Unfortunately, most Reengineering projects are only concerned about whether the systems can be seamlessly integrated into the environments and usually ignore the quality in the improvement of the legacy systems. We all agree that it would be better to observe both integration and quality improvement implemented in the Reengineering Process. Software stability makes this possible in the Reengineering Process so that the new systems can run in a heterogeneous computing environment but also be stable enough to reduce the maintenance costs and efforts. In this paper, a connection between the stability modeling and Reengineering Process for legacy system is described. A preliminary study on techniques for building a better stable system will be presented although the techniques are still not very promising yet. We will also discuss the issues and challenges of applying software stability into the legacy Reengineering Process.

ICSM - Leveraging software Reengineering systems for heterogeneous distributed computing environments

These software Reengineering tools were originally developed for centralized environments. With the widespread use of object oriented and client server technologies, customers are expecting ESW to take advantage of these new technologies and also cooperate with their heterogeneous distributed computing environments. The article proposes a distributed object computing architecture for allowing ESW to operate in a heterogeneous distributed environment. The architecture was implemented with CORBA technology. The leverage of this new architecture enhances the product value and adapts the product to customer expectations.

SMC - Parallel iterative Reengineering model of legacy systems

Unfortunately, taking into account the large scale of these systems, the duration of Reengineering Process can still be quite long which will make an impact on the business the systems supported. In this paper we propose a parallel iterative Reengineering model to reduce the Reengineering Process duration. The model uses the method of Formal Concept Analysis to Process the complex access relationship between legacy components and shared data. An algorithm named “Bottom-Up”, which consists of two parts, is introduced to build the parallel schedule for the Reengineering Process. This model shortens the Reengineering duration and has been proven to be successful in improving the transition system's performance in a comparative experiment.

SMC - Improved Iterative Object-Oriented Reengineering Process based on Dynamic Coupling Measures

The iterative Reengineering Process provide a gradually approach to replace the legacy system and satisfy the quality and functionally requirements. Meanwhile, based on the observed relationships between software coupling and external quality factors of OO system, a sophisticated and operable coupling measures framework is stated. This paper proposes an improved iterative reengineer Process for achieving a low-coupling and high-maintainable OO system using dynamic software coupling measures. As an enhancement, a formal dynamic coupling evaluation Process is discussed detailedly. Moreover, two possible methods are given for conducting software engineers to optimize reengineered system's external quality.

Using Formal Concept Analysis for Scheduling Legacy System Iterative Reengineering Process

By replacing legacy components gradually, the functionalities and requirements of legacy system can be satisfied. In practice, scheduling legacy components and data in every iterative cycle correctly is a great challenge to project managers, because of the complexities of dependency relations between legacy components and data. Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), which has strong mathematical capability of Processing a group of elements with properties, is introduced to solve this issue. The major contribution of this paper is proposing an original Top-Down Schedule Algorithm (TDSA) based on FCA to compute an Iterative Cycle Reference Table (ICRT), which lists all potential cycles for an iterative Reengineering project. The computed iterative cycles can be performed in any order without stopping legacy system.

A Dual-Spiral Reengineering Model for Legacy System

CristoforoAbstract:Computer Technology has been in existence for many years; as time goes on there is an increasing number of outdated systems. Legacy system Reengineering has become a critical effort in many technology organizations. Several Reengineering models have been developed, such as the Byrne model and the evolutional model. These models have addressed some of the issues in the Reengineering Process, but other issues remain. This paper presents a dual-spiral Reengineering model, which performs as a cyclic approach, and addresses issues that those models do not, making the Reengineering Process more successful. This model has been successfully applied to a legacy financial software system Reengineering effort.

Iterative Reengineering of legacy systems

Marengo, Giuseppe VisaggioAbstract:During its life, a legacy system is subjected to many maintenance activities, which cause degradation of the quality of the system: When this degradation exceeds a critical threshold, the legacy system needs to be reengineered. In order to preserve the asset represented by the legacy system, the familiarity with it gained by the system's maintainers and users, and the continuity of execution of current operations during the Reengineering Process, the system needs to be reengineered gradually. Moreover, each program needs to be reengineered within a short period of time. The paper proposes a Reengineering Process model, which is applied to an in-use legacy system to confirm that the Process satisfies previous requirements and to measure its effectiveness. The reengineered system replaced the legacy one to the satisfaction of all the stakeholders; the Reengineering Process also had a satisfactory impact on the quality of the system. Finally, this paper contributes to validate the cause-effect relationship between the Reengineering Process and overcoming the aging symptoms of a software system.

ICWE - Re-engineering legacy web applications into rich internet applications

To face this migration, traditional Web methodologies are being extended with new RIA modeling primitives. However, this re-engineering Process is being figured out in an adhoc manner by introducing directly these new features in the models, crosscutting the old functionality and compromising the readability, reusability and maintainability of the whole system. With the aim of performing this Reengineering Process more systematic and less error prone we propose in this paper an approach based on separation of concerns applied to the specific case of WebML.
