  • Dietary Tryptophan Induces Opposite Health-Related Responses in the Senegalese Sole (Solea senegalensis) Reared at Low or High Stocking Densities With Implications in Disease Resistance

    Abstract:

    High rearing densities are typical conditions of both inland and onshore intensive aquaculture units. Despite obvious drawbacks, this strategy is nonetheless used to increase production profits. Such conditions inflict stress on fish, reducing their ability to cope with disease, bringing producers to adopt therapeutic strategies. In an attempt to overcome deleterious effects of chronic stress, Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, held at low (LD) or high density (HD) were fed tryptophan-supplemented diets with final tryptophan content at two (TRP2) or four times (TRP4) the Requirement Level, as well as a control and non-supplemented diet (CTRL) for 38 days. Fish were sampled at the end of the feeding trial for evaluation of their immune status, and mortalities were recorded following intra-peritoneal infection with Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida. Blood was collected for analysis of the hematological profile and innate immune parameters in plasma. Pituitary and hypothalamus were sampled for the assessment of neuro-endocrine-related gene expression. During the feeding trial, fish fed TRP4 and held at LD conditions presented higher mortalities, whereas fish kept at HD seemed to benefit from this dietary treatment, as disease resistance increased over that of CTRL-fed fish. In accordance, cortisol Level tended to be higher in fish fed both supplemented diets at LD compared to fish fed CTRL, but was lower in fish fed TRP4 than in those fed TRP2 under HD condition. Together with lower mRNA Levels of proopiomelanocortin observed with both supplementation Levels, these results suggest that higher Levels of tryptophan might counteract stress-induced cortisol production, thereby rendering fish better prepared to cope with disease. Data regarding sole immune status showed no clear effects of tryptophan on leucocyte numbers, but TRP4-fed fish displayed inhibited alternative complement activity (ACH50) when held at LD, as opposed to their HD counterparts whose ACH50 was higher than that of CTRL-fed fish. In conclusion, while dietary tryptophan supplementation might have harmful effects in control fish, it might prove to be a promising strategy to overcome chronic stress-induced disease susceptibility in farmed Senegalese sole

    Abstract:

    Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) aims at applying a pre-planned systematic reuse of large-grained software artifacts to increase the software productivity and reduce the development cost. The idea of SPLE is to analyze the business domain of a family of products to identify the common and the variable parts between the products. However, it is common for companies to develop, in an ad-hoc manner (e.g. clone and own), a set of products that share common services and differ in terms of others. Thus, many contributions are proposed to re-engineer existing product variants to a software product line. Nevertheless, these contributions are mostly focused on managing the variability at the Requirement Level. Few contributions address the variability at the architectural Level despite its major importance. Starting from this observation, we propose an approach to reverse engineer the architecture of a set of product variants. Our goal is to identify variability and dependencies among architectural-element variants. Our work relies on formal concept analysis to analyze the variability. To validate the proposed approach, we experimented on two families of open-source product variants; Mobile Media and Health Watcher. %The results show that our approach is able to identify the architectural variability and the dependencies.

    Abstract:

    This paper introduces a domain Spatio-Temporal Consistency (STeC) language for the application domain of space-air-ground integrated networks. The STeC language is taken as the foundation of modeling our systems, bacause it works well on specifying real-time systems concerning not only the time characteristic but also the location characteristic and the consistency between them. In this paper, a domain-STeC language is devised and applied to model satellite observation processes. We use two tools to check and verify this STeC model, the syntax and spatio-temporal consistency were checked in STeC tool, and after being transformed into timed automata model, some further verification can be finished in UPPAAL tool. It shows that the instantiated STeC approach is suitable for modeling and verifying space-air-ground integrated networks on the Requirement Level. This work helps to ensure the spatial-temporal consistency in that application domain, and increases the reliability and dependability of our system.

    Abstract During the sea water phase, Atlantic salmon is exposed to shifting environmental conditions affecting the physiology and metabolism of the fish. Strategic dietary supplements may enable the fish to sustain a higher growth rate during particular periods. In this experiment, a combination of two amino acids ( l -arginine and l -glutamate, with supplementation Levels 1.1% and 0.75%, respectively) was used as dietary supplements since earlier observations have indicated that these amino acids have versatile functions, influencing growth, reproduction and the immune response in animals. In the case of arginine, the control diet was set at assumed Requirement Level, while the test diet was supplemented further. The effects of this supplementation on feed intake and growth parameters were studied, as well as selected organ weight, biochemical, molecular and hormonal indicators. During the first experimental period (May–July), few significant effects were found. However, in the second period of the experiment (July–September), a higher specific feeding rate (SFR), thermal growth coefficient (TGC) and specific growth rate (SGR) ( p p l -arginine and l -glutamate significantly increased feeding rate and growth during the second feeding period in autumn. This response appeared to occur when the two conditions of rapidly decreasing day lengths and high feed intake, were met.

    Objective To investigate the information Requirement Level of thyroid cancer patients during the perioperative period, and to explore the relevant influencing factors. Methods A total of 94 thyroid cancer patients during perioperative period who were treated from June 2015 to June 2016 in our department were recruited in the study using convenience sampling. The patients were investigated using the general data and clinical data questionnaire, Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale (MUIS) and Information Preference Questionnaire for Cancer Patients. Results The total score of information Requirement in patients with thyroid cancer during perioperative period was (43.05±4.52) , which was at a high Level. Multiple regression analysis showed that the education Level, disease uncertainty and gender were the main influencing factors of information Requirement Level in the patients with thyroid cancer (P<0.05) . Conclusions The information Requirement Level in the patients with thyroid cancer during perioperative period was relatively high. Targeted information support should be given to the patients based on their different educational Levels, disease uncertainty Levels and genders in the clinic.
