exploring emPowerment cross cultural differences along the Power Distance Dimension
International Journal of Intercultural Relations, 1999Co-Authors: Dafna Eylon, Kevin AuAbstract:Abstract This exploratory study investigates emPowerment in a cultural context. One hundred and thirty-five MBAs participated in a management simulation. Results suggest differences based on participants’ cultural background. Specifically, as a result of the emPowerment process participants from both high and low Power Distance cultures were more satisfied with their job in the emPowered condition and less satisfied in the disemPowered condition. Individuals from high Power Distance cultures did not perform as well when emPowered as when disemPowered. Participants from low Power Distance cultures performed similarly, regardless of the emPowerment process. Implications of these findings for emPowerment programs and future research are discussed.

Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology (JAMT), 2018Co-Authors: M.s. Syed Mohamed, Adi Saptari, M Nor I MaarofAbstract:Industrial practices are moving towards an environmentally sustainable manufacturing philosophy. Depending on local environmental requirements companies have adopted practices with different priorities and different intensity. A survey was conducted with the aims to identify the awareness level of sustainable manufacturing practices and to analyze problems faced in implementing sustainable manufacturing from the perspective of Hofstede’s cultural model. A small and medium automotive company in Malaysia, XYZ Automotive was chosen to be the focus of this study. Survey has been used to collect the data via questionnaire, interview and observation. Commitment from employees and top management is crucial for sustainable manufacturing success as explained by Hofstede’s collectivism and Power Distance Dimension. Collectivism and high Power Distance Dimensions work hand in hand in determining the success of sustainable manufacturing practices in XYZ Automotive.
