Moving past the vaccine/autism controversy - to examine potential vaccine neurological harms.

The great strawman of autism has been so emphasized by the vaccine industry that it, and it alone, often appears in authoritative discussions of adverse effects of the MMR and other vaccines. By dismissing the chimerical vaccine/autism controversy, vaccine defenders often dismiss all genuinely neurological aftereffects of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) and other vaccines, including well-documented events, such as relatively rare cases of encephalopathy and encephalitis. This report explains that autism is not a physical or neurological Disorder. It is not caused by injury or disease of the brain. It is a developmental Disorder that has no physical origins and no physical symptoms. It is extremely unlikely that vaccines are causing autism; but it is extremely likely that they are causing more neurological damage than currently appreciated, some of it resulting in Psychosocial disabilities that can be confused with autism and other Psychosocial Disorders. This confusion between a developmental, Psychosocial Disorder and a physical neurological disease has played into the hands of interest groups who want to deny that vaccines have any neurological and associated neuropsychiatric effects. A review of the scientific literature, textbooks, and related media commentary is integrated with basic clinical knowledge. This report shows how scientific sources have used the vaccine/autism controversy to avoid dealing with genuine neurological risks associated with vaccines and summarizes evidence that vaccines, including the MMR, can cause serious neurological Disorders. Manufacturers have been allowed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to gain vaccine approval without placebo-controlled clinical trials. The misleading vaccine autism controversy must be set aside in favor of examining actual neurological harms associated with vaccines, including building on existing research that has been ignored. Manufacturers of vaccines must be required to conduct placebo-controlled clinical studies for existing vaccines and for government approval of new vaccines. Many probable or confirmed neurological adverse events occur within a few days or weeks after immunization and could be detected if the trials were sufficiently large. Contrary to current opinion, large, long-term placebo-controlled trials of existing and new vaccines would be relatively easy and safe to conduct.

The research system includes approximately 30,000 scientists and more than 100,000 supporting staff actively engaged in research related to agriculture. The present agricultural research system comprises essentially two main streams, viz., the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at the national level and Agricultural Universities (AUs) at the state level. Besides these two, several other agencies such as the Conventional/General Universities, Scientific Organizations, various Ministries/Departments at the Center, and Private or Voluntary Organizations participate directly or indirectly in research activities related to agriculture (Borthakur and Singh, 2013).Working environment in any organization poses a variety of challenges. These challenges may be self-created or experienced from others. If a person wants to succeed, one must have the ability to respond positively to such challenges. Otherwise, it may lead to emotional disturbances in the form of frustration, anger, anxiety, etc., which in turn affect individual productivity. There is increasing interest in how people process emotionally relevant information and the ability to process it efficiently and accurately can have an effect on an individual's life outcomes such as achieving success at work and their general wellbeing (Salovey and Grewal, 2005; and Brackett et al., 2011).Emotional Intelligence (EI) is "the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions to discriminate among them and to use information to guide one's thinking and actions" (Salovey and Mayer, 1990). The concept of EI was popularized by Goleman (1995) in his book, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. He described a connection between emotional competencies and prosocial behavior and declared EI is more powerful than Intelligence Quotient (IQ) in predicting success in life.EI is hypothesized to influence the success with which employees interact with colleagues, the strategies they use to manage conflict and stress and overall job performance (Ashkanasy and Daus, 2005; Lopes et al., 2006a; and Martins et al., 2010). Employees with higher EI also received better peer and supervisor ratings of interpersonal facilitation, stress tolerance and leadership potential than those with lower EI (Lopes et al., 2006b).Stress in general and occupational stress in particular is a fact of modern-day life that seems to have been on the increase. Occupational (job, work or workplace) stress has become one of the most serious health issues in the modern world (Lu et al., 2003), as it occurs in any job and is even more present than decades ago (Poloski and Bogdanic, 2008). Occupational stress among working people is drastically increasing worldwide. Stress at workplace has become an integral part of everyday life and is referred to as 'worldwide epidemic' by the World Health Organization (Kayastha et al., 2012).Occupational stress is a Psychosocial Disorder which is the result of interaction between the worker and his/her work environment (Kumar and Suresh, 2010). If left unidentified, it can cause serious physical and physiological illness to the individual. Occupational stress may occur due to stress factors at the individual level or at the organizational level or at the interface of the two. Association between Psychosocial Disorders and oral health

There are many ways in which mental and physical health impact each other. Psychosocial factors play a part in the pathogenesis of physical health, and oral health is no exception. Chronic and painful oral symptoms lead to Psychosocial Disorder and at the same time, some patients with Psychosocial Disorders experience painful oral and facial symptoms. Several investigators have concluded that Psychosocial factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of an array of oral problems, ranging from poor oral hygiene to chronic pain Disorders, such as temporomandibular joint Disorders, burning mouth syndrome, and atypical pain. This review aims at the in-depth analysis of the correlation between Psychosocial Disorders and various oral symptoms.

prevalence of xerostomia and burning sensation in patients with Psychosocial Disorders

Certain oral symptoms like xerostomia and burning sensation are thought to be associated with psychological status of individuals. However, very little data are available on the presence and prevalence of xerostomia and burning sensation in patients suffering from Psychosocial Disorders, especially so in the Indian population. This study is expected not only to provide a baseline data about the prevalence, but help in a better understanding of the association between these oral symptoms and the psychological status of the patients.Two hundred adult individuals diagnosed with some Psychosocial Disorder, either institutionalized or under out-patient care, were included in the study. Based on direct interviews and using standard questionnaires, xerostomia and burning sensation as well as certain other associated symptoms were evaluated.Analysis of the results showed prevalence of xerostomia and burning sensation to be 43.5% and 9.5% respectively among the studied population. The mean Visual Analogue Scale score for burning sensation was 7.23.Xerostomia and burning sensation are prevalent in significantly high number of patients with Psychosocial Disorders. Assessment of these oral symptoms in such patients therefore should be done on a routine basis. Conversely, there is also the possibility of patients with xerostomia and burning mouth syndrome possessing an altered Psychosocial status. Thus, standardized evaluation of Psychosocial state should be incorporated in the examination protocol.
