  • the delayed trigger voice key an improved analogue voice key for Psycholinguistic Research
    Behavior Research Methods, 2005
Co-Authors: Michael D Tyler, Leigh Tyler, Denis K Burnham
    Abstract:

Many Researchers rely on analogue voice keys for Psycholinguistic Research. However, the triggering of traditional simple threshold voice keys (STVKs) is delayed after response onset, and the delay duration may vary depending on initial phoneme type. The delayed trigger voice key (DTVK), a standalone electronic device that incorporates an additional minimum signal duration parameter, is described and validated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, recorded responses from a nonword naming task were presented to the DTVK and an STVK. As compared with hand-coded reaction times from visual inspection of the waveform, the DTVK was more accurate than the STVK, overall and across initial phoneme type. Rastle and Davis (2002) showed that an STVK more accurately detected an initial [s] when it was followed by a vowel than when followed by a consonant. Participants’ responses from that study were presented to the DTVK in Experiment 2, and accuracy was equivalent for initial [s] in vowel and consonant contexts. Details for the construction of the DTVK are provided.

  • lex i and ii two databases of surface word forms for Psycholinguistic Research in spanish
Behavior Research Methods Instruments & Computers, 1996
Co-Authors: Julio Santiago, Fernando Justicia Justicia, Alfonso Palma, Dolores Huertas, Nicolas Gutierrez
    Abstract:

Two databases of Spanish surface word forms are presented. Surface word forms are words considered as orthographically or phonologically specified without reference to their meaning or syntactic category. The databases are based on the productive written vocabulary of children between the ages of 6 and 10 years. Statistical and structural information is presented concerning surface word-form frequency, consonant-vowel (CV) structure, number of syllables, syllables, syllable CV structure, and subsyllabic units. LEX I was intended to aid in the study of reading processes. Entries were orthographic surface word forms; words were divided in their components following orthographic criteria. LEX II was designed for spoken language Research. Accordingly, words were transcribed phonologically and phonological criteria were applied in extracting the internal units. Information about stress location was also provided. Together, LEX I and LEX II represent a useful tool for psycholinguists interested in the study of people acquiring Spanish as a first or foreign language and of Spanish-speaking populations in general.

  • LEXOP: A lexical database providing orthography-phonology statistics for French monosyllabic words
Behavior Research Methods Instruments and Computers, 1999
    Co-Authors: Ronald Peereman, Alain Content
    Abstract:

During the last 20 years, Psycholinguistic Research has identified many variables that influence reading and spelling processes. We describe a new computerized lexical database, LEXOP, which provides quantitative descriptors about the relations between orthography and phonology for French monosyllabic words. Three main classes of variables are considered: consistency of print-to-sound and sound-to-print associations, frequency of orthography-phonology correspondences, and word neighborhood characteristics.

  • memory based language processing Psycholinguistic Research in the 1990s
    Annual Review of Psychology, 1998
    Co-Authors: Gail Mckoon, Roger Ratcliff
    Abstract:

    ▪ Abstract There are two main domains of Research in Psycholinguistics: sentence processing, concerned with how the syntactic structures of sentences are computed, and text processing, concerned with how the meanings of larger units of text are understood. In recent sentence processing Research, a new and controversial theme is that syntactic computations may rely heavily on statistical information about the relative frequencies with which different syntactic structures occur in the language. In text processing, recent Research has focused on what information the words and ideas of a text evoke from long- term memory quickly, passively, and at low processing cost. Research in both domains has begun to use the information that can be obtained from large corpora of naturally occurring texts.
