A contribution towards a revision of West Palaearctic Procladius Skuse (Diptera:Chironomidae)

Such an exercise would be fraught with many uncertainties. Those species characterized by having marked wings may have the markings extremely faint and perhaps even absent. The spur of the gonostylus is variable in length and shape, in the pharate adult rotated more vertically and compressed, so that association with pupal structure is not simple. It appears that the spur is extended hydraulically on eclosion, perhaps to a variable degree. The one character that appears to remain constant is the phallapodeme toothed at apex or not, but that just separates the subgenus Holotanypus into two groups. Even the type species of s.g. Holotanypus, P. (H.) culiciformis (Linnaeus) is not keyed in Langton & Pinder (2007), though recorded for Britain, because the authors were unable to find a clear separation from P. (H.) choreus (Meigen). We here provide a key to the pupal exuviae of subgenus Holotanypus that are now known to us as a step towards a generic revision1. Terminology as in Langton (1991).

Descriptions of four Nearctic Procladius Skuse pupal exuviae

LangtonAbstract:Associated Procladius Skuse (Holotanypus Roback) material from the Sublette collection was found to have specimens with undescribed immature stages. Pupal exuviae of two species are described for the first time: P. barbatulus Sublette and P. clavus Roback. Adult and larval features are included for P. barbatulus. In addition, specimens of Nearctic P. denticulatus Sublette are compared to Palearctic P. signatus (Zetterstedt) to determine if exuviae can separate these species or suggest that P. signatus is a senior synonym. Finally, associated pupal and larval traits of P. prolongatus Roback are compared to the original description, corroborating the theory that features are unique enough to warrant subgeneric status.

In addition, an amendment to the adult male diagnosis of Procladius (Psilotanypus) is provided.

Chironomidae (Diptera): quantitative palaeosalinity indicators for lakes of western Canada

SmolAbstract:A survey of chironomid remains preserved in the surficial sediments of 86 British Columbia lakes was conducted to assess the feasibility of reconstructing palaeosalinities from assemblages of fossil chironomid head capsules. Many taxa common in freshwater lakes were either rare or absent at higher salinities. Lakes having salinities greater than about 10.0 g∙L−1 were distinguished by the overwhelming relative abundance of Cricotopus/Orthocladius. In less saline waters, common taxa included Chironomus, Procladius, Psectrocladius, and the subtribe Tanytarsina. Heterotrissocladius, Lauterborniella/Zavreliella, Pagastiella, and Sergentia were only collected in freshwater habitats. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that three environmental variables (late summer lakewater salinity and concentrations of Sr and total P) explained significant variation in the weighted averages of taxa.
