  • How to Value and Monitor the Relational Capital of Knowledge-Intensive Organizations
Advances in Business Information Systems and Analytics, 2014
Co-Authors: Alexandre Barão, Alberto Rodrigues Da Silva
    Abstract:

Knowledge management systems are a way to help tracking and keeping organizational knowledge. Typically, organizations value is greater than their tangible assets value. Human, structural and Relational Capital is essential knowledge, but difficult to evaluate because it tends to be tacit, and spread in different organizational elements. The Relational Capital, as tacit knowledge, is not possible to capture its value as from accounting systems. There is a lack of models to evaluate the Relational Capital of organizations in a network perspective and our research question is: What is the value of this social network? SNARE (“Social Network Analysis and Reengineering Environment”) is a framework with engineering artifacts that can answer this question. With the aim of evaluating the Relational Capital of organizations, we developed three SNARE components : (1) SNARE-Language a descriptive UML-based method which provides a representation of an abstract social network structure, able to be extended and applied to organizations; (2) SNARE-RCO a model to determine the Relational Capital of organizations; and (3) SNARE-Explorer – based on SNARELanguage, it is a tool for social networks visualization, able to simulate or use real social network scenarios. It also uses SNARE-RCO model to compute the value of the organizational Relational Capital. The chapter presents an approach for the measurement of the value of organizations' networks.

  • a model to evaluate the Relational Capital of organizations snare rco
International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems, 2011
Co-Authors: Alexandre Barão, Alberto Rodrigues Da Silva
    Abstract:

We consider social networks as artifacts that are part of organizations. The Relational Capital value of a social network represents a contribution that should satisfy demands which are conducted by social entities. It is not always possible to capture this value in accounting systems of organizations because it is almost invisible in conventional forms of information systems. There are several evaluation models, but there is a lack of models for evaluation of Relational Capital that combine techniques derived from social network analysis of organizations. The SNARE, short for “Social Network Analysis and Reengineering Environment”, is a project that has been developed in recent years with engineering artifacts to represent social networks, and allows researchers to design and build real scenarios for social networks Relational knowledge discovery. We propose SNARE RCO as a model to evaluate the Relational Capital of organizations.

  • A Relational Capital perspective on social sustainability; the case of female entrepreneurship in Italy
    Measuring Business Excellence, 2019
    Co-Authors: Paola Paoloni
    Abstract:

Female entrepreneurship has been part of the political agenda internationally. Public entities should promote entrepreneurship in general, and female entrepreneurship in particular, with dedicated resources and programs. Female entrepreneurs are considered a key asset for developing economic growth. However, women experience much more difficulties than men in opening their own ventures. Relational Capital is particularly relevant when it comes to female entrepreneurship. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that affect the opening of new ventures and the role of Relational Capital in female entrepreneurship, taking into consideration the Italian context during the financial crisis.,This study uses a mixed-method approach analyzing data from a regional program to enhance the creation of new companies, trying to understand the issues of potential entrepreneurs in general and women in particular. A single case is then investigated using the characteristics – ambience – organization – sustainability model of micro-entrepreneurship and the network relationship model by Paoloni (2011).,The analysis highlights how women face much more difficulties in starting new ventures concerning their previous experience if their employment condition finds an extended period of inactivity. Additionally, potential female entrepreneurs are more sensitive to the complexity of the initiative, concerning the required investment and the number of employees, compared to male entrepreneurs. Relational Capital is a crucial asset in fostering the success of the venture, especially in the start-up phase.,The purpose of the study is to contribute to the debate regarding the issues affecting the opening of new companies, as well as the link between Relational Capital and female enterprises. The paper offers some insights about a program covering a well-sized population during the financial crisis.

  • Relational Capital and knowledge transfer in universities
    Business Process Management Journal, 2019
Co-Authors: Paola Paoloni, Francesca Maria Cesaroni, Paola Demartini
    Abstract:

Purpose The importance of Relational Capital for the university has grown enormously in recent years. In fact, Relational Capital allows universities to promote and emphasize the effectiveness of the third mission. The purpose of this paper is to propose a case study involving an Italian university that recently set up a new research observatory, and, thanks to its success, succeeded in enhancing its Relational Capital. Design/methodology/approach The authors adopted an action research approach to analyze the case study. Consistently, the authors followed the analysis, diagnosis, and intervention phases. First, the authors focused on the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the process through which the university created Relational Capital, and finally, the authors proposed solutions to improve the process. Findings This case study shows that the creation of relation Capital for the host university was the result of a process of transfer and transformation of the individual relationships of the observatory’s promoters. Originality/value This paper contributes to filling a significant gap in the literature on Relational Capital and universities and provides useful insights into how these organizations can encourage its creation. It also allows scholars, managers, and politicians involved in higher education to gain a greater understanding of this relevant topic.

