Privileged Access and rural vulnerabilities examining social and environmental exploitation in bioenergy development in the american midwest

Less attention has been given to those cases when both the promotion of economic activities and their consequential inequalities are driven from within rural communities themselves. Privileged accounts within communities naturalize environmental concerns and divert attention from the inequalities associated with the costs and risks of economic development. Within this context, it is important to examine local perceptions, framings, and power structures that create and perpetuate asymmetries in Access to natural resources for economic development and the local vulnerabilities they create. Drawing on Freudenberg's theory of Privileged Access and Privileged accounts, this paper examines the promotion and development of biofuels plants in the rural American Midwest. Here, proponents of biofuels development argued that biofuel facilities were ideally suited to local conditions, where large-scale corn production, the main biomass input, is extensive. Drawing on data from surveys of six case study communities in rural Kansas and Iowa, augmented by in-depth stakeholder interviews, we discuss the local support towards biofuels production in the context of environmental concerns. The results indicate significant rural community support despite evidence that the contribution of biofuels production to local livelihoods was minimal. We show how these Privileged accounts create largely unified support locally for biofuels production and quiescence concerning the disproportionality of benefits, potential environmental harms and long term development challenges.

The indirection of this approach offers attractive isolation properties that has resulted in a variety of VMI-based applications dealing with security, performance, and debugging in virtual machine environments. Because it requires Privileged Access to the virtual machine monitor, VMI functionality is unfortunately not available to cloud users on public cloud platforms. In this paper, we present our work on the CloudVMI architecture to address this concern. CloudVMI virtualizes the VMI interface and makes it available as-a-service in a cloud environment. Because it allows introspection of users' VMs running on arbitrary physical machines in a cloud environment, our VMI-as-a-service abstraction allows a new class of cloud-centric VMI applications to be developed. We present the design and implementation of CloudVMI in the Xen hypervisor environment. We evaluate our implementation using a number of VMI applications, including a simple application that illustrates the cross-physical machine capabilities of CloudVMI.

The objection has the form of a dilemma: either it is possible for us to be entitled to beliefs which we do not form, or it is not. If it is, the conditions for introspective justification within the model I advocate are insufficient. If not, they are otiose. I challenge Zimmerman's defence of the first horn of the dilemma.

The main tenet of my account is that one may hare the very same grounds for both a given belief that p and a higher-order belief about this belief, a feature which separates the believer's epistemic situation from that of observers. My account appeals only to those conceptual elements that, arguably, we already use in order to account for perceptual knowledge. It constitutes a naturalizing account in that it does not posit any mysterious faculty of introspection or 'inner perception' mechanism.

Episodes of mind-wandering, where personal thoughts often go unnoticed for some time before being introspected, offer a unique opportunity to study the role of language in introspection. In this paper, we show that inner speech facilitates awareness of mind-wandering. In two experiments, we either interfered with verbal working memory, via articulatory suppression (Exp. 1), or entrained it, via presentation of verbal material (Exp. 2), and measured the resulting awareness of mind-wandering. Articulatory suppression decreased the likelihood to spontaneously notice mind-wandering, whereas verbal material increased retrospective awareness of mind-wandering. In addition, an ecological study using smartphones confirmed that inner speech vividness positively predicted mind-wandering awareness (Exp. 3). Together, these findings support the view that inner speech facilitates introspection of one's thoughts, and therefore provides empirical evidence for a positive relation between language and consciousness.
