    Abstract:

    This chapter examines the aspects of hardware planning, platform deployment options, Windows Server 2003 installation planning, and an introduction to Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 farm design and planning. It begins with a description of hardware planning with a detailed discussion of horizontal vs. vertical scaling. The chapter takes a look at the traditional bottlenecks that terminal Servers face to allow better understanding of when and how to scale up or out. Following this, the chapter presents a discussion on building redundancies into Server hardware. It also reviews the architect-level concepts of platform deployment. There are five different methods or approaches to platform deployment—manual installation, unattended or scripted installations, Server cloning, Server provisioning, and finally, the hybrid approach. The challenging concept of software compatibility and the process and importance of conducting a software inventory are also explored. Finally, the basic concepts of farm design for Presentation Server are reviewed. Installation planning requires an architect-level view of all the components of the environment that will be impacted, not just the selection of the correct Server hardware from which to host Presentation Server-based applications.

    This chapter provides information to perform the basics of creating a new or migrating to a MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 farm. Depending on the environment, the process could be more or less complex. Each environment is unique and has its own unique issues. Proper preparation and planning can help to avoid many of the common problems that arise, but others require research and trial and error before they are resolved. It is important to remember, that practice makes perfect, and that goes for Server builds as well.

    MetaFrame Presentation Server (MPS) 3.0 is a technology platform that runs on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Servers with Terminal Services enabled. Microsoft and Citrix have co-developed much of the underlying technology that allows multiuser remote access to occur on Windows Servers. For some administrators, Terminal Services alone provide enough functionality for their environment. For more demanding installations, Citrix adds value with their MPS 3.0 product. MPS 3.0 addresses gaps that exist in Terminal Services. These gaps deal primarily with load balancing, client access methods, and application availability. Citrix expands on the very limited options Microsoft gives in these areas to provide a more seamless experience for both users and administrators. Beyond the gaps it fills, Citrix also provides some additional features that Terminal Services lacks. Depending on the version of MPS 3.0 installed, Citrix can provide everything from role management to advanced reporting and application packaging. By choosing the feature set, one can add value to the Terminal Services environment without breaking the bank on Citrix.

    The first step in securing any computing environment is developing a comprehensive security strategy. Although Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server provides some built-in capabilities, it might not cover every aspect of the requirements. To resolve this dilemma, some common third-party solutions can be used. The most common solution is virus protection, which is used to protect against malicious computer code. This software monitors for unauthorized probing or use of the computing resources. Firewall software is another key component of security strategy; it provides the gateway to other networks. To protect an internal network, a firewall is generally placed between secured resources and public networks such as the Internet. One of the primary security mechanisms employed by Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server is encryption technology. Based on industry-standard mathematical algorithms, encryption is used to scramble data as it is transmitted across the network to prevent unauthorized users from accessing it. Using several different technologies, including symmetric keys, asymmetric keys, and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server works to completely secure the entire Server farm. Various tools are provided to configure encryption, such as the Management Console for MetaFrame Presentation Server, the Citrix Connection Configuration tool, and the SSL Relay Server Configuration tool. Using the Management Console for MetaFrame Presentation Server can be used for the provided default load evaluators or create custom evaluators. A predefined formula can monitor exact usage through the Server farm via command-line utilities.
