    Abstract:

    In this study, we examine how to motivate computer users to protect themselves from potential security and Privacy threats. We draw on the Information Processing framework which posits that threat mitigation commonly occurs before full cognitive threat assessment and we conduct an empirical study to evaluate the effects of an exposure to general information security threats on the strength of passwords and the disclosure of personal information. Through an online experiment, we compare immediate computer user reactions to potential non-individually specific security and Privacy threats in an extra-organizational context. We find evidence consistent with automatic security and Privacy protective actions in response to these threats. Computer users exposed to news stories about corporate security Breaches limit the disclosure of sensitive personal information and choose stronger passwords. The study complements the existing behavior modification research in information security by providing the theoretical and empirical foundation for the exploration of automatic security and Privacy threat mitigation strategies across different contexts. We explore factors that affect perceptions of Privacy Breach among mobile app users.We evaluate how the type of information and legal contracts affect perceptions of a Privacy Breach.We develop and operationalize a new construct: perceived Privacy Breach.We find that not all Privacy Breaches are alike.Legal contracts only partially reduce perceptions of a Privacy Breach.

    Abstract:

    We explore factors that affect perceptions of Privacy Breach among mobile app users.We evaluate how the type of information and legal contracts affect perceptions of a Privacy Breach.We develop and operationalize a new construct: perceived Privacy Breach.We find that not all Privacy Breaches are alike.Legal contracts only partially reduce perceptions of a Privacy Breach. This study examines four factors affecting perceptions of Privacy Breach among smartphone application users. The four factors drawn from psychological contract theory are: the type of information perceived to be misappropriated by the application, the presence of a legal agreement giving application developers rights to use the information, the source of information suggesting that a Privacy Breach may have occurred and the application type (free or paid). An experimental examination of these factors indicates that perceptions of misappropriation of financial information are more distressing than perceived misappropriation of geo-location data. In addition, the existence of legal contracts giving application developers rights to information only partially attenuates perceptions of Privacy Breach among application users. This study offers a novel theoretical perspective toward understanding perceptions of Privacy Breaches and it shows that Privacy Breach perceptions vary according to the characteristics of the Breach. At the methodological level, this study offers a new focal construct to measure perceived Privacy Breach. At a practical level, the empirical results highlight the limitations of legal contracts in preventing perceptions of Privacy Breach.

However practice suggests that Privacy is a major concern which affects users' willingness to share personal information on social networking sites. To understand how Privacy expectancies affect sustainability we draw on the psychological contract theory. We develop a framework which posits that Privacy-related expectancies are inherent to disclosure of private information. Perceptions of a Privacy Breach trigger the affective experience of a psychological contract violation and undermine trust, which consequently undermine the sustainability of continued information disclosure. We evaluate the framework by surveying 638 Facebook users. We find that SNS users' perceptions of Privacy Breach attributed to the SNS provider may cause irreparable harm. The experience of psychological contract violations and loss of trust motivate users to reduce information sharing and consider disengaging from the SNS completely.

    Abstract:

    The fast growing adoption of smartphones has accentuated the importance of Privacy in the context of mobile computing. While most research has focused on general Privacy concerns and their impact on intentions to disclose personal information, little is known about how perceptions of a Privacy Breach affect ongoing relationships between users and mobile providers. To address this gap, we develop a research framework grounded in psychological contract theory. We test this framework with a survey-based study of smartphone users who are presented with a scenario of a Privacy Breach. We find that perceptions of Privacy Breach negatively affect trust and commitment and lead to an increase in cynicism. In turn, trust, commitment, and cynicism are highly predictive of smartphone user intention to terminate the relationship with the mobile carrier. We also evaluate the effects of perceived availability of alternatives and contractual lock-in. The nomological framework developed in the current study provides the foundation for further investigation of perceived Privacy Breach across practically relevant contexts.

