Growth of the blue swimmer crab, Portunus pelagicus(Linnaeus, 1758) (Decapoda, Brachyura) in captivity
Crustaceana, 2005Co-Authors: Jose Josileen, N. G. MenonAbstract:[The growth of hatchery produced Portunus pelagicus crabs was monitored under laboratory conditions by recording growth at each moult from the 1st crab instar onwards. Male and female crabs attained sexual maturity by their 12th and 14th moult, respectively. The experiment lasted for 455 days when the last crab died. This paper describes the growth of male and female crabs in each moulting stage, with details of their carapace width and length, chelar length and height, abdominal width and length, and total weight. Moulting frequency, secondary sexual characteristics, and moult increments were also monitored. VBGF (Von Bertalanffy Growth Formula) fit was obtained using the methods of Gulland & Holt (1959), Fabens (1965), and Munro (1982). The L∞ values calculated by the different methods ranged between 204.1 and 219.8 mm in males, and between 188.6 and 211.8 mm in females. LARVAL STAGES OF THE BLUE SWIMMER CRAB, Portunus pelagicus (LINNAEUS, 1758) (DECAPODA, BRACHYURA)
Crustaceana, 2004Co-Authors: Menon, Jose JosileenAbstract:Larvae of Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus, 1758) were reared in the laboratory on hatching from wild ovigerous females collected from Palk Bay, southeast India. The larval stages included four zoeal stages and one megalopa. The megalopa moulted to the first crab instar. The zoeae and megalopa were very similar to those of other portunids. The duration of each of the first two zoeal stages was 3-4 days, the following two stages 2-3 days, and the megalopa 3-5 days, reaching the first crab stage in 15-17 days. All zoeal and megalopal stages are described in detail and are documented with illustrations.

Larval rearing of the crab Portunus pelagicus(Crustacea, Portunidae) in hatchery at MandapamRegional Centre of CMFRI
1996Co-Authors: Jose Josileen, M R Arputharaj, A Ramakrishnan, A ViramaniAbstract:The hatchery production of Portunus pelagicus has not been undertaken in our country. So work was taken up to standardise and popularise a technology for the hatchery production of seed of P. pelagicus with a view to overcome the nonavailability of crab juveniles for farming and also to replenish the depleting stock of the wild by sea-ranching (by releasing the laboratory reared young ones into the sea) which would help a sustainable fishery of crab in the region.

High genetic variation of Portunus pelagicus from Makassar Straits revealed by RAPD markers and mitochondrial 16S rRNA sequences
African Journal of Biotechnology, 2016Co-Authors: Yushinta Fujaya, Andi Aliah Hidayani, Andi Ivo Asphama, Andi Parenrengi, Andi TenriuloAbstract:The blue swimmer crab, Portunus pelagicus , is presently managed as a single stock. In this study, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers and 16S rRNA sequences were used to understand the genetic diversity and parentage of P. pelagicus from Makassar Strait. A total of 150 samples were collected from the sea, grouped by gender and morphological features. DNA genome was performed at approximately 23130 base pairs (bp) and mitochondrial 16S rRNA sequences in the 500 to 600 bp. The percentage of polymorphic band using OPA-5, OPA-11, and OPA-17 primers was high (44.4 to 100%). Genetic identity ranged between 0.7266 and 0.9050 and genetic distance between 0.1008 and 0.3214. Alignment of 16S rRNA sequences shows 96 to 99% homology with P. pelagicus available in GenBank. Both RAPD markers and 16S rRNA sequences indicate that there was a high genetic variation observed among population, which formed two clusters. Specific unique bands found at 450 and 600 bp in OPA-11 gives an indication of hybridization among the population. The variation of white spot pattern on the carapace can be used as indicators of differentiation in population and parentage of P. pelagicus . Therefore, farmers or hatchery operators can continue to use the population as sources of natural broodstock. acceleration of blue swimming crab Portunus pelagicus larval development by phytoecdysteroid
Aquacultura Indonesiana, 2015Co-Authors: Fakhirah Ahmad, Dody Dharmawan Trijuno, Yushinta Fujaya, Siti AslamyahAbstract:Phytoecdysteroid is a mimic hormone like molt regulating hormone in arthropoda and crustacea. This research aims to investigate the response of Portunus pelagicus larvae on various doses of vitomolt enrichment in predigested artificial diet. Four doses of vitomolt (0; 4; 40; 400 mg/100 g artificial diet) were used in this research. Larval development and survival rate were measured The results showed that the larvae development rate was increased in congruent with the dose of vitomolt. However, highest survival rate was found on 4 mg vitomolt/100 g artificial diet (P>0.05). Based on regression analysis, it is estimated the optimal dose of vitomolt for larval development rate and survival rate was about 23 mg/100 g of artificial diet. Vitomolt application in artificial diet could be used to accelerate the larval development rate in blue swimming crab. Quality of Blue swimming crab Portunus pelagicus Larvae from Domesticated Broodstock
Aquacultura Indonesiana, 2015Co-Authors: Dody Dharmawan Trijuno, Yushinta Fujaya, Agviranti Agviranti, Syamsurya MarhamaAbstract:Blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) is the important world fishery resource, but the crab larval rearing faces high mortality problem. The aim of the research was to compare survival and growth rate of larvae resulted from wild and domesticated broodstock blue swimming crab. Domesticated and wild broodstock were used to produce larvae. Domesticated broodstock was selected from repeated reared crab until third generation. Selection of the broodstock mainly based on the survival and growth rate. The wild broodstock was collected from Makassar Strait Sea. Larvae from the two sources of broodstock were reared in the conical tanks with density of 50 zoeas per liter. After reaching megalopa phase, then, the larvae were transfered into concrete tank completed with shelter and it were reared until crab phase. Crab phase was reared for 18 days, then these seed were released into the brackishwater pond for further domestication step. Larva from zoea to crab were fed with rotifer, artemia, fresh small shrimp and diet. The result showed that domesticated broodstock produced higher survival rate (P

