Gravity and Extreme Magnetism SMEX
2019Co-Authors: NasaAbstract:The Gravity and Extreme Magnetism SMEX mission will be the first mission to catalogue the X-ray polarisation of many astrophysical objects including black-holes and pulsars. This first of its kind mission is enabled by the novel use of a time projection chamber as an X-ray polarimeter. The detector has been developed over the last 5 years, with the current effort charged toward a demonstration of it's technical readiness to be at level 6 prior to the Preliminary Design Review. This talk will describe the Design GEMS polarimeter and the results to date from the engineering test unit.

Advanced life support study. Modification 10: ECLSS logistical support analysis for Space Station Freedom

This report describes the work that was performed by SRS Technologies from Jan. 1992 - Jan. 1993. The work that was performed included the following: (1) a study of the Space Station Freedom (SSF) Preliminary Design Review (PDR) data package and an identification of the maintenance concept, structure, implementation plans, training plan, and the LSAR approach; development of a working ability with the ALSTAR and DATA Express software; (3) a Review of the SSF maintenance concept; and (4) an update of the ALSTAR data base.

A bootstrap lunar base: Preliminary Design Review 2
2013Co-Authors: NasaAbstract:A bootstrap lunar base is the gateway to manned solar system exploration and requires new ideas and new Designs on the cutting edge of technology. A Preliminary Design for a Bootstrap Lunar Base, the second provided by this contractor, is presented. An overview of the work completed is discussed as well as the technical, management, and cost strategies to complete the program requirements. The lunar base Design stresses the transforming capabilities of its lander vehicles to aid in base construction. The Design also emphasizes modularity and expandability in the base configuration to support the long-term goals of scientific research and profitable lunar resource exploitation. To successfully construct, develop, and inhabit a permanent lunar base, however, several technological advancements must first be realized. Some of these technological advancements are also discussed.

1995Co-Authors: R.d. StreitAbstract:During late April, we modified the budget and work plan for FY95 to reflect a $2000K funding reduction for this fiscal year. These changes incorporate both the delayed start and slow ramp-up due to DOE funding uncertainties, as well as new and real reductions in Project activities. Due to the significant budgeting impact, this report reflects the resulting budget changes (for April). Scope and schedule impact, however, will be documented in the May report due to the additional effort involved in assessing schedule impact. We will combine the May Monthly Report and the Revised FY95 Plan for cost efficiency; we will submit the FY95 Plan Rebaseline for approval by DOE in May. Technical progress continued during April, but was redirected toward the new FY95 Plan. Key changes in the revised plan are to delete MEO from Project scope and wrap up work to date, defer further major procurements for the Project from FY95, delete MSO staff additions (with milestones), and defer work and milestones in other WBS elements. Engineering development, Preliminary Design, and peer Reviews continued in preparation for the Project Preliminary Design Review. The budget reduction is executed to delay the Project Preliminary Design Review until Ql of FY96.

HartmanAbstract:TPX Insulation & Impregnation R&D test results are reported for 1x2 samples Designed for screening candidate conduit insulation systems for TPX PF and TF coils. The epoxy/glass insulation system and three proposed alternate insulation systems employing Kapton, was evaluated in as received sample condition and after 10 thermal cycles in liquid nitrogen. Two DGBA impregnation systems, Shell 826 and CTD101K were investigated. Square incoloy 908 and 316 LN stainless hollow conduits were used for 1x2 sample fabrication. Capacitance, dielectric loss, and insulation resistance dielectric characteristics were measured for all samples. Partial discharge performance was measured for samples either in air, under silicon oil, or under liquid nitrogen up to 10kVrms at 60 Hz. Hipot screening was performed at 10 kVdc. The samples were cross sectioned and evaluated for impregnation quality. The implications of the test results on the TPX Preliminary Design decision are discussed.

Space Station Freedom capabilities for users

WillenbergAbstract:Space Station Freedom's major objectives are to prepare for human space exploration by providing a long-duration, continuously habitable spacecraft in low earth orbit for physiology studies and for development of systems to support human presence in space and to enable laboratory and observational research in space. As a result of restructuring and the Preliminary Design Review, Designs of Space Station Freedom architecture and systems have progressed to the point where the accommodations for users can be well described. These capabilities are enumerated, covering such important resources as power and cooling, rack volume and external accommodations, crew time, data and command rates, and acceleration environment. Related items such as total energy, data management systems, and interfaces, station attitude, payload transportation, and on board and ground facilities are considered.
