Leadership Orientation of Afghan and Japanese Respondents: A Study of “Guzaara†or Getting Along in Asia
Information Management and Business Review, 2019Co-Authors: Bahaudin G. MujtabaAbstract:The purpose of this paper is to analyze the leadership tendencies of Afghan and Japaneserespondents by exploring their task and Relationship Orientations. While there are many published studies onthe Japanese work culture and leadership practices, research about Afghan working adults is limited. Usingthe Style Questionnaire, this research collected and compared the leadership Orientations of 400 respondentsfrom each country based on national culture on the task and Relationship-Orientation continuums. To deepenthe understanding of Afghan leadership tendencies, we explore their culture of “guzaara†(getting along)practices. Similarly, we discuss the Japanese concept of “ba†(interactive knowledge creation) as one exampleof a best practice that can be benchmarked by others in society. Both Afghanistan and Japan are high-contextcultures; therefore, people are expected to be more Relationship-oriented. While respondents from bothcountries do have a stronger focus on their Relationships, data shows that Afghans have a significantly higherscore on both the task-Orientation as well as Relationship-Orientation continuums, compared to their Japanesecounterparts. Implications, recommendations and limitations of the study are provided. The findings thatJapanese and Afghan employees are indeed focused on their Relationships, and that they have a moderatelyhigh task Orientation scores, are useful for managers and expatriates working in these two Asian countries.

Stress, task, and Relationship Orientations of Taiwanese adults: an examination of gender in this high-context culture
2016Co-Authors: Kuo-ying Huang, Bahaudin G. MujtabaAbstract:Men and women are different and are likely to have different Orientations toward stress, tasks, and Relationships. To explore the stress, task, and Relationship Orientation of people in the high-context culture of Taiwan, this paper focused on the differences of 249 adult Taiwanese. It appears that they have similar scores on the Relationship and task Orientations. However, males seem to be more task-oriented than female Taiwanese. Overall, the Taiwanese reported a moderate level of stress and they have an equal focus on their tasks and Relationships. In this paper, literature on high and low context cultures is presented along with practical application, suggestions and implications for future studies.

Task and Relationship Orientation of Pakistani Managers and Working Professionals: The Interaction Effect of Demographics in a Collective Culture
Public Organization Review, 2016Co-Authors: Razia Begum, Bahaudin G. MujtabaAbstract:This study focused on identifying the task and Relationship Orientations of respondents working in various Pakistani organizations. To explore their Orientations, respondents in Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KPK) and Punjab provinces of Pakistan were surveyed. The data were analyzed by Univariate General Linear Model considering age, qualification and managerial experience as independent variables. Pakistani managers seem to use both styles in moderation. While they are more Relationships focused, they demonstrate an overall balance between the two styles. In the task Orientation, no individual factor showed any significant main effect. But the interaction of age by academics, and academics by management experience has a significant effect on task Orientation. In the case of Relationship Orientation, academics seem to be a statistically significant factor and the interaction of age by academics has a significant effect as well. After the multiple comparisons of sub-classes of independent variables by Tukey Post Hoc test, the common trend of both styles found is that getting advancement in all three independent variables has a significant effect on both Orientations.

Task and Relationship Orientation of Chinese students and managers in the automotive industry
Journal of Technology Management in China, 2013Co-Authors: Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Hongmin Cai, Yunshan Lian, Han PingAbstract:Purpose – The purpose of this research is to study the management approach of automotive industry managers and students in China. Design/methodology/approach – This paper focused on comparing the leadership Orientation of respondents and compared 200 working managers with 181 graduate students in the automotive industry. Findings – It appears that these Chinese respondents from the automotive industry have significantly higher scores on the Relationship Orientation than task Orientation. Managers have significantly higher scores on both dimensions of leadership. Similarly, the female respondents in China had similar scores as their male colleagues. Research limitations/implications – It appears that being socialized in a collectivistic or high context culture can lead to higher focus on Relationship Orientation. Based on the results, practical implications and application for future research are explored. Originality/value – This paper is original and analyzes the leadership Orientation of respondents.

