However, most Websites are not Designed with the smart TV experience in mind, and usability problems arise when Websites are viewed and interacted with on a TV device. To solve this challenge, we propose the use of Responsive Web Design, a method that has become a standard in mobile devices, saving the need of developing custom TV-specific Websites or Apps. We tested the current usability of a typical “desktop” Website on the smart TV, and compared it to an alternative version of the same site but with our proposed Responsive techniques being applied. Results provided an indication of improved usability and likeability by using our “TV-Responsive” method compared to the nonResponsive one. However, while our TV-Responsive Website had a higher usability score, the differences were not statistically significant, with the exception of the usability on the ease of scrolling and most measured task completion times.

Although all modern Smart TVs feature a Web browser, its use is very limited, while user surveys reveal serious usability issues. One of the major problems with TV Web browsing is that there are very few TV-optimized Websites. Most of the Web content is Designed for Desktops, which causes a number of usability issues, making the experience very frustrating for the TV users. This situation looks very similar to the early days of Web on mobile phones. It took some years until a large number of Websites became mobile-friendly and now it has become a standard practice. Responsive Web Design helped this adaption, since it was no longer needed to Design a separate Website for each device, but a single one that adapted depending on the user's device. This technique has not yet been applied for TV Websites, and this is what this paper investigates. We explore the convergence of Responsive Web Design on Smart TVs and apply this technique on a typical News Website which is Responsive for Mobile, Tablet and Desktop by adding an additional layout adaption for TV. Consequently, this Website is tested on the three most popular TV platforms. Conclusively, we propose guidelines on how Responsive Web Design can be exploited for Smart TV Web browsing.

However, there are still many Websites whose display or the user interface is not very attractive to students because their construction has not been Designed properly and optimally. By using the Heuristic Of Responsive Web Design method as a benchmark to make this e-learning Website, hoped that the Website Design and purpose will be fulfilled the need and expectations of students who want to find lessons material and want to learn by online.

impact of accessibility and usability barriers on the emotions of blind users in Responsive Web Design
Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2019Co-Authors: Tiago Do Carmo Nogueira, Deller James Ferreira, Matheus Rudolfo Diedrich UllmannAbstract:With the emergence of new Web Design trends, as the Responsive Web Design, new problems concerning users experience emerges, such as the importance of investigating the impact of these new Web trends on blind user's experience. Thus, this work identifies and ranks the emotional impact and barriers faced by blind and sighted users experience when interacting with Responsive and non-Responsive Web Designs. Six Websites were selected, three Responsive and three non-Responsive. The users performed six tasks in each Website. To understand the emotional responses of blind and sighted users, we used the Affect Grid Method to classify user's emotions during interactions. We also applied statistical tests during data analysis. The results show that non-Responsive Websites presented a higher percentage of pleasant emotions and high excitement when compared to Responsive ones. We also found evidence that barriers faced by users during interactions that impacted on the emotions of users have been triggered by non-compliance to WCAG guidelines. The main impacts identified in this study were the barriers to accessibility, navigability and content faced by blind users caused by the lack of robust Web content.

systematic review of visually impaired and blind user experience of Web trends
Revista de Sistemas e Computação - RSC, 2019Co-Authors: Tiago Do Carmo Nogueira, Deller James FerreiraAbstract:For visually impaired people, interaction with the Web can be a challenging task; this is due to poor accessibility, usability, and User eXperience (UX) of Websites. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a thorough investigation on the UX of Websites, especially considering new trends on the Web. In this study, we identified, classified, and analyzed 34 906 scientific papers published in the last eight years to show the originality and relevance of investigating the UX of visually impaired and blind users. We considered new Web trends, focusing on Flat Design and Responsive Web Design. We performed a systematic review and selected 1 015 scientific papers that addressed the importance of UX or other issues relevant to UX. In this literature, we found only five articles addressing issues faced by blind or visually impaired users. None of the studies compared the experiences of users who are blind or visually impaired with those of sighted users. Considering the lack of scientific studies that address the impact of new Web trends on UX and studies that examine the importance of UX, we concluded that it is original and relevant to investigate the UX of visually impaired, blind, and sighted users on the Web. From our research, it was possible to identify recurrent subjects of research relevant to UX; among them were UX methods applied to mobile, Approach to Agile UX, Usability techniques UX, and Centered Design to User.

Comparing sighted and blind users task performance in Responsive and non-Responsive Web Design

GuntijoAbstract:This article highlights the necessity to go beyond accessibility guidelines in interactive Web Design, and more specifically in new Web trends, as well as the importance of investigations concerning universal Web Design usability for blind users. In this work, we compared the task performance of blind and sighted users in Responsive and non-Responsive Web Design. The results comparing task performance in Responsive and non-Responsive Web sites indicate that when Responsive Web Design involves deep structures with fewer choices and more levels, it might be considered a Design strategy that does not work well for both sighted and blind user populations, showing that a reasonable criterion that should be considered is to Design Web sites with good usability for blind as well as sighted users.

Evaluating Responsive Web Design's Impact on Blind Users

Carvalho, Luciana De Oliveira BerretaAbstract:Recent studies show that Websites complying with accessibility guidelines can still be ineffective, inefficient, and unpleasant. Compliance with accessibility guidelines does not guarantee blind users' satisfaction when accessing Websites. Meanwhile, in recent years, Websites have undergone radical changes regarding Design, development, and construction. Responsive Design is a new trend that has a strong impact on Web Design. To determine blind users' experience with Responsive Design, the authors performed empirical tests to investigate the impact of Responsive Design on the emotions of blind users during Web interactions. They measured user emotions by applying the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) instrument. Results show that although the Responsive Websites investigated had acceptable levels of accessibility, they posed numerous usability barriers and triggered intense, negative user emotions. Furthermore, the average number of negative emotional reactions for blind users was higher in the case of Responsive Web Design than in the case of nonResponsive Web Design.
