    Abstract:

    In recent years, a large number of businesses and universities have installed local area networks (LAN) based on the Windows NT domain model as their primary computing environment. The system administrators of these new computing environments are finding that the simple Remote Administration capabilities available in UNIX based LAN are not available. The Windows NT operating system, out of the box, does not provide a simple solution to perform Remote Administration. The Remote Administration can be achieved, if an administrator has the expertise in writing Windows scripts using the Windows Resource Kit or writing commands in the Perl language. The majority of current system administrators do not have time to acquire such knowledge. In this paper, we present the preliminary work done in developing a distributed Remote LAN Administration Tool for Windows NT and 2000 based LAN developed for the system administrators at the University of Wyoming. The distributed Remote Administration Tool is being developed with an object-oriented architecture and a graphical user interface.

    One of the trends we have been observing for some time now is the blurring of divisional lines between different types of malware. Classifying a newly discovered 'creature' as a virus, a worm, a Trojan or a security exploit becomes more difficult and anti-virus researchers spend a significant amount of their time discussing the proper classification of new viruses and Trojans. Depending on the point of view, very often, the same program may be perceived as a Remote Administration Tool (RAT) allowing a potentially malicious user to Remotely control the system. A Remote Administration Tool is a Remote control software that when installed on a computer it allows a Remote computer to take control of it. With Remote control software you can work on a Remote computer exactly as if you were right there at its keyboard. With fast, reliable, easy-to-use pc from Remote control software, it lets you save hours of running up and down stairs between computers. Remote control software allows you to take control of another PC on a LAN, WAN or dial-up connection so you see the Remote computer's screen on your monitor and all your mouse movements and keystrokes are directly transferred to the Remote machine. Remote control software provides fast secure access to Remote PC’s on Windows platforms. Hackers and malware sometimes install these types of software on a computer in order to take control of them Remotely.     Abstract:

    Remote Administration Tools are programs used to Remotely gain control of the computer that it is attacking and giving the attacker unhindered access to the system resources and thereby compromising the privacy of the victim. These RATs can be injected in a computer via E-mail, application, games, links, updates etc. A backdoor can be created from which payload is inserted into the target computer. Once installed these RATs can give the root access of the computer. RAT hides the process running in the background to cover the tracks so that the anti-virus installed in the system cannot detect it. Through RATs the host can control the webcam, keyboard, and the running processes and can install any malicious software in the system.