are you feeling lonely the impact of Relationship characteristics and online social network features on loneliness
Journal of Management Information Systems, 2015Co-Authors: Sabine Matook, Jeffrey Cummings, Hillol BalaAbstract:AbstractIn contemporary society, many people move away from their personal networks for extended periods to reach professional and/or educational goals. This separation can often lead to feelings of loneliness, which can be stressful and sometimes debilitating for the individual. We seek to understand how a person’s use of online social networks (OSNs)—technology-enabled tools that assist users with creating and maintaining their Relationships—might affect their perceptions of loneliness. Prior research has offered mixed results about how OSNs affect loneliness—reporting both positive and negative effects. We argue in this study that a clearer perspective can be gained by taking a closer look at how individuals approach their Relationship management in OSNs. Building on theoretical works on loneliness, we develop a model to explain the effects of Relationship characteristics (i.e., Relationship Orientation, self-disclosure, and networking ability) and OSN features (i.e., active or passive) on perceived lo...

Achieving Relationship marketing effectiveness in business-to-business exchanges
Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, 2008Co-Authors: Robert W. Palmatier, Lisa K. Scheer, Kenneth R. Evans, Todd J. ArnoldAbstract:Relationship marketing research and practice operate according to the paradigm that firms should invest in Relationship marketing to build better Relationships, which will generate improved financial performance. However, findings that Relationship marketing efforts vary in their effectiveness across customers and may even be detrimental to performance challenge this belief. This article, therefore, offers a theoretical model that addresses three key issues: 1) what factors determine a customer’s need for relational governance (Relationship Orientation); 2) what mediating mechanism captures the negative effects of Relationship marketing on performance (exchange inefficiency); and 3) how does a customer’s Relationship Orientation determine the effectiveness of Relationship marketing, thus allowing for effective segmentation. The authors demonstrate in an empirical study that the trust in the salesperson and exchange inefficiency both mediate the effect of Relationship marketing on seller financial outcomes. In addition, customers’ Relationship Orientation moderates the impact of Relationship marketing on both trust and exchange inefficiency.

Enhancing innovation capability through Relationship management and implications for performance
European Journal of Innovation Management, 2006Co-Authors: Photis M. PanayidesAbstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine empirically the antecedents and consequences of innovativeness or innovation capability of logistics service providers (LSPs). In particular Relationship Orientation is examined as an antecedent to innovativeness that will in turn lead to higher levels of logistics service quality and firm performance. The outcomes aim at contributing towards understanding the main drivers of innovativeness and the outcomes of developing the capability to innovate.Design/methodology/approach – Data to empirically analyze the four research hypotheses on the Relationships between Relationship Orientation, innovativeness, logistics service quality and firm performance are collected via a survey of a random sample of LSPs in Hong Kong and analyzed using structural equation modelling via LISREL 8.52. The LISREL diagnostics indicated good fit of the measurement and structural models, providing supporting evidence to the hypothesized causal Relationships.Findings – The empirical ...

The Impact of Integrated Logistics Relationships on Third-Party Logistics Service Quality and Performance
Maritime Economics & Logistics, 2005Co-Authors: Photis M. PanayidesAbstract:Third-party logistics has been an efficient organisational adjustment to the needs of clients for logistics solutions and improvement in supply chain performance. Examination of logistics performance has mainly been focused on operational measures. There has been less attention placed on the influence of organisational factors, despite the advocated need for greater inter-organisational integration among supply chain partners. This study examines empirically the influence of Relationship Orientation in third-party logistics and its impact on logistics service quality and performance. Data were collected via a large-scale industrial survey and structural equation modelling was used to examine the causal hypotheses. The findings suggest that relational exchange can have a positive effect on logistics service quality and performance in third-party logistics. Research and managerial implications are discussed.