  • Safe disassociation of set-valued datasets

    Abstract:

    Disassociation is a bucketization based anonymization technique that divides a set-valued dataset into several clusters to hide the link between individuals and their complete set of items. It increases the utility of the anonymized dataset, but on the other side, it raises many Privacy concerns, one in particular, is when the items are tightly coupled to form what is called, a cover problem. In this paper, we present safe disassociation, a technique that relies on partial suppression, to overcome the aforementioned Privacy Breach encountered when disassociating set-valued datasets. Safe disassociation allows the k ^ m -anonymity Privacy constraint to be extended to a bucketized dataset and copes with the cover problem. We describe our algorithm that achieves the safe disassociation and we provide a set of experiments to demonstrate its efficiency.

    Data anonymization is gaining much attention these days as it provides the fundamental requirements to safely outsource datasets containing identifying information. While some techniques add noise to protect Privacy others use generalization to hide the link between sensitive and non-sensitive information or separate the dataset into clusters to gain more utility. In the latter, often referred to as bucketization, data values are kept intact, only the link is hidden to maximize the utility. In this paper, we showcase the limits of disassociation, a bucketization technique that divides a set-valued dataset into $k^m$-anonymous clusters. We demonstrate that a Privacy Breach might occur if the disassociated dataset is subject to a cover problem. We finally evaluate the Privacy Breach using the quantitative Privacy Breach detection algorithm on real disassociated datasets.

    Abstract:

    In this paper, we study the Privacy Breach caused by unsafe correlations in transactional data where individuals have multiple tuples in a dataset. We provide two safety constraints to guarantee safe correlation of the data: 1 the safe grouping constraint to ensure that quasi-identifier and sensitive partitions are bounded by l-diversity and 2 the schema decomposition constraint to eliminate non-arbitrary correlations between non-sensitive and sensitive values to protect Privacy and at the same time increase the aggregate analysis. In our technique, values are grouped together in unique partitions that enforce l-diversity at the level of individuals. We also propose an association preserving technique to increase the ability to learn/analyze from the anonymized data. To evaluate our approach, we conduct a set of experiments to determine the Privacy Breach and investigate the anonymization cost of safe grouping and preserving associations.

We provide a safe grouping principle to ensure that correlated values are grouped together in unique partitions that enforce l-diversity at the level of individuals. We conduct a set of experiments to evaluate Privacy Breach and the anonymization cost of safe grouping.

    Abstract:

    Many power utility companies around the world are moving towards smart grid, which integrates power delivery infrastructure with information and communication technologies. Smart meter is one of the main components of a smart grid. The task of a smart meter is to track energy consumption of a premise and send that information to the utility company. This information can then be used by the utility company to provide a more efficient energy provisioning. Smart meter can also be used to track the power consumption of individual equipment inside the premise, or even control their operation so that they can operate in a more power-efficient manner. Although the use of smart meter has many benefits, there are a number of security concerns regarding its usage. One particular concern is the financial loss that may occur should the security of smart meter is compromised. This paper provides a discussion on the impacts of smart meter security and Privacy Breach that may cause financial losses. The paper then proposed several methods to measure these financial losses which can be used as a guide to power utility companies and their customers to estimate the amount of money and effort that should be spent in order to prevent such security Breach from happening.     Many power utility companies around the world are moving towards smart grid, which integrates power delivery infrastructure with information and communication technologies. Although the use of smart meter has many benefits, there are a number of security concerns regarding its usage. One particular concern is regarding the impacts of security and Privacy Breach of smart meter. This paper focuses on the financial impacts of smart meter security and Privacy Breach. The financial impacts discussed in this paper are derived from the impacts of security and Privacy Breach described in the literature. It is found out that the financial loss may involve various parties including the premise owner, the utility company, as well as the nation. The amount of loss can also go up to billions of dollars. Given the large group of people who may be involved and the large amount of money to be potentially lost should a security or Privacy Breach occur, it is very important for power companies to establish a security policy regarding smart meter and to allocate reasonable amount of resources to secure the deployed smart meter as well as the rest of the smart grid infrastructure.