The Morphometric Character and Mitochondrial 16S rRNA Sequence of Portunus pelagicus
Aquacultura Indonesiana, 2015Co-Authors: Yushinta Fujaya, Dody Dharmawan Trijuno, Andi Aliah Hidayani, Andi Ivo Asphama, Andi Tenriulo, Andi ParenrengiAbstract:Blue swimming crab ( Portunus pelagicus ) colors have variations from different habitats and they have different vitality. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diversity of the P. pelagicus using morphometric and 16SrRNA mitochondrial sequence. There were three groups of blue swimming crab characterized by differences in color and density patterns of spots. The result of Canonical discriminant analysis showed that there were morphometric differences among the three groups. The main distinguishing morphometric characteristics are the ratio of carapace width and length as well as the ratio of the length and width of cheliped merus. The third group of crab is also has similarity about 98-99% by the Portunus pelagicus 16S rRNA sequences available in gene banks. These studies had concluded that differences in color and pattern of the spot density have also morphometric and genetic differences. At least there were two groups based on genetic variation of Portunus pelagicus from Barru Regency waters which may have a variety of different properties. Further research is needed to study the adaptation abilities of the two groups of crab on the condition of aquaculture as a potential domestic animal. Keywords : Crab; Portunus pelagicus; Morphometric; 16S rRNA.

Study on larval development of Portunus pelagicus
Journal of Oceanography in Taiwan Strait, 2001Co-Authors: Liao YongAbstract:The present paper presents the results of the larval development of Portunus pelagicus reared in the laboratory. Five zoeal stages and one megalop a stage were observed before the larva develops into the first stage of junior crab. The larva hatches as a zoea-larva. It moults six times after breaking the eggmembrane to accomplish the larval phase of the metamorphosis. The number of hairs or spines on the maxillale, maxilla and maxillipeds increase with the development of each larval stage and may serve to distinguish the different developmental stages of the zoea. The whole process of larval development require 14~15d at temperature 27.4~28.2℃.

The bioaccumulation of cadmium by the Blue Swimmer Crab Portunus pelagicus L.
The Science of the total environment, 2001Co-Authors: R Mcpherson, K BrownAbstract:The Blue Swimmer Crab (Portunus pelagicus) accumulates only cadmium in the hepatopancreas after being presented elevated levels of the metals Cd, Cu, Zn, As, Fe and Al via a food source, the mussel Trychomya hirsuta. Over 8 weeks, crabs were fed a controlled diet to determine the accumulation of metals. Significant (P = 0.05) Cd accumulation was detected after 4 weeks of feeding. Food mussels were sourced from either 'contaminated' or 'uncontaminated' sites. Mussels from uncontaminated sites had an average Cd level of 0.07 microg/g wet weight and contaminated mussels had an average of 5.2 microg/g wet weight. The usefulness of presenting metals in this way to assess potential bioaccumulators is further considered against other presentation methods.
