A fuzzy distinction: Anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism
Journal of Ethnographic Theory - HAU, 2014Co-Authors: Jeanne Favret-saadaAbstract:Scholarly contributions on the responsibility of the churches for the extermination of the Jews during the Second World War contrast Nazi "anti-Semitism" (the aversion toward the Jews as a racial group) with Christian "anti-Judaism" (the Christian aversion toward the Jewish religion), as one would oppose the new to the old, the modern to the traditional, the political to the Religious, Science to theology. The author shows, using four examples (Léon Poliakov, Hannah Arendt, Colette Guillaumin, Thomas Nipperdey & Reinhard Rürup), that this distinction induces one to ignore the churches' actions in the process that led from the invention of the word anti-Semite in 1879 to the destruction of the Jews by the Nazis.

Therefore, the subject of the academic Religious studies in its broadest aspect, besides the nature of religion, are also her functionality in a large confessional variety. Academicity Religious studies are not hostility towards religion, not atheism, as some seek it so interpreted. A feature of academic Religious studies is observance of ideological neutrality with respect to religion, certain the equilibrium of confessions, tolerance to each of them, what not in the theological, denominational-interlocutory, and therefore unscientific Religious studies, and there is no so-called scientific atheism.

Afterword. Topical problems of Religious Science
Ukrainian Religious Studies, 2006Co-Authors: Anatolii M. KolodnyiAbstract:Religious Studies is relatively young and at the same time one of the oldest branches of humanitarian knowledge. Ancient because knowledge of religion we find in the works of authors of countries of the ancient world. Young because its components as a Science began to be constituted in the system of knowledge only in the eighteenth-nineteenth centuries. To define yourself in your subject of Religious studies was much more difficult than other humanities. The complexity of this definition is due primarily to epistemological factors. The point is that you cannot describe the phenomenon of religion with the help of familiar concepts and categories. The peculiarity of religion is that it does not reflect any external to man natural and social forces, but his personal state, which can be called a state of self-determination in the world, the acquisition of the human self.

Beginning of Academic Religious Studies in Ukraine
Ukrainian Religious Studies, 1997Co-Authors: Anatolii M. KolodnyiAbstract:The first organizational form of the existence of Religious Science in Ukraine was the 1931 Anti-Religious Sector, which was formed in Kharkov as a part of the Institute of Philosophy and Natural Sciences of the All-Ukrainian Association of Scientific Research Institutes. His work was led by well-known sociologist D. Ignatyuk. In the sector worked I. Elvin, M. Krivohatsky, P. Chernitsov, O. Chefranov. The scientific production of the sector was published in magazines and published in separate brochures. Since 1937, after the abolition of Wandy and the transfer of its institutes to the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in this area, scientists of the philosophical commission of the socio-economic department of the ANU worked. We note the fact that at that time the development of knowledge about religion in the academic system was completely subordinated to the task of disseminating anti-Religious knowledge and substantiating the ideologized "opium" assessments of religion.

KolodnyiAbstract:VII International Round Table, held on May 12-14, 2007 on the basis of the Lviv Mykes), the clori rions of religions, like the previous ones, considered a broad aspect of the problems of Religious Science. Many scientists from Ukraine, near foreign countries came to Lviv. What prevailed in the thematic orientation of scientific reports and messages? First of all, this is an understanding of the creative work of not only well-known Ukrainian thinkers and theologians (G. Skovoroda, A. Sheptytsky, I. Ogienko, I.Potiy, etc.), but also new figures - A. Monastyrsky, S.Tomasashkovsky, Yu.Levinsky , K.Sokolovsky, T.Mostovoi, J.Zastirts and others. Again the attention of researchers was drawn to the history of Greek Catholicism, the Orthodox - autocephalous movement.

When cognitive scientists become Religious, Science is in trouble: On neurotheology from a philosophy of Science perspective
Religion, 2009Co-Authors: Armin W. GeertzAbstract:Since the 1990s medical technology has afforded exciting possibilities for studying the brain. Together with knowledge accrued through psychology and psychiatry, it has set the stage for pioneering research and stimulated disciplines such as Social NeuroScience, the Cognitive Science of Religion, Cognitive Anthropology, and Cognitive Archaeology. Another discipline has arisen, Neurotheology, which is interested in the brain and Religious experience. Early proponents such as d'Aquili and Newberg had a Religious agenda in their work. Others, such as members of Transcendental Meditation, have used experimental and brain studies to legitimate Religious agendas. Experiential shamanists have embarked on a similar legitimation process. The differences between Science and therapy and spirituality have been blurred or denied. Neurotheological attempts to discover areas of the brain responsible for Religious experiences have led to untenable results. The fact that such research has passed the peer review process of leading psychological, psychiatric, and neurological journals is perhaps more indicative of the pervasiveness of religiosity throughout American society than of objective brain Science. This essay argues that neurotheology is an example of the struggle between confessional and critical approaches to the study of religion. The main difference is that the battlefield of this struggle is the brain.

A FORGOTTEN THEORETICAL CONNECTION OF AL-GHAZĀLĪ’S CLASSIFICATION OF Religious ScienceS: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS
Journal of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization, 2015Co-Authors: Tazul Islam, M. Y. ZulkifliAbstract:Each classification of Science propounded by al-Ghazālī is generally based on a specific theoretical background. For Religious Science, which is relatively more focused in his discussion, he ascribed the entire discourse to a theory called “lubāb al-Qur’an” (essence of the Qur’an). This particular theory was born in another concept he calls ‘maqāsid al-Qur’an’ (objectives of the Qur’an) which is increasingly fashionable in contemporary Islamic scholarship. Despite this attention from scholars, the concerned discussion in previous literatures seems more interested in outlining the branches Religious Science that are enumerated by Al-Ghazālī rather than in digging deep into the above-mentioned background theory. In this milieu, the existing gap of study provokes exploring this very theoretical basis and its implications. Hence, to explore various dimensions of this gap and to shed light on it, this research aims at exploring critically the conceptual background of al-Ghazālī’s classification of Religious Sciences. It is hoped that this study may lay a new direction for this emerging debate.
