Reliability of the diagnosis of impairments in survey research in the field of chiropody.

A chiropodist treats foot and nail problems or postural deviations which may be corrected by means of remedial foot therapy. There is no history of scientific research on chiropody. A necessary first step is a survey on professional practice, diagnosis and treatment. A requirement for a survey study is a reliable Registration Form. In this study a Registration Form that draws on the conceptual framework of the ICIDH (International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps) was tested on inter-observer reliability. A chiropodist and a trainee examined 49 patients. Reliability was determined using two measures: the percentage of agreement and Cohen's Kappa. Findings of this study indicate that the reliability of the Registration Form for the assessment of the chiropody diagnosis is satisfactory.

PROSPERO at one year: an evaluation of its utility

After one year of operation we describe access and use, explore user experience and identify areas for future improvement. Methods We collated administrative data and web statistics and conducted an online survey of users’ experiences. Results On 21 February 2012, there were 1,076 registered users and 359 Registration records published on PROSPERO. The database usage statistics demonstrate the international interest in PROSPERO with high access around the clock and around the world. Based on 232 responses from PROSPERO users (response rate 22%), almost all respondents found joining and navigation was easy or very easy (99%); turn round time was good or excellent (96%); and supporting materials provided were helpful or very helpful (80%). The Registration fields were found by 80% to be relevant to their review; 99% rated their overall experience of registering with PROSPERO as good or excellent. Most respondents (81%) had a written protocol before completing the Registration Form and 19% did not. The majority, 136 (79%), indicated they completed the Registration Form in 60 minutes or less. Of those who expressed an opinion, 167 (87%) considered the time taken to be about right. Conclusions The first year of PROSPERO has shown that Registration of systematic review protocols is feasible and not overly burdensome for those registering their reviews. The evaluation has demonstrated that, on the whole, survey respondents are satisfied and the system allows Registration of protocol details in a straightforward and acceptable way. The findings have prompted some changes to improve user experience and identified some issues for future consideration.

Inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of the occupational therapy diagnosis.

Lankhorst, Jouke Van Der ZeeAbstract:A Registration Form based on the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps (ICIDH) was developed and its reliability as a Registration of occupational therapy (OT) diagnosis was assessed. Fifty patients from a psychiatric hospital and 57 patients from a rehabilitation center participated in this study. Reliability was determined using two measures: the percentage of agreement and Cohen's kappa. Findings of this study indicate that the reliability of the assessments of functional deficits of the patients by occupational therapists is satisfactory to very good. In the rehabilitation center all items, and in the psychiatric hospital 88% of the items, had a kappa value higher than .45. This implies that the Registration Form can be used in survey research.

The daily practice in home help services in the Netherlands: instrument development

Arts, Hans Kersten, Ada KerkstraAbstract:Many developments have taken place in home help services which have made further professionalization necessary. For this reason, a national study had been planned in the Netherlands to obtain a representative picture of the work of home helps and to examine overloading aspects of their workload. Five instruments were developed for this purpose and a pilot study was carried out to establish the reliabilitiy and content validity of the main instrument: a Registration Form to record the activities that home helps perForm. Twenty-five home helps articipated in the pilot study. An observer monitored them during their home visits for a period of 1 week. Both the observer and the home help recorded the activities that were carried out independently on the Registration Form. The reliability of the Registration Form was assessed by inter-rader-reliability. The validity of this instrument was estimated by the content validity. The results show that the Registration Form is, in general, a reliable instrument. There is a high level of agreement between home helps and observers in the four main categories: 94% for the household and the caring activities, 98% for the psycho-social or supporting activities and 96% for the reporting activities. The content validity of the Form is adequate and only a few items will be added to the final version of the Form. (aut.ref.)
