    Abstract:

    European brackish water seas (Baltic Sea, Black Sea and Sea of Azov, Caspian Sea) are subject to intense invasion of non-indigenous species (NIS). In these seas, salinity is the most important range limiting factor and native species seem to reach a minimum species richness at intermediate salinities. This trend, revealed by Remane in 1934 and later on confirmed by many other scientists, was compared to the salinity range of already established NIS in the European brackish water seas. It turned out that most NIS are well adapted to the salinities holding lowest native species richness, already in their native area, and that NIS richness maximum in brackish water seas occurs in the salinity intervals of native species richness minimum. A Predictable Pattern in the salinity range of NIS can be used as a tool in initial risk assessment of future invasions in brackish water seas, especially when mapping highly potential donor and recipient areas. A product of empty niches, suitable environmental conditions, and availability of proper vectors might be the most effective predictor for the invasibility of brackish water areas.

    A Predictable Pattern of stock market return is the violation of the efficient market hypothesis (EMH). It is well studied and evident in financial literature that stock markets around the world have Predictable Patterns, e.g. calendar effect, behavioural effect, and Religious festival effect. By analysing market return and trading volume data of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) over the period of 1 January 2002 to 30 August 2018, this study attempts to investigate the association of Ramadan, the holy month for the Muslims, with the market return, volatility and trade volume in the of DSE. Applying GJR-GARCH (p,q) model on the market return of DSE, this study concludes that Ramadan month has no significant relationship with stock market return and volatility. However, Ramadan has a significant negative impact on the daily trade volume of DSE. This is might be the outcome of decreased trading and banking hour and religious perception of investors

    Summary • Long-distance virus transport takes place through the vascular system and is dependent on the movement of photoassimilates. Here, Patterns of symptom development, virus movement and gene expression were analysed in Arabidopsis following inoculation with Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) on a single leaf. • Virus accumulation and expression of markers for the salicylic acid (SA) and ethylene/jasmonate (Et/JA) defence pathways, PR-1 and PDF1.2, were analysed on a leaf-by-leaf basis by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). • Virus spread followed a strictly defined Pattern identical to that of a source–sink relationship. This was exploited to study differences between local and systemic defence responses in a developmental and spatial manner. In infected plants, PR-1 transcripts accumulated primarily but not exclusively in leaves with a direct vascular connection to the inoculated leaf. Abundances fell significantly as virus accumulated. By contrast, PDF1.2 transcripts were significantly lower than in controls in all leaves at early stages of infection, but recovered as virus accumulated. • Virus and PR-1 transcript abundances are negatively correlated, and SA- and Et/JA-mediated signalling of gene expression occurs independently of the presence of virus. Although SA-dependent signalling responses were mainly linked to the orthostichy, Et/JA-dependent responses were independent of vascular connections.

    Tropical sea cucumber fisheries follow a Predictable Pattern of serial depletion. Overfishing is exacerbated in developing countries where management systems lack capacity to control large numbers of fishers influenced by poverty. In contrast, the tropical sea cucumber fishery in Australia's World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) is operating in a developed high-income country with relatively few licensed fishers to manage. The development of this fishery is reviewed here in a meta-analysis of catches from 1991 to 2011. The fishery expanded to replace high-value teatfish species (Holothuria whitmaei and H. fuscogilva), fished heavily in initial stages of the fishery, with newly commercialized medium-value species such as burying blackfish (Actinopyga spinea) and curryfish (Stichopus herrmanni). These two species now constitute 80% of total catch. The annual average catch of burying blackfish was 208 tonnes years 2004–11 and curryfish catches increased rapidly at an average annual pace of 200% from 2007–11. This serial harvest Pattern occurred in the absence of baseline studies and without independent resource assessments, information required to inform relevant harvest predictions and to determine fishery impacts. This situation does not support ecologically relevant and adaptive decision-making in management and the unfolding catch Patterns in the GBRMP follow those in low-income developing countries. The missing knowledge and lack of data serve as arguments to support precautionary reductions in harvests and extending fallow periods in fishing zones.
