  • The rust fungi of Luzuriaga (Luzuriagaceae) with description of a new species, Puccinia luzuriagae-polyphyllae
    Mycological Progress, 2009
    Co-Authors: Reinhard Berndt
    Abstract:

Three species of rust fungi (Uredinales), Puccinia perforans, P. fuegiana (= Uromyces skottsbergii), and Aecidium callixenis have been described on members of Luzuriaga (Luzuriagaceae). Puccinia luzuriagae-polyphyllae is added as a new species on Luzuriaga polyphylla from Chile. The rust had been confused hitherto with P. perforans occurring on L. radicans. Both species differ from P. fuegiana on L. marginata by the absence of a uredinial state and several telial characters. The investigated collections of Puccinia species on Luzuriaga indicate that each is restricted to a single host species. A determination key is presented.

  • New species of rust fungi (Uredinales) from South Africa and new observations on known species
    Mycological Progress, 2009
    Co-Authors: Reinhard Berndt
    Abstract:

Four new species and a new variety of rust fungi (Uredinales) are described from South Africa: Puccinia montis-venenosi on Galium spurium ssp. africanum and G. tomentosum , P. naufraga on Helichrysum sp., Uredo fynbosense on Phylica oleifolia and Ph. buxifolia , Uromyces eclipsis on Zygophyllum morgsana , and Puccinia lycii var. bizonata on Lycium sp. Puccinia austro-africana is proposed as a new combination for P. tetragoniae var. austro-africana on Tetragonia . New observations are presented about already known species: The uredinial stage of Uromyces pentaschistidis is described; Uredo monechmatis is newly reported for South Africa on new hosts and its uredinial morphology is described; a detailed description is provided for the poorly known P. anthospermi ; the identity of Uredo zygophylli , U. zygophyllina and Uromyces dinteri is discussed; a key is presented for the known Puccinia species on Helichrysum in South Africa.

  • New species, reports, observations and taxonomical changes of southern African rust fungi (Uredinales)
    Mycological Progress, 2006
    Co-Authors: Reinhard Berndt, Elisabeth Uhlmann
    Abstract:

This work presents research on the diversity of the southern African rust mycobiota (Uredinales). It describes new species, lists new reports and adds new information on several rust fungi. Puccinia cornurediata , Puccinia dioscoreae-mundtii , Puccinia horti-kirstenboschi , Puccinia othonnoides , Puccinia rapipes , Puccinia subindumentana , Uredo otholobii and Uromyces lotononidicola are described as new; Puccinia verwoerdiana is assigned to Puccinia lycii as a synonym, and Uredo lotononi to U. lotononidicola . Comprehensive accounts and keys are presented for Puccinia species on Lycium (Solanaceae), Helichrysum and Othonna (Asteraceae). Puccinia butleri and Uromyces bidenticola are new reports for South Africa, and Puccinia spinulosa is new for Namibia. So far, the latter species has only been known from Madagascar, and P. butleri from the Indian subcontinent. Taxonomical novelties are P. cornurediata R. Berndt; P. dioscoreae-mundtii R. Berndt, A.R. Wood & E. Uhlmann; P. horti-kirstenboschi R. Berndt & E. Uhlmann; P. othonnoides R. Berndt, A.R. Wood & E. Uhlmann; P. rapipes R. Berndt & E. Uhlmann; P. subindumentana R. Berndt; U. otholobii R. Berndt, A.R. Wood & E. Uhlmann and U. lotononidicola R. Berndt

  • new species of rust fungi from brazil
    Mycological Progress, 2004
Co-Authors: Reinhard Berndt, Francisco Das Chagas Oliveira Freire
    Abstract:

New species of rust fungi (Basidiomycota, Uredinales) are described from Brazil: Maravalia allophyli on Allophylus sp., the first Maravalia species on Sapindaceae, Puccinia tianguensis on Hyptis sp. (Lamiaceae), Uredo calatheae on Calathea neoviedii (Marantaceae), and Uredo schizolobii on Schizolobium amazonicum (Caesalpiniaceae). Puccinia fuireniphila is proposed as a new name for Puccinia fuirenicola.

  • multilocus genotypes of the wheat leaf rust fungus Puccinia triticina in worldwide regions indicate past and current long distance migration
    Phytopathology, 2019
Co-Authors: J. A. Kolmer, Yair Anikster, Maria E Ordonez, Silvia German, Alexey Morgounov, Z A Pretorius, B Visser, Henriette Goyeau, Maricelis Acevedo
    Abstract:

Many plant pathogenic fungi have a global distribution across diverse ecological zones and agricultural production systems. Puccinia triticina, the wheat leaf rust fungus, is a major pathogen in ma...

  • self fertility and other distinguishing characteristics of a new morphotype of Puccinia coronata pathogenic on smooth brome grass
    Mycologia, 2003
Co-Authors: Yair Anikster, J Manisterski, Tamar Eilam, K J Leonard
    Abstract:

A new morphotype of Puccinia coronata, pathogenic to Bromus inermis, a common roadside and pasture grass in the northern United States, was discovered in the 1990s and described as P. coronata f. sp. bromi by Delgado et al in 2001. Puccinia coronata f. sp. bromi does not require fertilization of pycnia to produce aecia on its alternate host, whereas fertiliza- tion is required in all other varieties or formae spe- ciales of P. coronata with aecial hosts in the family Rhamnaceae and for which life cycles have been de- scribed. Promycelia of P. coronata f. sp. bromi produce only two basidiospores, and each receives a pair of nuclei from the promycelium. The nuclei divide again so that mature basidiospores each contain four nuclei. Puccinia coronata f. sp. bromi has smaller te- liospores than P. coronata var. avenae, and its substo- matal vesicles are non-septate and distinctly shaped compared to those of P. coronata var. avenae .I n ad- dition, nuclei of P. coronata f. sp. bromi contain less DNA than those of P. coronata var. avenae. Puccinia coronata f. sp. bromi is further distinguished from P. coronata var. avenae and P. coronata var. hordei in be- ing avirulent on both oat and barley, whereas neither P. coronata var. avenae nor P. coronata var. hordei are virulent on Bromus inermis.
