  • the origins and practice of participatory Rural Appraisal
    World Development, 1994
    Co-Authors: Robert Chambers
    Abstract:

Summary. - Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) describes a growing family of approaches and methods to enable local people to share, enhance and analyze their knowledge of life and conditions, to plan and to act. PRA has sources in activist participatory research, agroecosystem analysis, applied anthropology, field research on farming systems, and Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA). In RRA information is more elicited and extracted by outsiders; in PRA it is more shared and owned by local people. Participatory methods include mapping and modeling, transect walks, matrix scoring, seasonal calendars, trend and change analysis, well-being and wealth ranking and grouping, and analytical diagramming. PRA applications include natural resources management, agriculture, poverty and social programs, and health and food security. Dominant behavior by outsiders may explain why it has taken until the 1990s for the analytical capabilities of local people to be better recognized and for PRA to emerge, grow and spread.

  • Rapid Rural Appraisal, Gender and Health – Alternative ways of listening to needs
    IDS Bulletin, 1992
    Co-Authors: Alice Welbourn
    Abstract:

Summary The article describes the use of Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) in training development workers to think differently about the issues of gender and health. It is argued that unless a change in perspective takes place at field level, there is little prospect for improvement. RRA is a concept and methodology which challenges conventional assumptions about communities and their needs. Various examples of different RRA techniques are used to illustrate the kind of information which development workers can learn for themselves about the communities with whom they work, provided that they know how to and are ready to listen.

  • Rapid Rural Appraisal: Teaching Undergraduates Field Research in Rural México
Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, 2003
    Co-Authors: Charles W. Jarrett, David M. Lucas
    Abstract:

Principles of ethnographic research, Rural sociology, and interpersonal communication formed the basis of a collaborative study between Mexican and/or Hispanic and U.S. undergraduates. Students from both cultures learned to apply principles of qualitative research under the direction of faculty from the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey and Ohio University. Rapid Rural Appraisal, a methodology appropriate for multidisciplinary research, was used to assess the attitudes of a Rural population relative to socioeconomic and political issues. Undergraduates learned principles of field research within the context of a practical and informative pedagogical exercise.

  • Rapid Rural Appraisal: A Study of Gullah Culture.
    2002
    Co-Authors: Charles W. Jarrett, David M. Lucas
    Abstract:

Principles of Rural sociology and interpersonal communication provide the foundation for a study of "Gullah" culture. The Gullahs are a group of African Americans living along the southwestern U.S. coastal territory. Gullah culture began to evolve with the enslavement of African people in the Sea Islands off the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia, and northern Florida. Unlike enslaved Africans on the mainland, the more isolated Gullahs were able to transform their language and cultural traditions into a unique African American heritage. With the construction of bridges from mainland areas to the islands, scholars developed a perceived fear that Gullah language and culture might begin to disappear, with younger generations of Gullahs losing their cultural identity. Rapid Rural Appraisal, an effective method of assessing the needs of Rural populations, was applied to examine the current priorities of Gullah people with respect to preservation of their language and culture. This provided researchers with a systematic structure for interviewing Gullah people and recording structured observations in the field. Qualitative data were collected during a 35-day field experience in the Sea Islands of South Carolina. Results show the resilience of the Gullah people and culture, based on a deep, abiding faith in God, (Contains 55 references.) • Rapid Rural Appraisal: A Case Study in Rural Mexico.
    2001
    Co-Authors: David M. Lucas, Charles W. Jarrett
    Abstract:

The North American Free Trade. Agreement has generated serious debate regarding the stimulating effects of foreign investment on Mexico's economy. Saltillo, a metropolitan center in the mountains of Coahuila, has been positively affected by recent economic trends. But the village of General Cepeda, located just 50 miles from Saltillo, is relatively unaffected by recent economic improvements in the region. Mexican and American undergraduate students from the Saltillo campus of the Institute of Technology of Monterrey and Ohio University, representing a wide variety of majors, cooperated in a qualitative study to assess the attitudes of Rural residents regarding social, political, and economic issues. The Rapid Rural Appraisal method was used because it features a commitment to multidisciplinary research, team training, and qualitative data, and has an international reputation for rigorous and systematic principles of data collection. During the 12-day study, every head of household in the 175 family village was interviewed, and focus groups were conducted with village women, key informants, and village youth. Structured observations supplemented data collection. Findings revealed local residents were concerned with a lack of educational opportunities for youth, extreme poverty, high unemployment, and increasing alcoholism. Residents expressed a high degree of fear and suspicion of governmental institutions at the local, state, and federal levels. • Rapid Rural Appraisal of a Rural Village in Sabah
International journal of public health research, 2013
    Co-Authors: Philip Chua Yi Shean
    Abstract:

Introduction Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) is a systematic, semi-structured activity carried out in the field by a multidisciplinary team that is designed to obtain new information and hypotheses about Rural life. This article reports the results of an RRA conducted in Kampung Paris 1 (KGP1), Kinabatangan, Sabah under the Annual Health Promotion Program of the School of Medicine, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Methods A systematic random sampling was used to recruit the villagers and data was obtained through compilation of pre-existing data, field observation, structured interviews with key informants and villagers. Results Cardiorespiratory diseases were prevalent in KGP1. Common water sources such as rain water collected in dug wells in KGP1 were unhygienic. Dangerous toxic fumes were produced by the burning of municipal wastes nearby village houses. The villagers of KGP1 were exposed to various farm animals, which may harbor zoonoses. Health care services are limited in KGP1. Villagers who were not poor (>RM897) represented 48% of the population, followed by the poor (RM503-897), 20% and the hardcore poor ( 1.00 person per bedroom. Conclusions Poor water hygiene, polluted air from open burning, exposure to farm animals, poverty, poor education, overcrowding and inadequate health care services were among the few possible factors affecting the health of villagers in KGP1. Formal rigorous research should be conducted in the future to facilitate specific health interventions in areas of need such as KGP1.
