  • how far did we get how far to go a european survey on Postgraduate Courses in evidence based medicine
Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice, 2009
Co-Authors: Regina Kunz, Eva Nagy, Sjors F P J Coppus, Jose I Emparanza, Julie Hadley, Regina Kulier, Susanne Weinbrenner, Theodoros N Arvanitis, Amanda Burls
    Abstract:

Background: Over the past decade, evidence-based medicine (EBM) has gained recognition as a means to improve the quality of health care provision. However, little is known about learning opportunities to acquire EBM-associated skills. The EUebm-Unity partnership explored current educational activities for EBM practice for doctors across Europe. Methods: We surveyed organizations offering Postgraduate EBM Courses across Europe inquiring about their course programme, teaching content and strategies, and interest in a Europe-wide curriculum in EBM. Results: One hundred and fifty-six organizers in eight European countries reported 403 Courses that had started first-time from 1996 to 2006. Despite a steady increase, in absolute terms, the frequency of Courses was low and varied from 1 first-time offering of a course per 640 doctors (Spain) to 1 first-time offering per 5600 doctors (Austria) over 10 years. Most adopted the McMaster EBM teaching concept of small group, problem-based learning focussing on interventions, diagnostic tests and guidelines, and included efforts to link EBM to patient care. Teaching staff consisted of doctors from academic and non-academic settings, supported by methodologists. Efforts to formally integrate EBM in Postgraduate activities were only partially successful. Most organizations welcomed a standardized European qualification in EBM. A limitation of the survey is the lack of follow-up information about the continuation of Courses following the first-time offering. Conclusions: All countries offer some EBM Courses with varying teaching intensity. Learning opportunities are insufficient to ensure widespread dissemination of knowledge and skills. Most countries welcome more efforts to develop inexpensive and feasible educational activities at a Postgraduate level.

  • burns education the emerging role of simulation for training healthcare professionals
    Burns, 2017
Co-Authors: Hazim Sadideen, Ioannis Goutos, Roger Kneebone
    Abstract:

Burns education appears to be under-represented in UK undergraduate curricula. However current Postgraduate Courses in burns education provide formal training in resuscitation and management. Simulation has proven to be a powerful modality to advance surgical training in both technical and non-technical skills. We present a literature review that summarises the format of current burns education, and provides detailed insight into historic, current and novel advances in burns simulation for both technical and non-technical skills, that can be used to augment surgical training. Addressing the economic and practical limitations of current immersive surgical simulation is important, and this review proposes future directions for integration of innovative simulation strategies into training curricula.

  • developing australia s highway safety professionals what can the united states learn
    Transportation Research Record, 2016
    Co-Authors: John W Shaw, Carlyn Muir, I W Johnston, David A Noyce
    Abstract:

Highway safety is a complex issue that requires the combined skills of many different types of professionals, including engineers, public administrators, first responders, and public health officials. Although the United States and Australia are culturally similar countries with high levels of motor vehicle use, for historical reasons Australia has typically reached road safety milestones earlier than the United States has. Although a few American universities offer classes on road safety, current U.S. offerings predominantly consist of professional development short Courses (often with a programmatic focus). In addition to professional development Courses, some undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses in Australian universities offer electives on the principles of road safety engineering and methods for influencing road user behavior. This coursework can be viewed as part of a wider effort to implement scientifically validated methods and the safe system approach recommended by the International Transport ...

    Co-Authors: Jonine Jancey, Sharyn Burns
    Abstract:

Purpose – Few studies have evaluated the satisfaction of mature‐aged Postgraduate students. The purpose of this paper is to determine Postgraduate coursework students' service expectations in regard to academic course quality, university services and industry links.Design/methodology/approach – A case study of 51 taught Postgraduate students enrolled in the School of Public Health nested Postgraduate Courses was conducted. Students completed an online self‐complete survey (response rate of 58 per cent). Descriptive statistics and univariate analysis (chi‐square) were used to explore associations between variables.Findings – Postgraduate taught students come from a variety of career backgrounds. They place a great deal of importance on their educational experience, especially in regard to academic factors: reputable degree; skilled engaging teachers; access to online resources; ready contact with academics; and supportive enrolment processes.Practical implications – A greater awareness of student expectati...

  • on course portal a tool for in service training and career development for biomedical scientists
    Drug Discovery Today, 2013
Co-Authors: Antony Payton, Christa Janko, Oliver Renn, Michael Hardman
    Abstract:

Successfully navigating through the jungle of biomedical Postgraduate Courses in Europe has recently been made possible by the release of an Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) funded project called on-course ® ( http://www.on-course.eu ). on-course ® lists all master, continued professional development (CPD) and PhD Courses in Europe and hosts advanced search options designed by the pharmaceutical industry, academia and regulatory bodies allowing the course seeker to find Courses that are most relevant for them. In addition, an IMI cross education and training topic task force has developed a set of quality standards that have been applied to CPD Courses. The comprehensive nature of on-course ® offers a new level of transparency to biomedical course provision in Europe that will help steer future education and training.
