    Abstract:

    Air is a mechanical mixture of gases and water vapor. Dry air is composed chiefly of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. With regard to these dry air compounds, the composition of the air is practically the same everywhere. On the other hand the amount of water vapor in the air varies greatly with the particular locality and with the weather conditions. The science which investigates the thermal properties of moist air, measurement and control of the moisture contents of air may properly be termed Psychrometrics. Psychromertrics charts are graphical presentations of the psychrometric properties of the air. The use of such chart permits the graphical analysis of psychrometric data and processes, and thereby facilitates the solution of many practical problems dealing with air. Since there are no psychrometric charts available in the form of computer display done by any invidual or organisation in Malaysia, in this project, a psychrometric chart is developed and used to analyse the properties of air in Shah Alam and compared it with certain places in Malaysia.   • Implementation of a computational tool to study psychrometric processes in mechanical engineering courses

    Abstract:

    This paper explores the use of a computational tool developed in Microsoft Excel to enhance the students’ understanding of the different psychrometric processes of moist air in courses such as Thermodynamics and Air Conditioning. The proposed computational tool allows students to focus on more design-oriented problems. Furthermore, students will have the ability to see immediate results to variations of the design conditions as well as different parameters that would affect the different psychrometric processes. The proposed tool also gives students a quick visualization of the evaluated psychrometric process in the psychrometric chart as well as the ability to quickly determine psychrometric properties of moist air. Feedback from students and class instructors proves that the use of the proposed tool significantly enhances the student learning experience in these two courses, make the course more dynamic, and motivate the students to learn the material.

    Abstract:

    The use of computational tools such as Mathcad or Microsoft Excel to enhance the students' understanding of the physics behind psychrometric processes in buildings in an air conditioning technical elective course is explored in this paper. By utilizing Mathcad and/or Excel, students can be taught to create a set of psychrometric-related functions that can greatly diminish the number of calculations required to tackle design-oriented problems. By doing this, two levels of conceptual understanding are enhanced. First, students gain an appreciation of the basic psychrometric processes for buildings when creating specific functions in Mathcad/Excel, and second, students gain the ability to create automated worksheets for specific applications, allowing them to see immediate results to variations in input design conditions, as well as on different parameters.     In this paper a semi-empirical model describing heat and mass transfer on a cold surface in humid air under supersaturated frosting conditions is presented. The lack of psychrometric data in the supersaturated zone of the psychrometric chart has historically impeded the ability of researchers to accurately predict heat and mass transfer in supersaturated air. The work described in this paper has been partially made possible by developing a systematic procedure to compute the properties of supersaturated air, especially in the low temperature zone of the psychrometric chart. Development of such a capability will allow us to predict the amount of frost collected, the frost deposition and heat transfer rates, frost thickness and surface temperature, and other important parameters.

    Abstract:

    This paper presents psychrometric formulations of supersaturated moist air. The results are presented for a temperature range of −40°C to 40°C and humidity ratios from 0 kg/kga to 0.1 kg/kga for standard atmospheric pressure. These properties are developed employing the virial equation of state and the virial coefficients for air and water vapor. The results are presented in the form of psychrometric charts in the supersaturated zone that include the humidity ratio, specific volume, specific enthalpy, and the degree of saturation. The data presented will extend the available body of psychrometric moist air data and provide a capability to study situations involving simultaneous heat and mass transfer in supersaturated air, which has historically been impeded by the lack of property data in the supersaturated zone of the psychrometric chart.

    The psychrometric chart is widely used in searching for the properties of mxiture of air and vapor.The psychrometric chart at 1 atm is common,but it is less reported which is suitable for the system air-water at any temperature and any total pressure.And the data searched by human from the psychrometric chart are not accurate.So it is necessary to simulate psychrometric chart by Origin 7.5 and Visual Basic 6.0.Further more,the software to plot psychrometric chart and search for the properties of humid air is developed. With this software can we draw psychrometric chart at both any total pressure and any temperature ranges.And the nature data of humid air also could be aquired quickly and accurately.The easy-manipulated software runs steadily and its interface is friendly.
