  • crime and punishment adam smith s theory of sentimental law and economics
    2020
    Co-Authors: Maria Pia Paganelli
    Abstract:

For Adam Smith a crime is not the result of a Rational Calculation of loss and gain, but the consequence of envy and a vain desire to parade wealth to attract the approbation of others, combined with a natural systematic bias in overestimating the probability of success. Similarly, Smith does not conceive of legal sanctions as a Rational deterrent, but as deriving from the feeling of resentment. While the prevailing approach of the eighteenth century is a Rational explanation of crime and a utilitarian use of punishment, Adam Smith instead builds his theory of criminal behavior and legal prosecution consistently on the sentiments. A well-functioning legal system is thus an unintended consequence of our desire to bring justice to the individual person, not the result of a Rational Calculation to promote the public good, just like a well-functioning economic system is the unintended consequence of our desire to better our own condition, not the result of a Rational Calculation to promote public good.

  • the effects of perceived relevance of travel blogs content on the behavioral intention to visit a tourist destination
    Computers in Human Behavior, 2014
Co-Authors: Yuchen Chen, Rongan Shang, Mingjin Li
    Abstract:

The tourism industry is characterized by ever-increasing competition, causing destinations to seek new methods to attract tourists. Traditionally, a decision to visit a destination is interpreted, in part, as a Rational Calculation of the costs/benefits of a set of alternative destinations, which were derived from external information sources, including e-WOM (word-of-mouth) or travelers' blogs. There are numerous travel blogs available for people to share and learn about travel experiences. Evidence shows, however, that not every blog exerts the same degree of influence on tourists. Therefore, which characteristics of these travel blogs attract tourists' attention and influence their decisions, becomes an interesting research question. Based on the concept of information relevance, a model is proposed for interrelating various attributes specific to blog's content and perceived enjoyment, an intrinsic motivation of information systems usage, to mitigate the above-mentioned gap. Results show that novelty, understandability, and interest of blogs' content affect behavioral intention through blog usage enjoyment. Finally, theoretical and practical implications are proposed.

  • The history of measurement and the engineers of space
The British Journal for the History of Science, 1993
    Co-Authors: Andrew Barry
    Abstract:

For the social theorists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, measurement, quantification and Calculation were of particular social and political significance. Karl Marx, in Capital, based his critique of classical political economy on an analysis of the quantification of labour as a commodity. Max Weber, in Economy and Society, emphasized the importance of Rational Calculation in the conduct of modern bureaucratic organizations. And in his major work, The Philosophy of Money, Georg Simmel highlighted what he called ‘the calculating character of modern times'.

  • Conventions: An Interpretation of Deep Structure in Organizations
    Organization Science, 2000
    Co-Authors: Pierre-yves Gomez, Brittany C. Jones
    Abstract:

To describe human action as purely the product of Rational Calculation leaves unanswered the question of how human beings can act in the absence of any structure for calculating the likely outcome of their actions. If the answer is that they cannot, how can any such structure be stable and comprehensive enough to enable action without becoming either inert or deterministic? In this paper, we seek to understand how free will and social context can interact to produce both structure and action. This is accomplished through the development of a framework based on the notion ofconvention. Organizations, in this view, are grounded in "effort conventions" of what constitutes "normal" effort at work, that structure the action of those who work within the organization, and in turn reinforce these structures. We show how humans can calculate within a context of socially constructed beliefs, and how these beliefs can evolve, provided that they remain essentially nonjustified and beyond the reach of Rational Calculation. It is this mix of Rational Calculation and nonRational beliefs that form the core of our model. We begin by defining the nature of a convention and its properties. We then describe the evolutionary dynamics of conventions, and show that conventions exist in competition with other conventions and evolve over time. Our model of convention is then linked to other notions, advanced in the managerial literature, which point to a kind of 'deep structure' that lies at the heart of organizations. We conclude by outlining how this notion can shed new light on the analysis of organizations.
