes demand uncertainty as a regressor. We find that demand uncertainty has a significant effect on costs and we quantify this. Not taking demand uncertainty into account may lead to Port Terminals' efficiency being underestimated. © 2011 LSE and the University of Bath

We perform a productivity analysis using a cost model that employs a quadratic cost function and discrete data in a multioutput framework for three Terminals in the Port of Las Palmas. We decompose a productivity index into technical change and the effect of the variations in the scale of production. The results show imPortant productivity gains explained mainly by scale effects. © 2010 LSE and the University of Bath

Jara-díaz, Beatriz TovarAbstract:Cargo handling in Ports is a multioutput activity, as freight can arrive in many forms such as containers, bulk, rolling stock, or noncontainerized general cargo. In this paper Tovar, Jara-D�, and Trujillo analyze the operation of Port Terminals through the estimation of a multioutput cost model that uses monthly data on three firms located at the Las Palmas Port in Spain. This permits the calculation of product-specific marginal costs, economies of scale (general and by firm), and economies of scope, which are key tools to help the regulators in their task.
