    Abstract:

    The aim of this study was to describe the specific gross and Radiographic Anatomy of the digestive tract of inland bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). Eleven bearded dragon cadavers of both sexes (6 females, 5 males) were dissected to examine, measure, and document the specific gross Anatomy of the alimentary canal. Measurements collected from the cadavers included snout-vent length, total length of the alimentary canal, and the lengths of the individual sections of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, ampulla coli, isthmus coli, rectum, and the distance from the coprodeum to the vent opening. Twenty-two healthy adult bearded dragons (13 females, 9 males) maintained under standardized husbandry conditions underwent a physical examination, blood collection, and whole-body dorsoventral and lateral survey radiographs; these animals were used to provide the Radiographic images of the complete digestive tract. For the subsequent contrast passage studies, two different contrast media, barium sulfate (BaSO4, Barilux suspension) and an iodinated ionic radiocontrast agent (Sodium meglumine amidotrizoate [SMAT], Gastrografin), were used. Water-diluted Barilux suspension (dose 9 ml/kg) was administered orally to 5 bearded dragons, while Gastrografin (dose 5ml/kg) was administered orally to 21 bearded dragons. Four animals were used for both contrast media studies, but received a break of four weeks in between. Dorsoventral and laterolateral radiographs were collected at 0 (baseline), 15, 30, and 45 minutes and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 30, and 36 hours after each contrast medium was administered. Both contrast media were found to illustrate the alimentary tracts in the adult bearded dragons. Transit time was substantially faster with SMAT, and SMAT illustrated the entire gastrointestinal tract within 36 hours; BaSO4 did not fully illustrate the gastrointestinal tract in 36 hours. These results might serve as a guideline for the interpretation of subsequent contrast studies in this lizard species.

    Objectives:Endoscopic optic nerve decompression has variable success rates. Our goal was to further delineate the Radiographic Anatomy of the optic canal to determine whether the variable success can be explained on anatomic principles.Methods:The optic canal dimensions and the degree of optic canal exposure to the sphenoid sinus were measured on sinus computed tomography images of 96 patients.Results:A total of 191 optic canals were analyzed (111 female subjects and 80 male subjects). The average medial canal wall length was 1.48 cm (range, 0.7 to 2.3 cm). The length in male subjects was 1.61 cm (range, 1.1 to 2.3 cm), as compared to 1.39 cm (range, 0.7 to 2.0 cm) in female subjects (p < 0.001). Onodi cells and pneumatized anterior clinoid processes were present on 14 and 16 images, respectively. (2) Understand the role variation in optic canal Anatomy may have in the variability of outcomes in optic nerve decompression.MethodsFine cut computed tomography images of the sinuses were obtained with an IRB waiver. Optic canal dimensions were measured on sinus computed tomography images of 96 patients. 191 optic canals were analyzed (111 females, 80 males).     Tanzania Veterinary Journal, 2019; 34(1):58-67The caracal (Caracal caracal) also known as Simbamangu is widely distributed in Africa. Captive caracals commonly present with similar infectious and non-infectious diseases of the thorax and abdomen as domestic cats. The aim of this study was to describe the normal Radiographic Anatomy of the thorax and abdomen in captive caracals as a reference for clinical use. Radiography of the thorax and abdomen was performed in two healthy adult caracals during their annual health examinations. The thoracolumbar spine had 20 vertebrae. Pairs of ribs were 13, which corresponded to the number of thoracic vertebrae. The last pair of ribs was floating. The sternum was fairly straight and consisted of manubrium sterni, xiphoid process and six sternebrae. Clavicles were seen. Hypaxial muscles were conspicuous in all animals. The trachea was seen with mineralised cartilage rings in all animals. The cardiac silhouette was elongated and more horizontally positioned in the oldest animal (8.8 years). The spleen was clearly seen on the ventrodorsal view. The length of kidneys was approximately two times the length of the second lumbar vertebra (L2). Bunching of small intestines in the right central abdomen was seen in the heaviest caracal (14.8 kg). The diameter of the small intestine was approximately 0.7 times the height of L2. For the large intestine the diameter was approximately 1.7 and 0.7 times the height and length of L2, respectively. Knowledge of the normal Radiographic Anatomy of the thorax and abdomen of the caracal may be useful in the diagnosis of diseases and in routine health examinations

    Abstract:

    The aim of this study was to provide the detailed normal gross osteology and Radiographic Anatomy of the pelvic limb in adult small East African goats as a reference for clinical use, biomedical research and teaching. Radiography of the pelvic limb was performed in five adult small East African goats. Bone specimens of four skeletally mature small East African goats were used for gross osteological study. The ilial wing was wide. The ischiatic tuberosity was prominent and well developed. The acetabulum was rounded. The minor trochanter was located caudomedially, and the femoral trochlea was deep and narrow. The lateral and medial condyles of the femur were approximately of the same size. The tibial tuberosity was prominent, and the cochlea grooves were deep with a pronounced intermediate ridge. The trochlea of the talus was deep. The patella presented a prominent tuberosity on the cranial surface. The metatarsal sesamoid bone was seen in all animals. The observed gross osteology and Radiographic Anatomy of the pelvic limb of small East African goats was consistent with the presence of strong extensor muscles of the hip, stifle and tarsus for propulsion during terrestrial walking and trotting

    The objective of this study was to provide the detailed normal gross osteology and Radiographic Anatomy of the thoracic limb in goats as a reference for clinical use and in biomedical research. Radiography of the thoracic limb was performed in five small East African goats. Radiographic findings were correlated with bone specimens from four adult small East African goats. The scapula was narrow. The major tubercle was large and extended proximally above the head of the humerus. The lateral supracondylar crest was less prominent. The lateral and medial epicondyles of the humerus were almost of the same size. The lateral surface of the lateral condyle of the humerus presented a prominent depression for the origin of extensors of the carpus and digits. The cranially located radial notch was deep seated and the radial tuberosity was represented by a rough area located nearer to the head of the radius. The fifth metacarpal bone was seen in all animals. The morphology of the thoracic limb of small East African goats indicated the presence of powerful extensor muscles and is restricted to forward and backward movements as an adaptation to terrestrial lifestyle

    Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary, 2015; 82 (1)The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is distributed primarily in the Himalayas and southern China. It is classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The aim of this study was to describe the normal osteology and Radiographic Anatomy of the thoracic limb of the red panda. Radiography of the right thoracic limb was performed in seven captive adult red pandas. Radiographic findings were correlated with bone specimens from three adult animals. The scapula was wide craniocaudally and presented with a large area for the origin of the teres major muscle. The square-shaped major tubercle did not extend proximal to the head of the humerus. The medial epicondyle was prominent. A supracondylar foramen was present. The radial tuberosity and sesamoid bone for the abductor digiti I longus were prominent. The accessory carpal bone was directed palmarolaterally. Metacarpal bones were widely spread. The thoracic limb morphology of the red panda evidenced by osteology and radiography indicated flexibility of the thoracic limb joints and well-developed flexor and supinator muscles, which are important in arboreal quadrupedal locomotion. Knowledge gained during this study may prove useful in identifying skeletal material or remains and diagnosing musculoskeletal diseases and injuries of the thoracic limb
