    Abstract:

    This paper discusses an ethnographic study of a commercial prototyping software Development project. A distinguishing feature of the Development was its concentration in one span of time and in one room, with both users and developers participating. This gave rise to a working practice based around the use of low technology representations of design. The case study explores practical issues important for prototyping: time management, user involvement, everyday design representations and the Development environment. The mundane nature of design representations facilitated user participation. The public representations of work on the walls showed the current state in design of different components of the system and facilitated collaborative activities. The case study was part of a larger research project (1995–1998) which investigated the commercial use of prototyping in the UK. The Development was influenced by a recent trend in commercial prototyping practice, Rapid Application Development (RAD). Implications of the case study for RAD and participatory design are discussed.

    Abstract:

    Rapid Application Development (RAD) is an approach to information systems (IS) Development which is much discussed in the practitioner literature. However, there is comparatively little research data on this topic. This paper forms a report of the results of a multi-disciplinary research project which has been studying this Development approach for the last three years. The paper discusses seven case studies of RAD projects and compares each to issues relating to a number of RAD principles as represented in methodologies such as the recent open standard known as dynamic systems Development method. We conclude with a discussion of a number of important questions relating to further research on RAD.

    Abstract:

    This paper describes an investigation into the utility of an agile Development approach known as Rapid Application Development (RAD) within a large-scale Development project conducted within the public sector in the UK. Features of RAD as an ‘agile’ information systems Development method (ISDM) are discussed and previous research identifying properties of Development environments most conducive to its Application are described. A case study is then presented based upon a long-term qualitative investigation of the ‘unbundling’ of a commercial RAD-like ISDM. The evidence from this case leads us to question established wisdom in relation to appropriate adoption and Application of agile Development within large-scale and complex Development environments.

  • Design breakdowns, scenarios and Rapid Application Development

    Abstract:

    In this paper we consider the way in which two representational forms, scenarios and design breakdowns, which have emerged in the traditions of human-centred design are relevant within the recent commercial emphasis on Rapid Application Development (RAD). RAD is a contingent approach to interactive software Development that is characterised by large amounts of user involvement, incremental prototyping and product-based project management. Scenarios have become popular as an intermediate representation within the human–computer interaction and computer supported co-operative work communities. Design breakdowns have been suggested as a useful organising device and design technique within the co-operative prototyping literature. Both these representational forms are not currently utilised within the commercial RAD tradition. In order to detail the relevance of these concepts to commercial Development, we describe the ‘natural history’ of one particular RAD project and show how scenarios, breakdowns and the resolution of such breakdowns contributed to the successful implementation of an information system within a small commercial organisation. We conclude with a discussion of lessons from our work and some intended future work in this area.

    Rapid Application Development (RAD) is a contingent information systems Development method that has arisen in response to business and Development uncertainty in the commercial information systems engineering domain. Participatory design (PD) is a style of software Development that has achieved some significance within a number of academic research areas and can be seen as a response to dissatisfaction with the underlying philosophy of dominant software Development approaches. At the macro level, the two Development styles appear divergent. However, at the micro level, there are many potential points of synergy. In the paper, both the RAD and PD traditions are reviewed and areas of possible cross-fertilisation are indicated. The efficacy of some of these points of synergy are illustrated in relation to aspects of empirical research on RAD approaches, particularly in relation to the utility of the concepts of scenarios and design breakdowns to RAD work.

  • Best practices for Rapid Application Development of AJAX based Rich Internet Applications

    AJAX is a powerful script based approach for Rich Internet Application Development, yet AJAX is suffering from various complexities which make the AJAX based Rich Internet Application engineering is difficult and Rapid Application Development is supported inadequately. If we can simplify the AJAX based Rich Internet Application engineering process by providing standards, the Rapid Application Development methodology can be used effectively to raise the productivity and the quality. In this paper, we propose a set of best practices to facilitate the project management of AJAX based Rich Internet Applications - hence utilize Rapid Application Development methodology - in the initial Development and post-deployment maintenance, modification and expansion phases. These best practices are meant to increase the realization of the Rich Internet Application and the AJAX adoption - therefore reduce the complexities - by providing a standard structural arrangement for the Development project. We plan to design a general architecture for AJAX based Rich Internet Applications and combine with the best practices discussed in this paper to formulate a new platform to support the Rapid Application Development methodology adequate, by increasing the realization, which causes to minimize the complexities.

    Rich Internet Applications have gained a good demand in web engineering, and AJAX plays a major role as a script based technique to develop Rich Internet Applications, even though its adoption is considered difficult due to various complexities. If the root cause for these complexities can be identified and the difficulties can be overcome, we can simplify the AJAX based Rich Internet Applications engineering and support the Rapid Application Development methodology to produce Rich Web Apps faster, while maintaining the quality. We have identified the importance of a general architecture for Rich Internet Applications - which is capable of addressing the difficulties in AJAX adoption - and we propose some essential features which need to be expected from the general architecture; based on the knowledge gained from a survey and a series of experiments. These features are supposed to be used, to design a general hybrid Rich Internet Application architecture - which increases the support in Rapid Application Development - in our ongoing research.

    With popular Applications such as Google and Facebook enabling a very feature rich experience, users expect to feel the same richness in other web Applications they consume as well. As an open source technology, AJAX plays a major role in Rich Internet Application Engineering. But its adoption within Rich Internet Application engineering is complex and difficult due to various reasons. Rapid Application Development is a methodology which can be used to produce such Applications Rapidly with the use of Computer Aided Software Engineering tools. In this paper, we try to interpret the current status related to difficulties and complexities of Rapid Application Development of AJAX based Rich Internet Applications and suggest possible solutions to be investigated in subsequent work.
