Radiodiagnosis in polyarthropathies

MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred patients aged 18 to 55 years with polyarthropathies were examined. All the patients underwent X-ray study of affected joints and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) was carried out in 86 patients. Contrast-enhanced MRI was performed in 44 (14.7%) patients. RESULTS. X-ray study and MSCT generally revealed changes involving the bony structures of the joints. MRI visualized changes in both soft tissue and bony structures. Articular syndrome and bone marrow edema syndrome were identified. Subchondral erosions, minor subchondral cysts, and extra-articular manifestations of the inflammatory process were revealed earlier than at X-ray study. CONCLUSION Analysis of the findings indicated that MRI could enhance the informative value of clinical and radiographic examination of patients with polyarthropathies.

Radiodiagnosis of pelvic injuries

The examination of victims with pelvic injuries allows one to state that multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) can define the type of pelvic ring instability and the nature of fragment displacement, visualize all types of fractures of pelvic bones and cotyloid cavity walls, and reveal intrapelvic hematomas, as well as changes in adjacent soft tissues, sacroiliac joints, intrapelvic vessels and organs. MSCT angiography is a technique that can be successfully used at different stages of diagnosis and as the first imaging method or as a pre-examination one if the diagnosis is established and as a control study. The scope and quality of obtained information are generally sufficient to make a decision on treatment policy.

Radiodiagnosis has been found to be inexpedient at inpatient stage of care. At the inpatient stage of care, there may be two ways to conduct diagnostic studies: 1) to concurrently use traditional X-ray and ultrasound studies and 2) to employ multislice spiral computed tomography as the method of the former stage in severe concomitant injury. Multislice spiral computed tomography has been established to be the method of choice in examining the patients with polytrauma, allowing for early identification of the whole spectrum of injuries in various anatomic regions.

Problemy tuberkuleza i bolezneĭ legkikh, 2009Co-Authors: S M Legeza, A V PerfilevAbstract:Routine X-ray examination indicated that the rate of cavernous and fibrocavernous tuberculosis was 21.4 and 25.9%, respectively. Computed tomography (CT) showed that the ratio of patients with cavernous tuberculosis to those with fibrocavernous one changed and was equal to 14.3 and 33.0%, respectively. The number of patients diagnosed as having fibrocavernous tuberculosis increased. According to the traditional studies, the number of patients with one lobe being affected turned out to be higher. Accordingly, that of patients with involvement of the whole lung or two lungs proved to be underestimated at cavitary analogue X-ray study (AXS) or linear tomography (LT). Preoperative X-ray CT detected a larger number of caverns and tuberculomas. While identifying decay cavities in tuberculomas, X-ray CT enhanced the effectiveness of a study from 17 to 36% as compared with the results obtained at AXS and LT that revealed specific changes in the intrathoracic lymph nodes and inoculation foci in the lung. The nature and scope of elective operations were reconsidered from the results of X-ray CT.

Exposure of patients to radiation risk in common medical practice

This radiation exposure differs from occupational public exposure, since a direct benefit is conferred upon the patient. The theoretical risks include genetic mutations, carcinogenesis and teratogenesis. In Radiodiagnosis and nuclear medicine, the absorbed doses are very low, and no hazardous effect has been observed. In radiation therapy however, where high doses are delivered to a small number of patients, radio-induced carcinogenesis is well documented. It is by no means sure that the nuclear risk must be taken into account, and fully justifies the accomplishments and recommendations of the French radiation protection programs. There is no question that the nuclear risk-benefit equation resulting from medical exposure is tipped heavily in favor of benefit.

Quality Assurance Program in Radiodiagnosis in a Tertiary Care Hospital in India

This has put additional onus on the practitioners to maintain strict quality control to improve efficiency, lower exposure as well as cost. Aims: The aim of the study is to determine quality assurance program in Radiodiagnosis in order to identify the gaps and possible avenues of improvement. Settings and design: The cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in India in the second half of calendar year 2008. Materials and methods: The department did not have a defined and documented quality assurance program. Hence, the factors which are part of such a QAP were identified and the practices in the department against those factors were compared. The scoring was done based on the degree of compliance; complete, partial or no compliance. Results: A total of 23 parameters/subparameters were evaluated to find out the extent of quality assurance program being implemented in the study setting. Out of maximum 230, a score of 135 was achieved by the department. Conclusion: The department of Radiodiagnosis in the tertiary care institute need to institute a QAP for improving the quality and efficiency for better utilization of resources.
