    ABSTRACTA new Regional Geography of a revolution: Bosnia’s Plenum movement. Territory, Politics, Governance. This paper sheds a light on a recent reawakening of radical politics in the former Yugoslavia. It focuses on citizens living radical politics after socialism, as new groups and movements in the region struggle to embed radically democratic visions of society. Via an on-the-ground Regional study, it exposes the endless post-conflict, post-socialist transition era after Yugoslavia, which has for citizens meant general impoverishment, de-industrialization, mass unemployment and living under a post-democratic governance of divisive and corrupt elites. Out of this desert of post-socialism a form of horizontal democracy emerged called Plenum, the most radical experiment in non-institutional politics that can be found across the Balkans since the collapse of Yugoslavia.

    Abstract:

    In this introduction to the Special Issue ‘Practising a New Regional Geography in Northland’, we call for a new Regional Geography. We use the experience of a field course to reflect upon the opportunities and challenges associated with doing ‘Regional Geography’ in the regions, a subdiscipline that has in recent decades been pushed into the backwaters of the discipline. We reinterpret the maxim ‘Geography is what geographers do’ in a new way that emphasises pedagogy and research practice. The case of Northland and helping our students to learn experientially about community and environment under the rubric of sustainability allows us to argue the case for a reinterpretation of Regional Geography in these terms. We position the contributions in this Special Issue in terms of our call.

    Present content and system of Regional Geography do not correspond with its feature of synthetic, and neither adapt to the demand of quality education. To improve the students' ability of Regional analysis, the key points of the reform of Regional Geography teaching are put forward in this paper, which include to renew the content and system of teaching, to strengthen the teaching of methodology. Three principles of the reform are generalized and three parts of the content of Regional Geography are designed as a reference of the reform.

  • A Regional Geography of Recreation and Tourism in New Caledonia

    Abstract:

    This paper examines a Regional Geography of recreation and tourism in "New Caledonia." It begins with an introduction to definitional and conceptual issues, then presents data on tourism and recreation within the region and sets this information within a conceptual framework. Centred around Prince George, New Caledonia is at the geographic heart of British Columbia. Both tourism and recreation are firmly grounded in the region's natural landscape and in its community fabric. For tourism, the region is best understood as a series of nodes and pathways, where a significant economic opportunity exists for community nodes to capture more of the tourist traffic along these pathways. The spatial organization of recreation activi- ty is similar to that of other resource-based industries in the region, where small towns are the focal points for major infrastructure investments and there is extensive activity on Crown lands. Finally, cottage property development is common throughout the region and its benefits and impacts can be considered as significant.

  • Re-Situating Regional Geography in an Undergraduate Curriculum: An Example from a New University.

    Regional Geography courses have declined in status and number at many North American universities. Yet it is Regional courses which students with limited geographical education at the high school level may identify as typical Geography, and thus Regional courses may play a significant role in recruitment of Geography majors. Regional courses on the students' country or state/province offer an excellent opportunity to showcase how geographic perspectives can enrich our understanding of the familiar, both in terms of place and discipline. This paper discusses the pivotal role a Regional Geography course has been given in a new university's Geography curriculum, and the innovative structuring of the course so as to avoid some of the deficiencies of common instructional patterns which may deter some students from pursuing further geographic education.
