However, the shunted Pouches in transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas have not been well-documented. Our aim was to evaluate the angioarchitecture of transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas, including the frequency and location of shunted Pouches and their feeding arteries. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-five consecutive cases of TSS-DAVFs that underwent rotational angiography and transvenous embolization between 2008 and 2011 were reviewed. Multiplanar reformatted images of rotational angiography and selective angiography were reviewed with a particular focus on the shunted Pouches. RESULTS: All 25 cases showed SPs, with numbers ranging from 1 to 4 Pouches (mean, 2.35). The SPs were located at the transverse-sigmoid junction in 16, close to the vein of Labbe in 9, at the dorsal-to-sigmoid sinus in 9, inferior to the sigmoid sinus in 6, at the sigmoid-jugular junction in 5, and inferior to the transverse sinus or the sinus confluence in 14. The SP at the sigmoid sinus was frequently fed by the jugular branch of the ascending pharyngeal artery and the stylomastoid artery. The SP at the transverse-sigmoid junction and the vein of Labbe was fed by the petrosal/petrosquamous and posterior branches of the middle meningeal artery and the transosseous branches of the occipital artery. The SP inferior to the transverse sinus and the sinus confluence was fed by the transosseous branches of the occipital artery and the posterior meningeal artery. All cases were successfully treated by transvenous embolization with sinus packing ( n = 13) or selective embolization of the SP ( n = 12). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of SP is a common angioarchitecture of TSS-DAVFs. Identification of the SPs would be useful for their treatment.

effects of transportation hazards on barrier properties of gas flushed retort Pouches

GerardAbstract:Clear high-barrier retort Pouches were filled with water and gas flushed with nitrogen. Headspace volumes utilized for this study were 200 and 400 cm3. Retort Pouches were fitted with an OxyDot® as a non-invasive measurement technique to monitor percent package headspace oxygen. The retort Pouches were packaged inside regular slotted containers and subjected to laboratory simulated transportation performance tests for small parcel and unit load delivery systems. To evaluate the effects of the simulated transport tests, control retort Pouches of each variable were used for comparison. Headspace oxygen levels were measured for all retort Pouches (test and control) for 63 days. Results indicated that there were significant differences in all variables when comparing the simulated transport samples to the control samples. Comparing headspace volumes, the 400 cm3 Pouches yielded less oxygen ingress into the pouch as compared with the 200 cm3 Pouches in the small parcel simulation (p < 0.05). There were not significant differences for the two headspace volumes in the unit load simulation. Results from this study indicate packaged products being distributed through small parcel supply chains, which are handled more vigorously than those being shipped palletized, the increased headspace volume protected against oxygen ingress for certain distribution channels.

Four different retort pouch structures were used: Cast polypropylene (CPP); polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/silicon oxide-coated nylon/CPP (SIOX); Aluminum oxide-coated PET/nylon/CPP (ALOX); PET/aluminum foil/CPP (FOIL). To determine the amount of lipid oxidation in the salmon, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) was measured. Salmon packaged in SIOX Pouches had higher TBARS value, 43.53 mili-extinction/g, than salmon packaged in FOIL Pouches, 37.06 mili-extinction/g, after 8 weeks of storage. A multiple comparisons test was used to evaluate the sensory characteristics of the salmon. Salmon packaged in SIOX Pouches had less acceptability, 4.11, than salmon packaged in FOIL Pouches, 5.44, after week 8. Conversely, salmon packaged in ALOX Pouches had similar sensory and TBARS value with salmon packaged in FOIL Pouches. The barrier properties of each pouch material were also investigated. Oxygen permeability (OP, g μm/m 2 day kPa) of SIOX increased from 0.88 to 10.55 after retort processing. SIOX had an OP of 10.94 at week 8 while ALOX and FOIL had 0.51 and 0.47 of OP, respectively. Overall, shelf stable salmon packaged in ALOX had a shelf life comparable to salmon packaged in a traditional FOIL pouch material, while salmon packaged in SIOX had a significantly lower shelf life then either ALOX or FOIL.

Pouchitis occurs mainly in patients with a background of ulcerative colitis, although the reasons for this are unknown. The aim of this study was to characterize differences in pouch bacterial populations between ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous Pouches. METHODS: After ethical approval was obtained, fresh stool samples were collected from patients with ulcerative colitis Pouches (n = 10), familial adenomatous polyposis (n = 7) Pouches, and ulcerative colitis ileostomies (n = 8). Quantitative measurements of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were performed. RESULTS: Sulfate-reducing bacteria were isolated from 80 percent (n = 8) of ulcerative colitis Pouches. Sulfate-reducing bacteria were absent from familial adenomatous polyposis Pouches and also from ulcerative colitis ileostomy effluent. Pouch Lactobacilli, Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides sp, and Clostridium perfringens counts were increased relative to ileostomy counts in patients with ulcerative colitis. Total pouch enterococci and coliform counts were also increased relative to ileostomy levels. There were no significant quantitative or qualitative differences between pouch types when these bacteria were evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: Sulfate-reducing bacteria are exclusive to patients with a background of ulcerative colitis. Not all ulcerative colitis Pouches harbor sulfate-reducing bacteria because two ulcerative colitis Pouches in this study were free of the latter. They are not present in familial adenomatous polyposis Pouches or in ileostomy effluent collected from patients with ulcerative colitis. Total bacterial counts increase in ulcerative colitis Pouches after stoma closure. Levels of Lactobacilli, Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides sp, Clostridium perfringens, enterococci, and coliforms were similar in both pouch groups. Because sulfate-reducing bacteria are specific to ulcerative colitis Pouches, they may play a role in the pathogenesis of pouchitis.

International Journal of Food and Fermentation Technology, 2015Co-Authors: Kyle Dunno, Ron Thomas, William S Whiteside, Kay CookseyAbstract:Institutional retort Pouches containing either water or 5% starch solution were filled with varying amounts of headspace volume to determine if adding gaseous volume to the package can help it survive laboratory simulated engineering tests. Fixed displacement vibration testing and compression testing of the Pouches yielded no differences in the amount of headspace volume. Significant differences were noted as a result of the shock testing (free fall drop method) when comparing the water filled Pouches, but no headspace volume effect was observed for the 5% starch solution Pouches. The results from this study showed increasing the headspace volume of a retort pouch does provide increased protection to transport hazards (shock) for a low viscosity food simulant as compared with a highly viscous product packaged similarly.
