Twenty seven F1 Nellore and Red Angus crossbRed calves (9 steers, 9 bulls, and 9 heifers), averaging 274 kg BW, were used. At the beginning of the trial, three animals from each gender were slaughteRed to determine the initial body composition. The remaining 18 animals (3 animals of each gender) were randomly assigned to two treatments: fed 0.75 or 1.5% of BW of concentrate. The diets were based on corn silage and were isonitrogenous (2% N, DM). After three growing periods of 28 d, all animals were slaughteRed. The cleaned gastrointestinal tract, organs, carcass, head, hide, tail, feet, and tissues were weighed to determine the empty BW (EBW). These parts were ground separately and subsampled for chemical analyses. The log of the contents of each mineral in the empty body was regressed on the log of the EBW to estimate the net requirement for each mineral per kg of empty body gain (EBG). There were no differences ( P > 0.05) in the net requirements for growth of all macrominerals among genders. The equations of the pooled data of the net requirements for growth (g/kg EBG) were: 332.6 × EBW − 0.6367 for Ca, 112.1 × EBW − 0.5615 for P, 10.85 × EBW − 0.3992 for Na, 4.01 × EBW − 0.153 for K, and 3.589 × EBW − 0.462 for Mg. Our findings indicated that retained Ca and retained P were poorly related to the retained protein.

Three cattle from each group (i.e., steers, bulls, and heifers) were slaughteRed at the beginning of the trial to determine the initial body composition. The remaining calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: maintenance (diet containing 70% of DM as corn silage fed at 1.2% of BW daily) or concentrate at 0.75 or 1.5% of BW daily with corn silage available for ad libitum consumption. The diets were isonitrogenous (2% N, DM basis). The experimental design provided ranges in ME intake, BW, and ADG for the development of regression equations to pRedict the maintenance requirements for NE and net protein (MRNE and MRNP, respectively) and the growth requirement for NE and net protein (GRNE and GRNP, respectively). After 84 d of growth, the cattle were slaughteRed. The cleaned gastrointestinal tracts, organs, carcasses, heads, hides, tails, feet, blood, and tissues were weighed to measure empty BW (EBW). These parts were ground separately and subsampled for chemical analyses. For each animal within a period, DMI was measuRed daily and samples of feces were collected to determine diet digestibility. There were no differences in MRNE (P = 0.06) among groups. The combined data indicated a MRNE of 71.2 kcal.kg -0.75 of EBW.d -1 , with a partial efficiency of use of ME to NE m of 0.71. The partial efficiency of use of ME to NE for growth was 0.54 for bulls, 0.47 for steers, and 0.54 for heifers. The GRNE for steers and heifers were similar (P = 0.15) but were 18.7% greater (P = 0.03) for steers and heifers than for bulls. The MRNP did not differ among groups and averaged 2.53 g of CP.kg -0.5 of EBW.d -1 . Likewise, GRNP was not different among groups. The percentage of retained energy deposited as protein (RE p ) increased as the content of retained energy in the gain (RE c , Mcal/kg of empty body gain) decreased. The RE p equation of the pooled data was 46.5 × e -0.2463 RE c. We conclude that the energy requirement of crossbRed Bos indicus x Bos taurus for maintenance might be less than that of purebRed Bos taurus and that RE P is nonlinearly, negatively correlated with RE c . The GRNE was less for bulls than for steers and heifers. However, we found no differences in MRNE, MRNP, and GRNP for bulls, steers, and heifers of Nellore x Red Angus crossbReds.

Degradação in situ da matéria seca e da fração fibrosa do capim marandu obtido por diferentes métodos de amostragem, no período seco do ano

O experimento foi instalado em delineamento de blocos casualizados com parcela subdividida, com tres repeticoes, representadas pelos piquetes amostrados. Nas parcelas, foram avaliados cinco metodos de amostragens de forragem (metodo do quadrado metalico; metodo de avaliacao atraves de extrusa de bovino da raca Nelore; metodo de avaliacao por meio de extrusa de bovino Cruzado (Red Angus x Nelore); metodo de avaliacao por meio do pastejo, simulando bovino da raca Nelore; metodo de avaliacao por meio do pastejo, simulando bovino Cruzado (Red Angus x Nelore) e as subparcelas foram constituidas pelos anos de amostragem, 2003 e 2005. Foram determinadas as fracoes da cinetica ruminal: soluvel "A"; insoluvel potencialmente degradavel "B"; taxa de degradacao "Kd"; degradacao potencial (DP) e fracao nao degradavel "C" da MS e degradacao potencial (DP), fracao nao degradavel "C" e taxa de degradacao "Kd" da FDN e da FDA. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, observou-se que o metodo do quadrado metalico subestimou as caracteristicas da degradacao do capim. Os metodos do pastejo simulado se assemelharam muito ao das extrusas, no entanto, a pratica do simulador e que assegurou a amostragem eficiente, conforme foi constatado pelos dados obtidos no ano de 2003 e 2005.

The data were analyzed according to a randomized block design with three replications (paddock), in a split plot scheme. Five sampling methods were evaluated on the parcels: metallic square method; Nellore steers extrusa, Red Angus x Nellore crossbreeding steers extrusa, simulated grazing of the Nellore, simulated grazing of Red Angus x Nellore crossbreeding, and two years (2003 and 2005) on the subparcels. The following rumen kinetic fractions were determined: soluble “A”, degradable potential “B”, degradability rate “Kd”, the potential degradability (DP) and no degradable fraction “C” of the FDN, and FDA. According to the results obtained, the metallic square method underestimated the characteristics of the forage degradation. The results of the simulated grazing method resembled the extrusas method; however, it was the simulator practice that assuRed efficient sampling, as shown by evidence from data obtained between 2003 and 2005.

Fourty animals were used, with average age of 22 months, from four genetic groups: NGR (¼ Nelore vs. ¼ Guzera vs. ½ Red Angus); NSM (¼ Nelore vs. ¼ Simental vs. ½ Marchigiana); NRL (¼ Nelore vs. ¼ Red Angus vs. ½ Limousin) and NMM (¼ Nelore vs. ¾ Marchigiana). After slaughter and chilled of carcass, Longissimus muscle samples between 12th and 13th rib were collected. The fatty acid composition was evaluated using the gas chromatograph. There was no genetic group effect (P>0.05) on muscle moisture (74.0%), ash (1.0%), crude protein (19.0%) and total lipids (2.0%). The group NMM presented the lowest (P 0.05) between the genetic groups. The AGS/AGI reason (0.2) was similar. The NMM and NGR groups presented, respectively, the highest (8.5%) and the lowest (5.6%) proportion of n-6 fatty acids and the highest (5.5) and the lowest (4.0) n-6/n-3 ratio.

Twenty-four crossbRed heifers were used (½ Nellore x ½ Red Angus), they were approximately 18 months old and 225 kg of average body weight. All animals were fed with corn silage, citrus pulp and soybean meal during 84 days. 250 mg of rBST were administeRed subcutaneously, by intradermic way in the ischiorectal fossa. Treatments were: 1) control (administration of two mL of saline solution); 2) Single dose and 3) one dose each 14 days. The animals were used in a completely randomized design, with three treatments and eight replicates. The blood collect was realized in the beginning of the experiment and in the days 28, 56 and 84 of the experiment to determine the hematological aspects and metabolites. There was no influence of the rBST treatment on hematological aspects in the beginning and at the end of the experiment. However, the collect day had a positive linear effect on the hematocrit levels, negative linear on the glucose and triglycerides levels and positive quadratic on the IGF-I and urea levels. Also, the collect day effect was not observed on the insulin and total cholesterol levels.