  • Women Entrepreneurship in the Light of Relational Capital: General Insights
Gender Issues in Business and Economics, 2018
    Co-Authors: Paola Paoloni, Rosa Lombardi
    Abstract:

Starting from the assumption that women entrepreneurs are relevant developers of the corporate business in small and microenterprises, the main purpose of this chapter is to propose a literature analysis discovering how Relational Capital influences the first stage of women enterprises. Thus, a literature search on Scopus has been conducted to expand the international literature on the connection between gender studies and Relational Capital. In this way, evidence proposed are directed to better understand the debate on gender and Relational Capital.

  • Relational Capital in universities the ipazia observatory on gender issues
    2018
    Co-Authors: Paola Paoloni, Paola Demartini
    Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to carry out a literature review in order to know whether and to what extent the studies conducted so far have addressed Relational Capital in universities and, then, to provide a new framework for good practice that combines research, education, external universities (third mission) and internal relations. Our investigation aims to answer the following RQ: “How is Relational Capital formed in universities? How is it managed?” From a methodological point of view, we start with a literature review on Relational Capital and then we develop a case study. As far as the literature review is concerned, a search on Scopus was conducted, using a set of selected keywords, because it guarantees a high quality for publications. Selected papers have been analysed in an attempt to identify the main issues. The case study is a research strategy particularly suitable for an in-depth examination of current real-life events. The case chosen focuses on the foundation and development of the scientific observatory on gender issues entitled “Ipazia”. All relationships built in order to merge research, teaching and third mission within universities will be analysed and discussed. The analysed case study allows us to investigate whether and how the use of Relational Capital enables universities to combine research, education and third mission. Meanwhile, our research highlights how “Ipazia” can be seen as an activator of relationships for gender studies. Our research project aims to extend the analysis of Relational Capital in universities. This project could allow us to gain a greater understanding of a relevant subject, especially for those, scholars or politicians, who are involved in developing, managing and measuring Relational Capital in universities. Finally, this paper contributes to the expansion of the literature on gender studies, and for this reason, it offers a new perspective applied to a topic of high relevance such as Relational Capital in universities.

  • exploring the connection between Relational Capital and female entrepreneurs
African Journal of Business Management, 2017
    Co-Authors: Paola Paoloni, Rosa Lombardi
    Abstract:

Among intangible assets of contemporary companies, Relational Capital (RC) is a relevant strategic asset as well as a dimension of intellectual Capital. In this scenario, micro-enterprises are key drivers of economic growth, and woman entrepreneurs are key developers of these businesses. So, the purpose of this study is to carry out a literature review analyzing how RC contributes to the startup phase of women-owned micro-enterprises. Another purpose is to understand whether and to what extent the studies conducted so far have addressed some issues such as “How and why women entrepreneurs use Relational Capital? What are the main benefits they get using Relational Capital? What are the main obstacles they face?” A literature search on Scopus was conducted, using a set of selected keywords. Scopus was used since it has quality publications. Selected papers were analyzed and classified, in an attempt to identify the main topics and results obtained from the research and analysis carried out so far. The contribution of the present research is to make the international literature focus on the connection between gender studies and RC. Particularly, the literature review emphasizes the topic proposed as emerging issue, which gives us the opportunity to identify new trends and future directions of research. This paper aims to advance knowledge and practice in the area of gender and management, using RC based on empirical research, theoretical developments, practice and current issues. The main evidences are related to a better understanding of the debate on gender and Relational Capital, considering that female entrepreneurship is central to the development and welfare of economies. Deep knowledge on how women entrepreneurs manage business relation can contribute to improving the effectiveness policies that promote the participation of female entrepreneurs in the economy. Key words: Relational Capital, women entrepreneur, women manager, women-owned micro-enterprise, gender studies.
