  • Mathematical Modeling of the Heat Energy Market on a Single Heat Supplier Basis

    Abstract:

    Organizational models of the heat energy market on a Single Heat Supplier basis (SHS) operating in free (liberalized) and Regulated Tariff environments are considered. An equilibrium mathematical model is proposed for the liberalized Tariff setting conditions based on a microeconomic monopolistic market model. This mathematical model allows for taking into account energy production and transportation costs as part of a single economic criterion and to determine the supply-and-demand equilibrium for heat energy. A Regulated heat energy market model on the SHS basis considers an option of a Tariff setting for consumers of the housing and utility sector at the level of average total costs and on the demand basis for industrial consumers. Hydraulic circuit theory models and methods, as well as basic microeconomic provisions, are adopted as a scientific and methodological basis describing the proposed mathematical models. To solve the energy supply and demand equilibrium problem, an algorithm is developed for both energy Tariff options based on univariate relaxation using redundant design schemes and simple iteration. The developed mathematical models fully reflect the current “rules of the game” between heat energy producers and consumers and allow a maximum consideration for the interests of all participants of the heat supply process under physical and engineering constraints on heat energy sources and heat networks. By means of the developed mathematical models, practical studies are carried out on the effect of the adopted heat energy price calculation method on both the market supply-and-demand equilibrium and on the main technical and economic characteristics of the real heat supply system of the city of Angarsk. Technical and economic assessments performed according to the indicated Tariffs make it possible to conclude that the lack of regulation will lead to an uncontrolled rise in prices for heat energy for consumers and gaining of abnormal profits by energy suppliers.

  • Profitability analysis of grid-connected photovoltaic facilities for household electricity self-sufficiency

    Spain exhibits a high level of energy dependence and has significant solar energy resources. These two facts have given rise to the prominence that renewable energy, particularly solar photovoltaic technology, has enjoyed in recent years, supported by a favorable regulatory framework. Currently, the Spanish Government is providing new ways in energy policy to enhance and accelerate the development of low-power photovoltaic generation facilities for self-consumption by introducing energy policies for feed-in payments of surplus electricity. Such facilities are an example of distributed electrical generation with important benefits for the environment and the rest of the electrical system because, when properly managed, they can help improve the system's stability and reduce overall losses. By analyzing household demand and solar photovoltaic energy resources, the profitability of such facilities is considered in this article, taking into account the technical and economic impact of storage systems and proposing models for feed-in payments of surplus electricity, in an attempt to assess whether this method of electricity generation versus the method of conventionally supplied power from a grid at a Regulated Tariff can rival each other economically, in terms of parity. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

  • Combined natural gas and electricity network pricing

    Abstract The introduction of competition to electricity generation and commercialization has been the main focus of many restructuring experiences around the world. The open access to the transmission network and a fair Regulated Tariff have been the keystones for the development of the electricity market. Parallel to the electricity industry, the natural gas business has great interaction with the electricity market in terms of fuel consumption and energy conversion. Given that the transmission and distribution monopolistic activities are very similar to the natural gas transportation through pipelines, economic regulation related to the natural gas network should be coherent with the transmission counterpart. This paper shows the application of the main wheeling charge methods, such as MW/gas-mile, invested related asset cost (IRAC) and Aumman-Shapley allocation, to both transmission and gas network. Stead-state equations are developed to adequate the various pricing methods. Some examples clarify the results, in terms of investments for thermal generation plants and end consumers, when combined pricing methods are used for transmission and gas networks. The paper also shows that the synergies between gas and electricity industry should be adequately considered, otherwise wrong economic signals are sent to the market players.
